At least 45 people, most of them voodoo priests, have been lynched in Haiti since the beginning of the cholera epidemic by angry mobs blaming them for the spread of the disease, officials said.
“People who practice voodoo have nothing to do with the cholera epidemic,” said Max Beauvoir, the head of a voodoo organization in the Caribbean country.
Some of the victims were killed with machetes, others were burned alive by mobs that added tires and gasoline to stoke the fires. The cholera outbreak started in October.
The victims have been targeted because of “misinformation” that had been circulating in the community that voodoo practitioners were spreading cholera by using witchcraft, according to communications Minister Marie-Laurence Lassegue.

Dr. D passed away last week. You’ll be fondly remembered. Thanks for introducing me to Umberto Eco, and not talking to me like a kid.
Tonight when I get home, we should be at the final clip for hanging up ornaments. The in-laws went to visit BHK’s grandparents pre-Christmas last weekend, so we deemed it better for them to rest up.
Tonight’s a lunar eclipse – I won’t be staying up to see it, but should be a nifty show!
Let’s summarize the weekend a bit.
To play catch up with pictures posted earlier – Went with Amy & Wanda to Tuba Christmas @ Our Lady Star of the Sea church in St. Mary’s and then had supper at Laughing Buddha – a lot of fun, and more interactive than I’d have thought. Sunday was otherwise pretty exhausting for both BHK and me.
Saturday – we spotted a snowman by post office, and put some sideways disco balls out on the ground around our house to emulate snowfall. About all we did was listen to holiday music, and then I played a lot of Sam & Max
Friday – Rested at the house… didn’t do much of anything, really.
Finally, The Good Guys was canceled. Boo. I loved that show.

Let’s see… What has been up to since Cheeto (Justin) brought our Christmas tree over?
I got my invite to the private beta for Little big planet 2!
Poor Pyewacket hasn’t been feeling very well lately – he was logy and seems to be working on a great big hairball. BHK is getting some meds for him today – hopefully he’ll be feeling better soon.
I was saddened to hear that Dr. D is now in assisted care – my best thoughts are going to his family.
Saturday was BHK’s crafts / holiday party – just enough people arrived to fill every seat in the house. At the most critical of mass, I went into retreat – hit the man-cave and worked on the computer in there for a bit. Amongst the guests were Amy R., Holly, In-laws, Mandy, Tara and Van (in alphabetical order, no less!) – There was more food than we could eat for a week, and the guests brought food too, despite our best entreaties. I fiddled with Goldeneye: Source and HIS (Heroes in the Sky) – I much preferred the former to the latter.
Amy R. is the newest fan of Swarm of the Snakehead. Totally unrelated – Human Centipede is now availabe for netflix streaming. (I do not think I’ll bother with it, though, unless it’s to distress BHK)
Quite a few passes by “Santa” and his pickup truck… has a lit up Reindeer and Santa dangling from the vehicle… and has been doing orbits around our town more than once or twice.
Van stayed for a bit after closeup – he had never played Catan before, but that didn’t stop him from winning against us handily.
Sunday, we rested up most of the morning, but the in-laws hijacked us to go to Men’s day at Maerten’s Jewelry… I snuck over to Play’n’trade to see what was up – 3 used games for 2 wasn’t a bad deal, but I’m still pretty well stocked for toys on both the wii and the ps3. I did look for family game night, seeing as James had mentioned it, and BHK loves to do boardgames – Catan on the ps3, or anything on Yucata.de is her vibe.
Looking at the archives… looks like Pye and the tree are quite the habit this time of year.

a week from now, my long weekend in virginia will have come to an end… likely driving back home so I can get to work on time for tuesday. thanks, columbus… or erikson, or whoever first got here to settle in. trans-siberian asians or whatever proto-natives first roamed the banks to see boats coming to greet them.
today went pretty well, dear journal. regular length workday, a little flippin` pizza special and a lot of processes put in place.
mafia ii was fun, but I`m still really caught up in red dead redemption. zombie western coming this month has me quite enthused to continue, too.
brisk day today – rainy and in the 40s-50s.
some kids playing the fool on the other side of the train… not moldy scented today, but the conversations seem louder.
at chinatown now.. major switch from kids to hipsters.
not nearly so crowded today… but l`enfant station is still yet to come.
sleepy…perhaps a travel nap will keep me wakeful for dinner.

Happy St. Patty’s, Dear Journal!
Spring is becoming more and more evident every day.
I forgot to mention a few things yesterday, given the photo/video nature of my limited entry. Father in-law toddled off to New York this week, so BHK and I are playing cruise directors to the mother in law. BHK stopped at Ch’NaCa for a pair of #6 needles, and I finally used store credit and a gift card to pick up God Of War III and Wii Sports Resort.
Chris took us out to supper at 3 brothers pizza a salad and Sicilian style- half meatball for BHK the more omnivorous, and half mixed veggies for Chris and myself. We planned on doing a little minigolf, but it closed before we could get around to playing. Instead, the gang promptly headed home, and Chris enjoyed beating me at the sword “chop duel” game. BHK excels at Basketball / Archery , and my games of preference are the air combat and wake boarding. Golf is pretty keen, too.
BHK and I got a little wanderlust this morning, and went to take a peek at Aardvark… I was pleasantly surprised to see they were still open, though they’re moving at the end of the month, and stopping all video rentals – just comics & games now. Upside, we got a fistful of movies for $7 (~a buck each) –
- Midnight in the Garden of Good & Evil
- Gormenghast (vol 1 & 2)
- Near Dark
- District B13
- Feast of All Saints pt1 & 2
- Night Watch – Extended
Not too bad – I’ve only ever seen the first and last of those films.
A, we went to Play’n’trade and I swapped some old controllers, software and $20ish for Infamous, Drake’s Fortune, and Command and Conquer: Red Alert 3 (Games are buy two, get one free – basically I bought one, and got one on credit, and got one free.) Not sure if I’d go to PNT unless I had loot to swap out, but they do price match game stop, and take best buy / game stop gift cards! I’m pretty good for a *LOOOONG* time for PS3 console games.
I was pleasantly surprised to see Shaun and his sister there – I don’t thing we’d seen him since the polar bear swim… and we still have some of his stuff at the house. We made plans to play a little Ticket to Ride or Small World with them both sometime soon.
BHK got a little nibble to eat at the local fried chicken joint / Japanese grill – not as good as My Grill was up in Deale, but it was quite yummy and good-sized portions.
Came home, and picked up Chris – watched Midnight in the Garden of Good and Evil while having a nibble of Chinese food. BHK had never seen the whole thing .. it makes me want to go back to Savannah (our Georgia journey pics are a bit out of whack, it seems there are a couple of FL pix in there, but most are properly tagged)

Today should be Pye day, in honor of Pyewacket as well as the Irrational number and circular dessert! Pye couldn’t care less, as long as he has a warm lap.
Picture compliments of B3ta – It sums up Pyewacket (when not a lump) pretty well.

I was a little saddened to hear that there.com is closing on 3/9/2010. I had a lot of fun during my time at the site, and still have a nice friendship with some folks from there as a result. I wonder what ever happened to the rest of the gang, like Whims and Chias?
Went to Walmart for some supplies, and I ended up grabbing Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood for $19… That’s it for ps3 titles, until I play one of ’em to the end.
My current catalog for the PS3 is –
- Lego Indiana Jones: Original Adventures – we love all games lego – the only one that hasn’t totally enchanted us yet is lego batman for the wii, but that may change, too.
- Little Big Planet: Game of the year version – my current fave. easy on the eyes, tricky levels, and an online community that’s fantastic.
- Uncharted 2 – my first game, and I really like it a lot – haven’t played it too much, but it’s a hoot thus far
- Call of Juarez: Bound in Blood – hard, but with infinite lives, I suspect I’ll make it through eventually. good to have a western.
- The Darkness – pretty evil, but a solid game. I’ve been fortunate in my selection thus far.

Happy President’s Day! Happy Belated Year of the Tiger (GO NEWT!) Happy Belated Valentines Day!
valentines breakfast at bob evans w/ nailles – it was tasty, but I think my order was the only one that wasn’t goofed in some way.
Sean came over for a moment – brought us popcorn and a movie to watch!
The picture I took of my footprint in the snow looks weirdly inverted when viewed small.
BHK officially got her Vallies Day Gifts – a couple of handmade cards, a hat made of llama yarn (black, with knitted pictures of bunnies and weather on it. ), a llama pin made from fimo, and Style Savvy for the DS. If you want to visit her pretend-play fashion store, it’s in Velvet City at the Chiffon Mall, Floor 16 – Green La . Buy lots of goodies , dear journal!
Speaking of goodies, I now have Little Big Planet (game of the year edition) for my ps3. Looking to game with me, dear journal? look me up as scottobear in the ps3 community.
I got new pair of Jeans for Valentines day from the in-laws – nicely timed, as one of my old pair of chinos tore about an hour before. Larry and Chris had Ice cream and cake for Chris’s B’day, and we lounged about and watched some of the olympics.
So far today, all I’ve done is look for work, update my journal, and notice that my beard is just about all grown out, thanks to the recent snow.
