Amy’s mom passed away today after battling with lung cancer for quite some time.  I didn’t know her, but my heart goes out to Amy and her family. I need to call her tomorrow and express my condolences. We knew it was coming, but it’s still a shock.

Found Object – Newton and I surfing the web about 6 years ago. I think it was the African Peanut Soup recipe.

BHK and I had a lovely taco salad for supper… huge enough for tomorrow’s leftovers, methinks.

Shots, and off to southern states to grab a couple of pepper plants – saw an adorable pair of kids. Little girl in riding pants and very friendly, and her little brother who reminded me of JD at 6 years old. We also picked up some thistle seed for the finches (so Pye and Newt have a little outside wildlife to watch)

After that a lovely church wine and craft show… We got a Christmas ornament with a pair of origami cranes (cherry blossom pattern paper) inside of a rounded cube…. and a lovely packet of bake sale goodies. Aggression cookies (oatmeal), molasses and chocolate chip.

Episcopal church had the following on the bulletin board:

The comedian Robin Williams is an Episcopalian, and he has created a funny “Top Ten” List of reasons to be an Episcopalian.

10. No snake handling.

9. You can believe in dinosaurs.

8. Male and female, God created them; male and female, we ordain them.

7. You don’t have to check your brains at the door.

6. Pew aerobics.

5. Church year is color coded!

4. Free wine on Sunday.

3. All of the pageantry, none of the guilt.

2. You don’t have to know how to swim to get baptized.

And the number one reason for being an Episcopalian:

1. No matter what you believe, there’s bound to be at least one other Episcopalian who agrees with you.

I can dig that.

After the Church shindig, we Shakespeare on the Boardwalk – Much ado about nothing. TM’s neighbor Kevin was in it, as was Guppy (twin beach players )

after a bit of local and classic culture, we headed home to catch up with The Office and My Name is Earl.

Added a syndicated feed of BHK’s favorite meteorolgist – Kim Martucci – I should notify Kim that she’s being syndicated here, just so she knows to check. It’s not a full feed, just a clip and a link to the main site – which is *quite* active and colorful, if you follow my fonts. Her journal gave BHK a quickie girl-crush on Kim.

Forgot to mention that I got a little TF2 in last night (about 45 min), while BHK checked her mail… My stats are still terrible, but I had a good time. I thought I’d gotten some achievements, but I’m not seeing ’em here… probably too few folks on the server for it to count.

My fave Classes are still the Engineer and the Scout, with medic going further back since folks are busy using him for all the unlockable stuff. Gold Rush is a great addition, too.

A new Portal map pack was just released from We Create Stuff. This map pack are actual Portal maps based off of the flash version of Portal, a 2D title that features 40 levels.

Hey!! Reboot is coming back? Possibly more info here, but who knows the rumor level.

The recipe – Steamed catfish in Banana Leaves sounds really tasty… but is even better as an expletive. Something Perry White might utter.

9264 – Friday

Gentle evening last night – watched 27 dresses with BHK and Chris over supper – gigantic bean salad, with left over zucchini and Thai curry soup. Delicious.

The movie wasn’t bad as far as chick flicks go… The most curious thing to me was that there were no minorities, elderly or babies in the film of note. With the exception of the Girl’s dad, everyone was a white 20-something…and I think of New York being pretty diverse.

I’m going to go from full beard back down to goatee… it’s getting warmer now. Monday will be a fresh week!

Not sure if I like the new icon… I may look a bit too serious here. I wonder how much the tone of my journal has changed?

Has technology made us ruder? Put your stupid phone down for one second and read this to see.

I likely have at *least* twice the mass of most other bodies.

The formula for force: force = mass x acceleration
The formula for momentum: momentum = mass x velocity
The formula for impulse: average force x time

I suspect that I have only about 1/2 the acceleration though, so it likely balances out, force-wise.

Last Night’s Din-din is even better as breakfast (due to it self-marinating) Lazy bachelor recipe, but here it is.

Tasty bean salad

3 cans black beans
2 cans of corn
1 can garbanzo beans
red and green onion, chopped
fresh cilantro to taste
sliced mushrooms
1/2 tsp. cumin
pinch of cinnamon
pepper to season
juice from a lemon
1/2 to 1 cup balsamic vinegar
1/4 to 1/2 cup olive oil
salt
pepper
cayenne

Drain everything that comes in a can and put it in a big bowl. Chop all of the veggies and add them in. Mix the olive oil, vinegar and lemon juice in a separate bowl, then stir it in. Add the seasonings and adjust to taste.

How they reworked Brando into the new Superman movie. Pretty nifty!

Brings Overture to “Die schöne Galathee” by Franz von Suppé (mp3) to mind, for some reason.(I really like the Pygmalion scene)

Acoustic location was used from mid-WW1 to the early years of WW2 for the passive detection of aircraft by picking up the noise of the engines. It was rendered obsolete before and during WW2 by the introduction of radar, which was far more effective.

Regardless of the very real threat that terrorists might find a way to use this frighteningly accessible technology against us on our own soil, it gives us some comfort to know that when we find ourselves trapped and alone, fighting for our lives against the Gorn on a desolate alien planet made of nothing but Diet Coke and Mentos, by god, we’ll know what to do.

6910 – Thor's Day

Training went well.. a good number of concerned parents showed up, and everything rolled smoothly. Big Kahuna was a surprise visitor… must’ve come right over after getting off of the plane. The School staff was wonderfully courteous and very helpful… the media center brought back many memories as a page, cataloger and bookstore employee. I always did like the kid’s books the most.

Tech trouble seems to be simmered down now. Hopefully it’ll stay that way.

I’ve been getting into the habit of picking up a little dinner once a week or so on the way home from work at this little carribean diner over by the bus stop. I’ve become rather well-liked there, because I appreciate good food, and take a moment to talk to the folks during the slow times. Lots of Veggie, even Vegan options to eat, which surprised me, and is what keeps me coming back. Good food, lots of it, inexpensive and a friendly atmosphere. What’s not to like? There are advantages to not looking like a suit… I think folks there are a lot more comfortable talking with a “clean cut” hippie-type guy, at least at first. They make a Veggie-mango stir-fry sort of thing that is awesome, and the plantains are decadent.

6865 – backdated from Thursday

I decided briefly that I wasn’t comfortable with the C’s around Newt. I think that Jan or even Danny might get careless, and do something that would cause Newt to somehow get hurt out of the house… I’m being irrational. I came close to having a panic attack just thinking of poor Newt, out in a hurricane. It sort of saddens me to be this distrustful of Dan and his wife, but they just don’t know better, and are prone to carelessness. I don’t think that I should stay, here, but if I go to Danny’s place, I’m going to have to lay down some ground rules. Maybe I’ll stay with Newt in the guest bathroom the whole time. [update: Of course ,I ended up going to Dan and Janet’s, and everything turned out fine)

pretend-sushi made with twinkies and dried fruit… I think I’m more partial to the kebabs.

Looking for more potential hurricane cams? Check this old entry for lots o’ links. note that some links may be broken, but the Sun-Sentinel’s has always been pretty reliable.

I tried out the evil genius demo… pretty cute, but I’m not sure how much repeat game play it holds. Being a Bond-style villain is fun… and the music is groovy. Sort of a sim-city version of Evil base management.

6792 – Offer not good after curfew in sectors R or Q.

Snickers with almonds is very tasty when frozen, but I preferred the chilled tangerine I also had for breakfast. Tasty morsels. I don’t use the word morsel often enough. Or Scrumdiddlyumptious. Ok, ok…I lied, dear journal…. I say scrumdiddlyumptious at least once or twice a month. Though, to make up for the “morsel” imbalance, I also hardly ever say “Oh, snap”.

The soft, spicy odor of incense, wafting in from the corridor between my bedroom and bath brings me calm on hectic days. It’s getting easier for me to realize when I’m tense lately, and once I know that I’m stressed, I can channel that attitude out to make way for more productive behavior.

When I decide to veg out…I usually sit Indian-style or other comfortable position, usually with Newt nearby. I let all the random jetsam spinning around in my mind slowly settle onto the floor of my mind for proper storage or disposal. Sometimes whole books hit the ground when the mental wind slows down, but usually it’s closer to fortune-cookie slips of paper and multi-colored index cards with quickly scrawled information on it, including “continued on card number XXX” written on the bottom. Sometimes the connected card is nearby or someplace that I can retrieve it quickly, other times, it’s probably in one of the piles off in one of the corners.

I picture my mental room as octagonal-shaped, having hardwood floors and highlights, a network of bookshelf-columns radiating out from the center, and glass walls leading up to a covered dome with a skylight on top. Secret Memories of an ancestor that was into trepanation? I don’t see any self-surgery in my future. The amount of light inside reflects my mindset, with thick drapes that could blot out an atomic blast when darkness is absolutely needed.

There are monkeys, too. Or Ghosts. Maybe Monkey Ghosts. That’s it. Probably genetically enhanced… or with some sort of mystic talisman thingie.

Storywise, sometimes I don’t see myself as a main character. It’s easy to fall in the role of support, or walk-on… no limelight, but more like Wilson on Home Improvement, though, if I was to stretch the example, I suppose that I could grab the Al role here and there. I try to be helpful and am mostly soft spoken, a little too off the beaten path to be a primary focus. I suspect that’d change if I was under the same roof with my sweetheart, rather than having us end up being the wacky neighbors.

Then again, there was the Grizzly Adams TV show. Random trivia… Ben the bear was named for Ben Franklin.

Whims got me itchin’ for doughnuts…she makes hers with prepackaged dough… I didn’t have any, but I found this little recipe.. and the bread maker!

You bleed, Kirock! Behold a god who bleeds!

I thought blogshares would be more interesting than it is. (BlogShares is a fantasy stock market where web logs are the companies. Players invest fictional dollars on shares in blogs. Blogs are valued by their incoming links and add value to other blogs by linking to them. Prices can go up or down based on trading and the underlying value of the blog.) The site is very slow… almost to the point of not being playable. I’ll give it a few days, and see if it shifts in any direction, one way or the other.

I’m ranked as the 9th top player for august 2003 so far. (Scott von Berg 20726.49% growth -Rank: 4208, $104,132.43 current worth / $500.00 start of month)

As it stands now, I’ve only invested in my own… when you register your blog, you get 1000 shares of your own journal, but maybe I’ll expand outward to folks on my reading list as well. Starting with $500 virtual dollars, and the stock value of my site, my portfolio is worth $104,271.60 I set up a goofy little RSS feed (scotto_shares) that’ll tell me when / how the share value fluctuates. Oddly, since my journal can be accessed in three distinctly different links, via http://scottobear.livejournal.com, http://www.livejournal.com/~scottobear and http://www.livejournal.com/users/scottobear, it’s valued in three different ways, depending on investments. s.l.com is currently worth $49.91 each – 249.52 p/e, ~ is worth $34.42 each -172.10 p/e, and users is $19.62 each – 98.03 p/e

Looking at things, I see that chrishaas has already placed a bid on the most expensive of the available shares, but at no profit to me. He’d stand a greater chance of profit by bidding on public shares in the “users or ~” version. For simplicity of bidding, I’ve made those mentioned in this paragraph as direct links to the respective blogshares. If you want to play, I recommend the one that’s going for $19.62 each, rather than the $49.91. (Less than half price, with growth potential. I think the middle one “users” has the most growth possibility, because that’s the default listing.)

Other folks listed on blogshares that I might look into investing in (- (typed in to the search, many on my list haven’t been listed I’m tempted to post my reading list here, so that they get spidered) edbook (here), flying_blind (here), meredith (here), sweetalyssm (here) and tarpo (here). If anyone else sets up an account, or ends up on blogshares, let me know, so I can invest. 🙂 The above listings were spidered (many from my journal, I’d imagine), and aren’t officially “on the market” yet.

Of course, totally private or friends only-blogs aren’t tradable, nor are “non-indexed sites” as there’s nothing for the public to link to or track. Communities also seem to be out of the action, which is a shame, because I imagine the would do well. Also, Weblogs.com has to be active in your userinfo, I think.

Regarding the Vampire game… they’ve added a new element. Peacekeepers. There are flyers pasted up on many walls in the city, advertising “Peacekeepers Missions”. There are very small quite useless maps scrawled on the poorly photocopies scraps of paper, but the addresses are quite clear – the newbie mission is at Emerald and 67th, while the others are at Unicorn and 33rd and Emerald and 33rd respectively. It looks like ‘mission’ is used in the sense of a building, rather than the sense of a quest, but it’s not very clear at all.

The Expedition Company… seems normal enough for vacations and getaways until you get to the part about the hollow earth expedition.

Nifty sounding drink that I’ve never consumed – Dead Lizard

seemingly normal doughnutsew… who makes a chocolate frosted apple-filled doughnut? I just ate it for breakfast…my bro brought me the doughnut last night… he went on a goodie run, and dropped it off late. Another perq of having him next door, to be sure! 🙂

I thought it’d be Bavarian cream or something. It’s an unusual combination of flavors. not bad, just unexpected. it was a glazed, filled doughnut, with chocolate icing on top… you figure… custard or cream, right?

Wrong-o… Apple-cinnamon.

Nice sugar rush to follow, though, I’m sure. 🙂

Ok… off to work, Mr. Scotto, chocolate/apple gizzard guy.
