Surprise! Alien Planet Made of Diamond Discovered

Tasty Salad at lunch, with lots of work on either side of it.

Made a date with BHK to see the Pietasters in May! A little Ska never hurts! Also made plans to go get some pancakes with Duncan, J, and Sean this weekend!

Bloody Fun Day is a strategic arcade game where players control the Reaper as he plows his way through little critters. Every time Death sticks his scythe into one of the creatures, he gains points but loses health. Destroying red creatures will bring his life back up.

Each set of creatures killed leave behind eggs which need to be left alone to hatch into even more critters. Building up points also gives Death special abilities which can be activated in order to grab even more points. It’s all about bagging as many points as possible before you run out of life.

The game mechanics work really well and it’s a very nice concept. There’s a tutorial to get you going and a couple of game modes to choose from. Play it over at Kongregate. (via indiegames.com)

Okra has come in with the first zucchini – vile, slimy okra. We’ll see if BHK can win me over to this veggie, like she did with Zucchini.

In the first case to review the government’s secret evidence for holding a detainee at Guantánamo Bay, Cuba, a federal appeals court found that accusations against a Muslim from western China held for more than six years were based on bare and unverifiable claims. The unclassified parts of the decision were released on Monday.

With some derision for the Bush administration’s arguments, a three-judge panel said the government contended that its accusations against the detainee should be accepted as true because they had been repeated in at least three secret documents.

The court compared that to the absurd declaration of a character in the Lewis Carroll poem “The Hunting of the Snark”: “I have said it thrice: What I tell you three times is true.”

So, how many human rights advocates are going to boycott all of the sponsors of the 2008 Summer olympics in Beijing ?

Numerous human rights violations have taken place in China because of the Olympics, according to an Amnesty International report. In 2006, Beijing implemented a detention without trial scheme called “Re-education Through Labor” which targets people who have committed minor offenses and are forced to work long hours and can be detained for 4 years. Concerns over the games also include the potential for boycotts from pro-Tibetan organizations such as Students for a Free Tibet as well as from organizations such as Amnesty International upset with China’s involvement in the crisis in Darfur.

Biggest tricks for me to avoid would be be –

Johnson and Johnson – very big company – not sure if we could dodge every tendril. I can rattle off at least 5 of those items in our home right now.

GE – everywhere, also owns a ton of stuff – (including TiVo, Universal Studios, and USA network, home of Psych)

Coca-cola – everywhere, but avoidable if you take note of what you’re drinking, including water.

Visa – well, that’s my bank’s debit card, and almost every place on the planet takes it… so, unless I want to live and trade with cash-only businesses, that’s a deal breaker. Too big to defeat.

Items of little to no difficulty –

McDonalds – not hard for me to miss out on – we only ever go for shamrock shakes or pumpkin at halloween. Easily avoided.

Samsung / Panasonic – easy peasy. I get 99% of my electronics from other sources, though our tv is a samsung right now.

VW? Awww… you guys let me down. Would I have to boycott playing punch-buggy?

Adidas – no problem missing out on them.

UPS – I do use them on occasion, but there are alternatives.

Snickers, Tsingtao, and Budwiser – I can do without all of those.

Kodak – plenty of other options there, too, but they’re in a lot of places. depending on the extremism, some might want to forego any book that used kodak photography or processes. Movies, etc. They are teamed with Motorola and Lexar, for that matter.

Who can say? I won’t be that extreme, but sometimes I feel that I should.

‘Zero’ chance lottery tickets stun some players – Through a request filed under the Freedom of Information Act, Fishwick’s firm was able to obtain records that showed the Virginia State Lottery sold $85 million in tickets for which no top prize was available.

9332 – Monday

Good solid day of work today – getting a lot done and covered. Met the new VP, and he seems like a really nice guy who knows his stuff. I wish I could advise him more on commuting, but he’s a car guy, and not a train or bus sort.

After work, BHK and I went out to lemongrass for a little date – the food was excellent and the company wonderful. It was raining like gangbusters outside, so we stayed for dessert… the Thai doughnuts and fried ice cream were also great, but I tihnk I ate way too much. After the weather let up a bit, we went to petsmart to look at the critters, and saw an army gal with a haircut that made her look a bit like donald duck.

Went home, watched the pilot of middleman. I liked it – it was a little sticky, but forgivable in a pilot episode… There was a super-intelligent gorilla in a tracksuit, which was pretty cool, but I’d prefer that they not mention comics so much. I didn’t need a Grodd reference. He was more like the Mod Gorilla boss to me, anyhow. The “filthy paws / damn dirty ape” quote was expected, but really, that’s forgivable. I’ll be watching it again, and expect it’ll gain some momentum if all goes well.

In honor of Swarm of the Snakehead, I made my own proto – snakehead beastie (you can download him at the link) in Spore yesterday. BHK’s bitey monopod will be uploaded soon, too.

George Carlin passed away. I think that his routines in recent years got a little… I don’t know… Lame? Turned more from radical or wacky to just whiney “get off my lawn you kids” humor? I feel the same way about him the way I feel about a lot of folks I liked more when I was younger – maybe I outgrew him, like I did Harlan Ellison’s angry young guy shtick as it turned into an angry old guy bit. As I age, it gets harder to be entertained by that sort of thing. Maybe they both just ran out of whatever mojo kept them fresh and interesting to me. I still like the old stuff. Not as angry, not as bitter… things can have bite and not seem just sad. He was a great satirist during the bulk of his life, and I’m sure he will be missed.

I saw him in “concert”, at FAU, ages ago with Jeremy Dawsey. I don’t remember where James was, or why he wasn’t along. We had a *fantastic* time, and it was likely the only time I’ve seen a comedian in the last 20 years that wasn’t “schticky”… fat guy telling fat jokes, lesbian telling lesbian jokes, black guy doing black jokes, prop comics… etc, etc, etc.

I’ll just choose to remember this:

Some people say the glass is half empty.
Others say the glass if half full.
I say the glass is too big.

–George Carlin

LOS ANGELES — Hollywood will enshrine an eclectic bunch in its famous curbside Walk of Fame next year, including Hugh Jackman, Ben Kingsley, The Village People and fictional Tinker Bell.

Recipients of the sidewalk stars also include Felicity Huffman, William H. Macy, Cameron Diaz, Robert Downey Jr., Tim Burton, Leslie Caron, Charles Durning, Ralph Fiennes, William Petersen, Kyra Sedgwick, John Stamos, Mark Burnett, Chuck Lorre, Kenny “Baby Face” Edmonds, Dave Koz, The Miracles, Doug Morris, Rush, Shakira, KFI radio personality Bill Handel and KCRW host Harry Shearer, who also provides voices for characters on “The Simpsons.”

Cheeta isn’t on the list. The animal actor, whose credits include the 1967 comedy “Doctor Dolittle” and the “Tarzan” movies, was trying for the seventh time to get a sidewalk star.

His handlers had launched an online petition to get supporters to urge the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to give him a star in 2009.

Guinness World Records has called the 76-year-old chimp the oldest living, non-human primate. Cheeta is retired and lives in Palm Springs.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s Walk of Fame Committee chose the recipients, who were ratified by the board of directors Thursday.

Seriously? Tinkerbell got a star, instead of Cheeta? She didn’t speak, and has only starred in one film! Cheeta’s an actual being, not just a drawing. What’s next? The NBC Peacock?

Humpday! Midweek, and it feels it. I was happy to rediscover that we get President’s day off next month… Three-day weekends are a wonderful thing. Added bonus is that my b-day falls on a weekend this year, so that Saturday is mine, all mine!

BHK and Cathy got together today to do more straightening and space management at the house. One recent change is the move of the love seat from the office to the living room… newtcam archives show that Pye doesn’t seem to mind the change of pace.

“After eight years and some $65 million, the state of Maryland is taking its first steps to return to an accountable, paper-ballot based voting system. Governor Martin O’Malley has announced an initial outlay of $6.5 million towards the $20 million cost of an optical system which will scan and tally the votes while the paper ballots are retained as a backup. The new (or old) system is expected to be in place by 2010 — or four years before the state finishes paying off the bill for the touch-screen system.”

Had a bit of a nightmare about using the walker last night. Forgive my recycling of old doodles. Dreamt of being poked and prodded, cut open and stapled shut.

I’ve already had two surgeries.. one in 1994, and another in 2003.

Makes me twitchy, just thinking about it. After being cut up, I had to go shopping for tennis balls to put under the walker’s feet.

Milton Blahyi, a former feared rebel commander in Liberia’s brutal civil war, has admitted to taking part in human sacrifices as part of traditional ceremonies intended to ensure victory in battle.

He said the sacrifices “included the killing of an innocent child and plucking out the heart, which was divided into pieces for us to eat.”

There had been numerous rumours of human sacrifices during the 1979-93 conflict but this is the first time anyone has admitted publicly to the practice.

Mr Blahyi, 37, is better known in Liberia as “General Butt Naked” because he went into combat with no clothes on, to scare the enemy.

He is now an Evangelist preacher, who prefers to use the name Joshua.

LIMA (AFP) – Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery crash to Earth in their area, regional authorities said Monday.

Around midday Saturday, villagers were startled by an explosion and a fireball that many were convinced was an airplane crashing near their remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia.

Residents complained of headaches and vomiting brought on by a “strange odor,” local health department official Jorge Lopez told Peruvian radio RPP.

Seven policemen who went to check on the reports also became ill and had to be given oxygen before being hospitalized, Lopez said.

Rescue teams and experts were dispatched to the scene, where the meteorite left a 100-foot-wide (30-meter-wide) and 20-foot-deep (six-meter-deep) crater, said local official Marco Limache.

“Boiling water started coming out of the crater and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby. Residents are very concerned,” he said.

Some gruesome news:

CARACAS (Reuters) – A Venezuelan man who had been declared dead woke up in the morgue in excruciating pain after medical examiners began their autopsy.

Carlos Camejo, 33, was declared dead after a highway accident and taken to the morgue, where examiners began an autopsy only to realize something was amiss when he started bleeding. They quickly sought to stitch up the incision on his face.

“I woke up because the pain was unbearable,” Camejo said, according to a report on Friday in leading local newspaper El Universal.

His grieving wife turned up at the morgue to identify her husband’s body only to find him moved into a corridor — and alive.

Reuters could not immediately reach hospital officials to confirm the events. But Camejo showed the newspaper his facial scar and a document ordering the autopsy.

The forensic expert called to examine the willing victim of German cannibal Armin Meiwes has written a book about his most bizarre case. He recalls his horror at seeing the four-and-a-half-hour video Meiwes made of the killing and disembowelment.

Forensic expert Manfred Risse will never forget the day he was called to examine the contents of Armin Meiwes’ freezer. The German cannibal (more…) had killed a man who had begged to be devoured, chopped him up into meal-sized portions, and eaten about 20 kilos (44 pounds) of him.

The 2002 killing and subsequent trials made global headlines, and Meiwes is assured a prominent place in the dark annals of murderous perversion. Risse, 53, deputy head of the forensic institute in the central German city of Giessen, has just written a book about the case and has spoken about it for the first time in an interview with Focus magazine.

About examining a severed foot, Risse writes: “Meiwes had placed it on a plate, stuck a knife and fork in it, added sauce, took a picture of it and posted it on the Internet.” Risse also had to scrutinize around 30 packets of flesh, some of them labelled. “One read ‘Neck Filet, 10/03/01,’ and other labels reminded me of supermarket labels, for example ‘Minced Meat With Sauce.'”

Risse recalls the horror he felt when he watched the four-and-a-half hour video Meiwes made of the killing and subsequent butchering.

“I got sweaty hands for the first time in my career; shivers ran down my spine” said Risse. “I’ve been doing this job for 20 years, have carried out 5,000 autopsies and seen more than 30,000 corpses. In terms of nauseating and repugnant sights, the cannibal film burst the boundaries of what I had seen to that date.”

Meiwes, a computer repair man, had placed advertisements on the Internet seeking men who were willing to be “slaughtered.” Bernd Brandes, a 43-year-old computer engineer from Berlin, responded, and the killing took place in Meiwes’ rambling half-timbered house in the town of Rotenburg.

The infamous video was shown in court, but the media and public weren’t allowed to see it. One scene shows Brandes, already suffering from severe loss of blood after having his penis severed at his own insistence, saying: “If I’m still alive tomorrow morning, we’ll eat my balls.”

“It was a horrific scene,” recalls Risse. “I couldn’t believe that a man so seriously hurt could say a thing like that. It sounded like a bad comedy. But it was real.”

The video also shows Meiwes hanging up the body from a meat hook and cutting it up. “It was evident that Meiwes had no anatomical knowledge whatsoever. He couldn’t distinguish between the colon and the small intestine, didn’t know where the liver was and was astonished at the color of the meat. He said: ‘I thought it would be lighter. One learns from experience.'”

Risse’s book “Last Supper of the Murderers,” which can only be sold to adults, goes on sale in Germany on Sept. 20. He said he wrote it to show the public what really happened. “There’s always been cannibalism,” Risse said. “But the fact that someone wanted to have themselves be killed, slaughtered and devoured, is unique in the world.”

Meiwes had his sentence increased from eight and a half years to life in a 2006 retrial (more…) after the prosecution appealed against the initial verdict for being too lenient.

Portions of the pre-dawn total lunar eclipse will be visible, weather permitting, across the country. Only in the West will the entire Aug. 28 event be viewable before sunrise, however.

The moon enters the Earth’s full shadow, or umbra, at 4:51 a.m. EDT (1:51 a.m. PDT). It enters the total-eclipse phase at 5:32 EDT (2:52 PDT) and the event ends after sunrise on the East coast and at 4:22 a.m. PDT.

Chewing through a very solid work week – A lot of items on the desk to weed through. SQL is taking top priority, given our release date, but there are a lot of items to deal with from various aspects of the web site to planning budgets.

It’s a pretty challenging gig, and I like it like that. Not a lot of time to learn, but learn-as-you-go seems to be the rule for any tech thing nowadays.

Not enough code to worry about at work? Here’s some icehouse game java in the works, too. I’m not even going to look at that stuff until sometime in 2008, most likely – after crunch time at the office.

Taco night with the in-laws and BHK’s longtime pal Lucas (edit – LUKE! NOT LUC!) – he’s in town for a span before going off to NY or CA for work. I hope we get to have him over a few more nights before he launches – perhaps he’ll be interested in playing some parlor games in addition to any chick flicks that he and BHK both seem to dig.

I am very weary tonight – hitting the sack early. I don’t know if it’s the rainy weather, or what, but I’ve been feeling a need to snooze. I’m all for cool, misty days, and if a little sleepiness is a result, that’s ok, too. I think that I may be a bit tired due to a lack of unwinding when I first got home… I’ll try to kick off my shoes and change into some play clothes a bit sooner tomorrow.

Hello Kitty
Police must wear this shameful, shameful mark

BANGKOK, Thailand – Thai police officers who break rules will be forced to wear hot pink armbands featuring “Hello Kitty,” the Japanese icon of cute, as a mark of shame, a senior officer said Monday.

Police officers caught littering, parking in a prohibited area, or arriving late — among other misdemeanors — will be forced to stay in the division office and wear the armband all day, said Police Col. Pongpat Chayaphan. The officers won’t wear the armband in public.

The striking armband features Hello Kitty sitting atop two hearts.

“Simple warnings no longer work. This new twist is expected to make them feel guilt and shame and prevent them from repeating the offense, no matter how minor,” said Pongpat, acting chief of the Crime Suppression Division in Bangkok.

“(Hello) Kitty is a cute icon for young girls. It’s not something macho police officers want covering their biceps,” Pongpat said.

He said police caught breaking the law will be subject the same fines and penalties as any other members of the public.

“We want to make sure that we do not condone small offenses,” Pongpat said, adding that the CSD believed that getting tough on petty misdemeanors would lead to fewer cases of more serious offenses including abuse of power and mistreatment of the public by police officers.

via jwz – Search for Lonesome George mate is long shot

While scientists search for a mate for “Lonesome George” — the last known survivor of a species of Galapagos tortoise — some say the effort to fend off extinction may be in vain. Even if a mate is found, George has not been interested in reproducing in the past and may not know how, former keepers and others who have worked with him said.

“He has problems … he probably never saw a female and male of his own species reproducing,” said Swiss biologist Sveva Grigioni, who worked with George 13 years ago.

Grigioni, now back in Switzerland, said she could normally get tortoises to ejaculate within minutes, but spent months manually stimulating George and never extracted semen from him.

Age is not George’s problem. He is estimated at between 60 and 90 years old, and could live to be 200 and still reproduce, scientists say.

The visual differences in tortoises from different islands were among the features of the Galapagos that helped 19th Century British naturalist Charles Darwin formulate his theory of evolution. Since then, the tortoises have been hunted by pirates for their meat and their habitat eaten away by goats introduced onto the islands. George, who weighs 198 pounds, was found on Pinta in 1971.

Reviewing Openads for the company’s ad server for the web. it seems pretty reputable and reliable, thus far.

Fire drill this morning was a welcome break in the day – cool outside, everyone seemed laid back and calm – helped move the rest of the time that much more rapidly. the 2pm meeting went well… lots of good information for me to ruminate over the next few projects. I really dig that I’m in an environment that will allow me to use the skills I have! (Last gig wasn’t bad, but a lot of repetition. This time, there’s a lot of room for creative thought along with brute force.

Day closed with S’mores over a fire pit, some preview fireworks, and then Bugah and I played a bit of “Destroy All Humans”. Not a bad thing.

8899 – Sunday

We spent most of the day out and about, Geocaching with the Newsoms. They’re really into it, with a little over 100 finds in recent memory. It was fun tooling around a bit and seeing what’s what. I also dropped off tinkle pig in a cache… time for her to see the world. I retrieved a toy soldier cast from civil war bullets, who will ride with Bruce Moose and Gaytor until a suitable resting ground is found for him. The cemetary caches are almost always my fave – the woods were a hoot too, but ticks are a real fear for the kids, especially since Em was out sick just recently. (Heck, nobody wants lyme disease.)

A brief synopsis of Cache visits-

Dropped off placed Hula Wyvern (Travel Bug Dog Tag) in Little Southern Maryland School [visit log]
Dropped off placed “Wajima, Japan” Unite for Diabetes Travel Bug (Unite for Diabetes Travel Bug) in Little Southern Maryland School [visit log]
Found it found Little Southern Maryland School (Traditional Cache) [visit log]
Found it found Parkkin Cache (Traditional Cache) [visit log]

Found it found Time is the key (Traditional Cache) [visit log]

Aftwerwards, we took a quick pitstop at Aardvarks, had an ice cream and picked up kanoodle for BHK (I’m sure I’ll be playing it too.)

Spent a little more time puttering around Solomon’s Island, went to Stoneys for dinner. (their treat! yum!)

On the road between points, I got a call from my Mom, and it turns out that Bro isn’t in a work crew, but just a rehabilitation center. Taking classes, etc. Hopefully some of the lessons will stick, but if not, at least he’s out of circulation for a while.

After that, we paused at the Barker’s to water the Mom-in-Law’s plants, and to do a little dock-walking. I paused for a breather upstairs, but before I could get my nap on, Adam and Kendall showed up to say hi and to drop off some fireworks.

Man pummels vampire peacock

NEW YORK (AP) — A peacock that roamed into the parking lot of a Burger King in New York City was beaten by a man who insisted it was a vampire.

Animal control officials in Staten Island say the bird was beaten so fiercely that most of its tail feathers fell out and it had to be euthanized.

The seven-year-old male peacock wandered into the restaurant parking lot and perched on a car hood last week. Charmed employees had been feeding it bread when the man appeared.

A restaurant worker says the man grabbed the bird by the neck, hurled it to the ground and started stomping it. She says when he was asked what he was doing, he responded, “‘I’m killing a vampire!”‘

Employees called police, but the man ran when he saw them.

With more than 150,000 items, the Russel B. Nye Popular Culture Collection is a major scholarly resource for the study of popular culture from the 19th century to the present. The initial emphasis was on American popular culture, but materials from other countries are now collected as well. While not the largest of its kind in the nation, MSU’s popular culture collection is one of the most usable because of its early adoption of coherent planning that focuses efforts on a limited number of areas. Prominent in those plans are comic art; popular fiction including dime novels, story magazines, pulps, juvenile series books, detective fiction, mystery fiction, science fiction, western fiction and women’s/romance fiction; popular information materials including almanacs and etiquette manuals; and print materials relating to the popular performing arts. Collection parameters evolve to follow trends in popular fiction, recently expanding to include gay and lesbian pulp fiction. Noteworthy elements of the collection include a nearly complete set of Deadwood Dick dime novels and substantial numbers of Tom Swift and Horatio Alger books. In addition, the Comic Art Collection is a research collection of more than 200,000 pieces serving national and international scholars. The strengths of the comic art collection are U.S. comic books, European comic books, U.S. newspaper strips and works on the history and criticism of comics. Less extensive collections are maintained for African, Asian and Latin American comics; fotonovelas; animation; cartooning; Big Little Books; and comics tie-ins. Materials held include the Yellow Kid beginning in 1895 and the Famous Funnies No. l comic book from 1934. The emphasis is on graphic storytelling in the newspaper comics or newsstand comic book tradition to present a complete picture of what American comics’ readership has seen, especially since the middle of the 20th century.

Why don’t poor people save more money? Because they’re better off not to! At least according to a new study from the National Center for Policy Analysis. The LA Times reports :

Low-income households face “astronomical” penalties for saving, according to the report by the National Center for Policy Analysis. For example, each $1 saved by a single mother earning $15,000 a year could cost her $2.60 in higher taxes and lost government benefits.

doodle041707Yesterday, the power outage after work was a blessing. I didn’t need to hear all of the news time misery over what happened at Virginia Tech. I know the basics, and certainly don’t feel the need for any in-depth analysis just yet.

Due to the heavy winds and rain, the house was without power from about 2pm to right around 11:30pm. There is something to be said for snuggling up with BHK and the kitties in bed to watch a movie (X-men 3) on the last charge of the laptop. Speaking of last night’s power outage, my hand-powered flashlight came in handy for the first time in about a year. We have more than a few items with juice that we can use as a flashlight, as well. Amongst our light-throwing servitors there are a PSP (see doodle at right), a PDA, two cell phones, an unknown quantity of laptops, a GPS, and an Ipod.

This morning was another story. Since BHK’s folks both went to VT, plus the fact I live in DelMarVa in general has me inundated with the story. It’s nice to see the community pull together and support one another, but I’m just withdrawing from the topic as much as I can. Too much junk information out there on TV, too much noise to signal, too many people hurt for me to process this properly just yet. At work, it has been quiet, not too much mention of things non-work related. I figure that I’ll soak up more information by osmosis rather than pointless conjecture.

rec’d in my email –

How many copycats are out there thinking, “yeah, I could do that, I could be famous.” How much has this wall-to-wall coverage of The Cho Show are you guys going to air? When does the DVD come out? When is the made for TV movie?

By giving Cho his moment in the sun, postmortem, you’re just giving the next wacko more motivation to get famous. By declaring it, even on the day it happened the “Deadliest shooting in U.S. History,” or “Deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history,” and “Deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history,” you’re setting a mark for the next crazy guy with a gun: “Can you break this record crazy people? The score to beat is 32!”

Report the news. I don’t need to know Cho Seung-Hui’s shoe size. By “glamorizing” this insane person, you’re just egging on the next guy. Report that he left a goofy manifesto and some lame videos, but don’t plaster his videos up everywhere for ratings. Don’t worry, we’ll sit through your damn commercials.

Yeah, that sums my feelings up pretty well. The first person who tries to tie Virginia Tech shooting to violent video games, movies or music is a despicable publicity whore. Anyone willing to exploit this tragedy for media face time, or use it to support their agenda to censor media content is a pathetic excuse for a human being.

Today at work, plans were pretty straightforward. Fix a printer problem with oce’. Migrate some machines for the treasury and Sheriff’s Office. Swap out UPS’s on those that are looking a little threadbare after all of our recent power spikes.
