A scene from The Leopard Man

Chill beneath a cadaverously gray autumn sky, the tiny New Mexico town. That slate moment in the seasons when everything begins to grow dark. The epileptic scratching of fallen leaves hurled along sidewalks. Mad sounds from the hills. Cold. And something else:

A leopard, escaped, is loose in the town. Chill beneath a crawling terror of spotted death in the night, the tiny New Mexico town. That thick red moment in the fears of small people when everything explodes in the black flow of blood. A deep-throated growl from a filthy alley. Cold.

A mother, preoccupied with her cooking, tells her small daughter to go down the street to the market, get a sack of flour to make bread for the father, coming home from work soon. The child shows a moment of fear… the animal they haven’t found yet…

The mother insists, it’s only a few blocks and across the bridge to the market. Put on a shawl and go and get the flour, your father will be home soon. The child goes. Hurrying back up the street, the small sack held close to her, the street empty and filling with darkness, ink presses down the sky, the child looks around, and hurries. A cough in the blackness behind her. A cough, deep in a throat that never formed human sounds.

The child’s eyes widen in panic. She begins to hurry. Her footsteps quicken. The sound of padding behind her. Feet begin to run. Focus on darkness and the sound of rapid movement. The child. The rushing.

The wooden door of the house. The door is locked. The child pinned against the night, with the furred sound of agony rushing toward her on the wind.

Inside, the mother, still kitchened, waiting. The sound of the child outside, panic and bubbles of hysteria in the voice, Mommy open the door the leopard is after me!

The mother’s face assumes the ages-old expression of harassed parenthood. Hands on hips, she turns to the door, you’re always lying, telling fibs, making up stories, how many times have I told you lying will —

Mommy! Open the door!

You’ll stay out there until you learn to stop lying!

Mommy! Mom–

Something gigantic hits the door with a crash. The door bows inward, and a fine spray of flour sifts between the cracks into the room. The mother’s eyes grow huge, she stares at the door. A thick black stream, moving very slowly, seeps under the door.

Annnd.. Scene.

The movie is great. Has one of the best “Trapped in a graveyard” sequences I’ve ever viewed.

spoiler.

two years ago, I was just ending my last RPG gaming groups, an alphabet of television, nice supper at hops, great freaky/creepy movies and net fibs.

one year ago – welcome to Autumn, poll about what you carry with, a haiku war, I’m an otter on the medicine wheel, troll’s so snoopy that she inspires a sign on the door, and a post of the Chupacabra song, missing my dad, wondering about Halloween costumes.

This year, I’m taking Thursday, 10/31 off, through Sunday, 11/3. four day weekend.

The Fort Lauderdale international Film Festival … I’ll indulge in some of that, surely.

Oct 30 – Nov 10 Fort Lauderdale International Film Festival at Regal Las Olas… Just on the other side of that singing fountain. They also have some lovely photos of Las Olas. That’s the beach area I visit.

Ah, superglue. So handy. So useful.

I got a tube, and have been fixing all the little doodads that’ve needed it for the last week.

Toy soldier with removed arm and sword? All better! Freaky guy riding his robot scorpion? Legs are all good now.

Desk drawer with loose knob? Fixed!

Broken book spine? No more!

Very satisfying…and I didn’t glue my fingers together.

Today’s a relaxing day… just doing the little niggling nit-noids that need to get done, but nothing too pesky. I got all my outside stuff done early… paycheck, groceries (got my brownie mix! and a lot of fresh fruit to counter any potential guilt…) They’re building a super-duper uber-Publix right on the other side of the tunnel (I didn’t know it was the only tunnel in all of Florida!) … figures.. Once they change the home delivery plan to something very useable…I wonder what the difference is between tuna for cats and regular tuna is? Do kitties prefer it to be a little stinkier or something, or are there just fewer federal guidelines for feeding non-humans?

I would take advantage of grocery delivery, but I like to get out and shop for goodies, do a little people watching, and maybe the odd impulse buy.

Random Scotto factoid – My Favorite Michael J Fox movie is The Frighteners. I really like how it goes from goofy Ghostbusters to a deep sympathy and pity for the main guy, to “holy crap!”, and back again.

Note- I never liked TV’s “Family ties”… but the sporadic episode or two of “Spin City” that I’ve seen with him in it was pretty good.

Mst3k really lost a lot of oomph when Dr Forrester was totally replaced by Pearl…Just not the same vibe.

Hmm.. there’s an iPod for windows, now. Still a little expensive for a super-walkman, though… three to five bills, depending on storage. That tells me that a variant will appear in about a year for half that or less.

Now… Hubzilla, on the other hand is cute and affordable. 🙂 However, I think I could get a regular hub and gut a ‘zilla toy here for about 1/3 the price, if I wanted to go for cheap.

This made my morning. A Tribute to Ray Harryhausen. Mixed Media makes me smile. Is it wrong for me to be proud that I have a few of the introductory characters in my collection?

Nifty progress in Cancer research.

I’m looking forward to a restful, comfy weekend. This week has been a bit of a grind. I’ve put in for having a long Halloween break, too. The 31st, and 11/1 off.

Hey! Someone made a Newton Screensaver. That’s not my Buddy, though it is an orange tabby.

psychic flower... it can read your mind.. But it won't. It respects your privacy. He's not really an amputee... I just didn't draw his arms and legs. bus driverRed Dog, the pir8 guy! Let me see if I have Riker's Kazaa letter...Riker at work got an email today, regarding his Internet account, Kazaa, and Goldmember… nope, not cc:ed to me yet. I’ll post it tomorrow.

The long and the short of it is that they saw him with Goldmember shared on his computer, and they’re going to press charges for illegal distro of copy written goods. Sent such a scare, that kazaa is verboten at our workplace. Ah well… I’ll still do it from home. I just grab mst3k and cartoons these days, anyhow. Yikes! I still have to burn some CDs, typing of which.

Dream last night of a neighbor coming over, complaining about my reading lamp being to bright, and burning his eyes. I was nice, and apologized, even though I couldn’t see where the light would get out.

Bought a fresh batch of Newt food this evening…and got myself some junk. chocolate-cookie crunch tofutti. yumitty-yum! Strange to see an ingredient “cookies”.

I think I’m ready for a little snack. Nigh nigh, dear journal!

5 venoms I got myself a treat today from Kmart… Five Deadly Venoms, one of the few that I saw in the theatre when I was living in Richmond.

A kung fu DVD (for $3!!) I love the Kmart discount bin… I’m going to treat myself to maybe a dozen more of these. I’d have bought this one for $20.

the DVD is *nothing* special, techwise… a direct video (fair quality) to DVD copy, but for three bucks, you can’t go wrong. but back when I was 8 years old, this theater would have kung-fu Saturdays that I would go to with my brother, father, and Bill Brunot, a good friend of the family. (I think that’s where my tradition of sneaking food into the theatre started too… PB&J, with a thermos of kool-aid, Dad and Bill snuck beer in.) There’d be a double shot of chop-socky… and then we’d all go goof off at Bill’s house, usually playing ping pong or bumper pool. Back in the day… good times. I miss them a lot sometimes. Nostalgia is like that.

I saw Flying guillotine there, too, but I budgeted tightly, and honestly didn’t have $3 extra to pick it up. (I prefer to do dealings in cash.) There were like 10 copies, so I think I’m safe. Next weekend, I’ll grab a nice pile of them. heck, I think there were only 7 or so different ones. there. one of each will do fine for about $20. 🙂

I love having a dvd player in my laptop! watch bad movies, chat, and program in VB all at the same time!

*does the twist*

Doc!

quoted from Oct 16th at ign.filmforce.com

The Terminator himself, “Ahnuld,” recently dished the latest 411 in a Los Angeles Times interview. Schwarzenegger says that he’s currently shooting an action-thriller in Mexico called Collateral Damage, in which he plays a federal officer seeking revenge upon terrorists who murdered his family. Arnie went on to confirm that he will begin work in March on Terminator 3, in which he will battle a female android to the death. After that, he’s hoping to bring the comic-book hero “Doc Savage” to the big screen. He compares the script by Frank Darabont (one of several writers on the project) to Steven Spielberg’s Raiders of the Lost Ark.

Groovy! Make that #6!

in other news.

I went to see Dr. T and the Women (which *really* sounds like a ’70s porno movie to me) Wow. What a tragic, horrible, evil bunch of people. I could only sympathize with one character… the rest were so colossally screwed up in the head that it made me dizzy. But that was the total attraction of the movie! A total social train-wreck, it raised my sense of uncomfortableness (uh, is that a word? well, it is now. ) to great heights. Scary representation of people, women of the south in particular. Amazing shots in the ob/gyn office, especially… pretty true to life, judging on the few times I’ve been there. (Not for myself, sillies.)

home again!

This Entry brought to you in Hypno-vision!

Went to see the ladies’ man… and I found it entertaining. Some unusual cameos, and Billie Dee Williams is still smooth as silk. I want him to be my narrative bartender. The crossdressing part in the preview was nowhere to be seen… and I’m glad that Hillary form fresh prince aged so well.

Now I’m in, and enjoying a good surf. 555-1212.com is pretty neato, the reverse lookups are very functional and quite useful, when combined with the whois server. I can find the home or business address of just about anyone with a website. 🙂 I bet a lot of folks can get stalked that way… so be nice.

Why Bears?

From Ghost dog….

Bears

A solitary animal, adaptable to all climates, terrain, and food. In groups will share food in abundance, and is a formidable adversary despite a lack of predatory instincts. If he or his group is injured or threatened, he will fight and kill with great ferocity, but is generally a peaceful, docile creature. In ancient cultures, bears were considered equals to men.
