8432- farewell, June. I won’t be missing you.

Friday. Payday. Right before a 4-day weekend. Good thoughts for July… June fairly stunk, with a few nice exceptions. June seems to often be a bad month for me.. I’m glad it’s passed for another year.

Rather rushed this morning, more to follow tonight, or from the bus ride, no doubt.

Moment of Lyric – mp3

All alone in this world am I
Not a care for this world have I
Only you keep my eyes open wide
Yes it’s true
I live for you

Not a thing in this world do I own
Only sadness from all that is grown
In this darkness I wait for the day
Yes it’s true
I live for you

For many years I wait
For many tears I wait

All this time my thoughts return to you
Give my love, that is all I can do
Wait in line till I feel you inside
Yes it’s true
I live for you

For many years I wait
For many tears I wait

All this time my thoughts return to you
Give my love, that is all I can do
Wait in line till I feel you inside
Yes it’s true
I live for you

teddygun

A Japanese company called Sunamiya has developed a gun-shaped party cracker that shoots out a teddy bear. The teddy bear would then parachute down.

Developers hit on the idea after noticing that it had become a trend for people to throw teddy bears into the air instead of bouquets at wedding receptions.

8429 – Thursday again, yes it is.

Got some writing accomplished last night. Basic outline, some bits of dialogue. It’s not coming together in “freeflow” style I usually go for, but building on a planned skeleton seems to be working for me so far. 6 characters is a bit stereotypical so far… protagonist, romantic interest, street contact, police interface, villain and victim. I’ve got the method, but some aspects of the implementation aren’t quite on the beam. It wa skind of hard ot get rolling, but about 15 minutes in, the flow improved.

(Writing to Linda Ronstadt’s unreleased Keeping Out Of Mischief album certainly promotes noir. Got to love a good torch song from a voice like hers. Thank you, internet for obscure, but easy to download, lost vinyl!)

I would really like some of these USB Powered Air conditioned clothes in a Hawaiian print.

8428 – More Links, less thinks.

I’ve been feeling a rather blah mood underneath my basic mostly chipper vibe for a little while now. I’ve got a lot of good things going in my life, but still feel a bit of malaise. I think it’s just a combination of the time of the year, general stresses and the like.

I get cheered up quickly when I think of good people I know…LJ folks, not to mention phone calls or hanging out with Danny really energize me and return my thoughts to an even keel. (Usually… sometimes Danny and I commiserate to a point of being mutually cranky…or at least mutually tired.)

Coworkers are a mixed bunch… GG and TD are cool, but the higher much-a-mucks have been really stressed lately, and that’s contagious. Nobody’s really given me any direct guff, but lots of guff “near me”. I have to remind myself to just let it go, and not feed into that mentality.

I’ve got 7 vacation days left to use before 8/25. Not sure what I’m going to do with that, but I know at least part will be sent going up to Virginia, to relax and enjoy myself. (Staying at the crash pad near Mom and Wilt.) Hopefully, a little sidebar to the Keys could happen, too.

I feel good that I’ve raised enough money (between my junk-food fund, now at about $70, plus the kindly donations of folks who click on my webpage ads at about another $100, and outright paypal donations of about $25) to do the bees option, Trees, and chicks a couple of times over. Unless I find an even better charity, that’ll be where the funds go at the end of this month.

See, I feel less bleh, even just typing about making an improvement, and thinking about good folks in my life. Needless to say, Newt is a fine calming and cheer-bringing medicine, too. Thinking about it, I only lapse to humbug when I forget about all the spiffies.

An unknown object has dropped from the sky in a remote village of Tsurma, Kiyawa local government area of Jigawa State. The object labelled “Adolphus 12” carried the French national flag that was covered with an 8 inch polytene bag attached with electronic gadgets, telephone numbers of France and Benin Republic. Eyewitness account told Vanguard that the strange object dropped in the village around 5.00 pm local time after a slight rainfall, which caused apprehension and tension among inhabitants. The eyewitness account stated that the object which appeared to be remote controlled from an unknown centre attempted to take off again before it was tied down by the villagers who subsequently alerted the Emir of Dutse, Alhaji Muhammadu Nuhu Sanusi. Vanguard reports that the object that was about the size of a 2,000-litre water tank has an inscription that says “whoever finds it should call the numbers attached, this is not dangerous, and it is a scientific experiment.”

The object also has an antenna, four aerial wires, and a transmitter that looks like a satellite transmission mechanism. Vanguard further reports that the sleepy village was to turned to a Mecca by the news of the strange object as crowd estimated at about 10,000 trooped there to catch a glimpse of the object. Following the development, the Police authority in Dutse sent a team of expert from Bomb Disposal Unit to ascertain the true picture of the object. Briefing newsmen on the incident, the Jigawa Police Public Relation Officer, ASP, Ejike Nwakalor, confirmed that preliminary investigations indicate that the object is a safe scientific gadget with no destructive element, but could not say if it was an espionage object.

Very superstitious, writing’s on the wall,
Very superstitious, ladders bout’ to fall,
Thirteen month old baby, broke the lookin’ glass
Seven years of bad luck, the good things in your past.

oo When you believe in things that you don’t understand,
Then you suffer,
Superstition ain’t the way

Very superstitious, wash your face and hands,
Rid me of the problem, do all that you can,
Keep me in a daydream, keep me goin’ strong,
You don’t wanna save me, sad is my song.

When you believe in things that you don’t understand,
Then you suffer,
Superstition ain’t the way, yeh, yeh.

Very superstitious, nothin’ more to say,
Very superstitious, the devil’s on his way,
Thirteen month old baby, broke the lookin’ glass,
Seven years of bad luck, good things in your past

While researching world hunger, I stumbled over this guy. Norman E. Borlaug

“Dr. Norman Borlaug is the first person in history to save a billion human lives. But he must also get credit for saving the wild creatures and diverse plant species on 12 million square miles of global forest that would long since have been plowed down without the high-yield farming he pioneered. The two accomplishments combined make him dramatically unique. I am proud to work with the Center for Global Food Issues, of which he is Chairman Emeritus.”

A billion lives saved.

A *BILLION*.

A *BILLION* lives spared from starvation.

I can’t even properly conceive of that. 1/6th of the planet’s population?

Why had I never heard of him? That’ll teach me not to watch the West Wing or Penn & Teller’s TV show.

I knew it: (the word pants and trousers were disturbing me a great deal on Saturday, at the salvation army.)

In the early 19th century the words “trousers” and “pants” were considered obscene in England. Woman referred to trousers as “inexpressibles” or “a pair of dittoes.” Later in the century the taboo was carried to such lengths that piano legs were covered up because they reminded people of their human legs. In 1836 Charles Dickens wrote the following lines in Oliver Twist:

” ‘ I tossed off the clothes, got safely in bed, drew on a pair of ________’ ”

” ‘ Ladies present, Mr. Giles,’ murmured the tinker.

” ‘ _________ of shoes, Sir,’ said Mr. Giles, laying great emphasis on the word.”

8422 – Sunday morning… after a solid night’s sleep

Woke up on Saturday with a slight pinch in my back… must’ve slept a little funny the night prior… a hot shower and some stretching took care of the bulk of the problem in fairly short order.

Had a lovely day meandering about, looking for proper goodies to put in the apartment, sniffing at teak and rattan-type stuff. Saw a few things that had some potential, and a truly grotesque table that was also a drum made from zebra skin (and legs made from the hooves) which will give the more sensitive folk nightmares for weeks.

As always, we got a lot of good gab-time in, and I always enjoy a day’s worth of social-time.

After doing some legwork, we swung by Tijuana Taxi, and the food was jim-dandy. The place was basically a Mexican version of Crabby Jack’s – with better food. I’ll certainly be back. (I’ve got 2 additional good reasons to swing by there, it’s near both Danny’s house and Tina’s.) Since the refried beans were made with lard, I had the chile-cheese smashed potatoes, and they were tasty, though it took a moment to get used to the idea of mashed potatoes with a south of the border flair. I think I’ll have to get something a little lighter next time, because the veggie Chimichanga was just too much after an appetizer.

When we finished, I took the BCT home… route 2 to the West Terminal, Route 22 to Central, and Route 10 right on home. I ate so much, I was *still* feeling a bit overfed 2 hours later.

The bus ride was nice, too… the rain started to pound down, coming in sheets to the point where I couldn’t see more than 25 feet in any direction. Thankfully, the terminals are well covered against the elements. (most street stops aren’t so blessed.) By the time I got home, the streets were clean, but the skies had fairly dried up, for the final walking-leg home.

Tailing a monkey man in search of healing powers

KOLKATA (Reuters) – Thousands of people are flocking to an impoverished Indian village in eastern West Bengal state to worship a man they believe possesses divine powers because he climbs up trees in seconds, gobbles up bananas and has a “tail.”

Devotees say 27-year-old villager Chandre Oraon is an incarnation of the Hindu monkey god Hanuman — worshipped by millions as a symbol of physical strength, perseverance and devotion.

“He climbs up trees, behaves like a monkey and is a strict vegetarian, but he is no god and his condition is just a congenital defect,” says Bhushan Chakraborty, the local medical officer.

Tucked away in a hamlet in Banarhat, over 400 miles north of Kolkata, the state capital, devotees wait for hours to see or touch Oraon’s 13-inch tail, believing that it has healing powers.

Doctors said the “tail” — made up of some flesh but mostly of dark hair — was simply a rare physical attribute.

“It is a congenital anomaly, but very rarely do we find such cases,” B. Ramana, a Kolkata-based surgeon, told Reuters.

“He climbs up trees, behaves like a monkey and is a strict vegetarian, but he is no god and his condition is just a congenital defect,” says Bhushan Chakraborty, the local medical officer.

8415 – What speak you words that have no meaning?

Danny and I were pretty bushed yesterday, after work.. not in the mood for movies about weather or bigh boats or wacky couples sharing an apartment. Instead, we walked around toys ‘r us, had Thai/Japanese food. (interesting to have veggie rolls as appetizers, and then Pad Thai with tofu for main meal.)

Waitresses were stern, but massively skilled, superb service and swift… smiles flickered to their faces when eye contact was met… only to fade out as they moved on. Danny ventured that they were under cover martial artists, due to the clockwork precision. They were tipped well.

We went back to my place to do a little game of pirates, but were feeling too lazy to roll dice or push 2 inch plastic boats, so we watched an episode of Red Dwarf, Zefrank’s video journal, and about 10 minutes of Land of the lost.
