9410 – Monday

HAPPY BIRTHDAY, BHK!!

Allison’s B’day! I buttered her nose while she was distracted by playing audiosurf. (Got it for $5 this last weekend.) I was a little disappointed that my mp3 of Christopher Walken reciting Poe’s “The Raven” was so linear.

As a gift / party-favor to all for BHK’s day – A GAZILLION Free to print and play games.

Oh BGG, how I thank the Internets you’re there.

If you’re not into free games, (or even if you are, dear journal) here’s a stop-motion zombie movie called Chainsaw Maid. Best zombie film this year. (from the same people who did Bloody Date )

No Lebanese Taverna Tonight – Falafel time must wait – instead we hit Gallo’s Deli – food is still pretty good. Not as superior as Selby, but only a block or two from the house. BHK opened the remainder for her loot tonight.

I got her an assortment of little trinket-treats – My faves were earring-studs in the style of mexican sugar skulls and a bottlecap pin with a pirate inside saying ARG in letter beads…. but I’m partial to things skully. I need to take a picture of BHK’s loot pile – other items were a lovey charm, a ouija board pin, and a horde of coupons to do / get things, from getting me in a good mood to a movie night with no snarky comments. (2 nights, if neither are Jane Austen-related).

120 years ago – A plant grows in Mexteca, Mexico, which the natives call the “herb of prophecy.” A dose of it produces sleep similar in all respects to the hypnotic state. The subject answers with closed eyes all questions that are put to him, and is completely insensible. The pathologic state brings with it a kind of prophetic gift and doublesight. Furthermore he loses his will and is completely under the control of another. On returning to himself he remembers nothing of what he has done. –Excelsior Cottager, August 25, 1888.

So.. talk like a pirate day again? Bleh. How about my suggestion from last year? Talk like a Ninja day and for everyone to not say *anything* – especially meme related for a day. (Myself included.)

LIMA (AFP) – Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery crash to Earth in their area, regional authorities said Monday.

Around midday Saturday, villagers were startled by an explosion and a fireball that many were convinced was an airplane crashing near their remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia.

Residents complained of headaches and vomiting brought on by a “strange odor,” local health department official Jorge Lopez told Peruvian radio RPP.

Seven policemen who went to check on the reports also became ill and had to be given oxygen before being hospitalized, Lopez said.

Rescue teams and experts were dispatched to the scene, where the meteorite left a 100-foot-wide (30-meter-wide) and 20-foot-deep (six-meter-deep) crater, said local official Marco Limache.

“Boiling water started coming out of the crater and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby. Residents are very concerned,” he said.

Some gruesome news:

CARACAS (Reuters) – A Venezuelan man who had been declared dead woke up in the morgue in excruciating pain after medical examiners began their autopsy.

Carlos Camejo, 33, was declared dead after a highway accident and taken to the morgue, where examiners began an autopsy only to realize something was amiss when he started bleeding. They quickly sought to stitch up the incision on his face.

“I woke up because the pain was unbearable,” Camejo said, according to a report on Friday in leading local newspaper El Universal.

His grieving wife turned up at the morgue to identify her husband’s body only to find him moved into a corridor — and alive.

Reuters could not immediately reach hospital officials to confirm the events. But Camejo showed the newspaper his facial scar and a document ordering the autopsy.

The forensic expert called to examine the willing victim of German cannibal Armin Meiwes has written a book about his most bizarre case. He recalls his horror at seeing the four-and-a-half-hour video Meiwes made of the killing and disembowelment.

Forensic expert Manfred Risse will never forget the day he was called to examine the contents of Armin Meiwes’ freezer. The German cannibal (more…) had killed a man who had begged to be devoured, chopped him up into meal-sized portions, and eaten about 20 kilos (44 pounds) of him.

The 2002 killing and subsequent trials made global headlines, and Meiwes is assured a prominent place in the dark annals of murderous perversion. Risse, 53, deputy head of the forensic institute in the central German city of Giessen, has just written a book about the case and has spoken about it for the first time in an interview with Focus magazine.

About examining a severed foot, Risse writes: “Meiwes had placed it on a plate, stuck a knife and fork in it, added sauce, took a picture of it and posted it on the Internet.” Risse also had to scrutinize around 30 packets of flesh, some of them labelled. “One read ‘Neck Filet, 10/03/01,’ and other labels reminded me of supermarket labels, for example ‘Minced Meat With Sauce.'”

Risse recalls the horror he felt when he watched the four-and-a-half hour video Meiwes made of the killing and subsequent butchering.

“I got sweaty hands for the first time in my career; shivers ran down my spine” said Risse. “I’ve been doing this job for 20 years, have carried out 5,000 autopsies and seen more than 30,000 corpses. In terms of nauseating and repugnant sights, the cannibal film burst the boundaries of what I had seen to that date.”

Meiwes, a computer repair man, had placed advertisements on the Internet seeking men who were willing to be “slaughtered.” Bernd Brandes, a 43-year-old computer engineer from Berlin, responded, and the killing took place in Meiwes’ rambling half-timbered house in the town of Rotenburg.

The infamous video was shown in court, but the media and public weren’t allowed to see it. One scene shows Brandes, already suffering from severe loss of blood after having his penis severed at his own insistence, saying: “If I’m still alive tomorrow morning, we’ll eat my balls.”

“It was a horrific scene,” recalls Risse. “I couldn’t believe that a man so seriously hurt could say a thing like that. It sounded like a bad comedy. But it was real.”

The video also shows Meiwes hanging up the body from a meat hook and cutting it up. “It was evident that Meiwes had no anatomical knowledge whatsoever. He couldn’t distinguish between the colon and the small intestine, didn’t know where the liver was and was astonished at the color of the meat. He said: ‘I thought it would be lighter. One learns from experience.'”

Risse’s book “Last Supper of the Murderers,” which can only be sold to adults, goes on sale in Germany on Sept. 20. He said he wrote it to show the public what really happened. “There’s always been cannibalism,” Risse said. “But the fact that someone wanted to have themselves be killed, slaughtered and devoured, is unique in the world.”

Meiwes had his sentence increased from eight and a half years to life in a 2006 retrial (more…) after the prosecution appealed against the initial verdict for being too lenient.

8968 – sunday funday!

Still too hot to do much of anything out and about in the Crisco soup-like atmosphere, so we opted to take in lunch at the Sbarro’s in the Annapolis Mall and then hit a movie. Who knows why we woke up at 7:30 on a Sunday, but it gave us a solid head start.

We finally caught the Simpsons Movie on the big screen… I was surprised – it was a lot better than I was expecting… pretty solid TV episode from back when it was funny. We only saw 3 bits that would make it warrant a PG-13 rating – an instance of nudity, a curse word (or two) and some drinking / drug use. I could see them showing all of it after 10pm on network tv unedited, or without those three instances any time at all.

On the way home, we noticed that ATW has changed the sign again, as the search for “the man” continues. (atw is now a tag just for my ease of searching the story thread and pictures, now.)

BHK Birthday Part II: Electric boogaloo!
allisonbdaycake

Party at Tina’s place… Mexican food! Both Meat and veggie protein varieties – Tina’s not a big carnivore, either. Matt (her new boy) seems like a nice enough fellow and I hope they have maximum fun / minimum glum together. He’s certainly more social and generally conversational than DR or W. Dessert was yellow birthday cake with chocolate icing, compared favorably to yesterday’s lemon cake with lemon icing. Added bonus, BHK’s mom didn’t absent-mindedly start slurping the frosting off of the removed candles like last night, rather than giving them to the b’day girl to taste.

Aside from Tina and Matt, Adam, Jimmy, Louise, Chris and Larry all made it to celebrate. We fit pretty comfortably at Tina’s townhouse… I wasn’t sure if we’d all be able to manage, but it worked out quite well.

BHK’s Loot received:

from Louise : Necklace and bracelet of multi-colored pearls.
from Tina : A pair of Peridot Earrings / Hello Kitty purse (which looks like ms. kitty is making a gesture I’m sure wasn’t intentional)
from Larry & Chris – Red Coral necklace and Earrings / and some lovely crockery
from Danny – A swell looking green-stoned ring in gold. (and he got Tina some yellow-stoned earrings, too!)
from my Mom and Wilt – Turquoise and silver necklace, Halloween Snow globe, a little cornucopia and a really lovely card.
from me – a lot of knickknacks – Grease & Grease 2, a pair of pink pseudo-crocks, some stripy socks that mismatch/match, a pink headband with little jolly rogers, bath scrubbie, black cat bowl, a green wire basket, some fuzzy slippers and a gift cert to scalped.

I’m the only person that didn’t get her any jewelry… she told me specifically *not* to get her any. Now, I understand why.

May’ve recruited Adam and Jimmy into a parlor game night. Who knows, maybe they’ll lure Kendall and Amanda into it, too, and we’ll have a big night of it sometime!

I don’t know if Matt is into parlor games… I do know he digs the Redskins and is willing to put up with chick flicks. come to think of it, I don’t know for sure if Tina is interested in boardgames or not… I suspect that she, like the in-laws aren’t really into abstract games. Louise is a good candidate, but is harder to reel in to a date or time than the teens. The last time we saw her was her birthday, about 6 weeks ago.

Poor Danny has students in his classes now – he’s back to running the Sci-fi club, and is incorporating Pirates into the after school program. I should send him a bucket of heroclix or mage knight commons/doubles as a donation. He really liked the Superhero stamps and Lord of the Rings Risk game we shot off to him a little while back.

We had our pirate “battle royale” 3-way 100 points each pirate fleet combat… BHK was quite menacing with two giant crabs helping her ships, but Danny took the game in the end via gold. I got really tired the last hour of the game – the start delayed by abut 2ish hours due to our wonderfully “grand central station” aspect of the house… it is always preferable to visit with family and friends than to hunker down and play.

Tonights plans include eating home made mac & cheese, playing Hunter & Gatherers, Witch Trial and then watching Shaolin Soccer.

I really like having Danny over, but I am a bit fatigued by the work/play/sleep/repeat method. I look forward to just vegging out a little bit. After Danny launches, Misti and the gang are coming, and then Amy. July will be is a busy month.

Got good news regarding the condo issue – via some counter-commandoes

Yesterday I spoke with Harold Hyman, chief of compliance with DBPR here. He confirmed the good news that, as I was told last week, they had basically found everything dealing with the election scam in our favor and the decision was confirmed by his boss in Tallahassee. The report is being prepared and we should get it in a few days. He also added however that, although they are firm in their decision, the board can and probably will appeal. This will delay things by maybe a few weeks. Knowing Horst, Phoenix and Tucker & Tighe, an appeal (and maybe other tricks) would seem inevitable. Well, we will rid ourselves of them this summer no matter what they do!

We’ll see. I am glad that the condo regime is getting a bit of a shakeup.

via Beaucoupkev Life-sized Gigantor memorial to be erected

Kobe, Japan will be the home of a life-sized Gigantor statue.

The 18 meter high, 70 ton Ironman-28 will carry the price tag of 135 million yen. The project is expected to be completed in the spring of 2008.

Debuting in 1958, Tetsujin 28-gō was the first “giant robot” series, which became a staple in Japanese pop culture.

The statue will serve as a double memorial, marking both the birthplace of creator Mitsuteru Yokoyama, who passed away in 2004 in an apartment fire, as well as celebrate the revitilization of the area, which was devastated in the 1995 Kobe earthquake. GeotargetVisitor Map

8563 – What *is* the melting point of a gorilla’s head?

Yarrr! It be Talk like a pirate day and Adam West’s 78th B’day!

First Columbo movie was fun…the M.O. of letting the bad guy be lulled into a false sense of security by a bumbler is a solid one. The writing has held up, and the acting is a lot better than other shows of the period. Nice use of Double Indemnity on TV as a story within a story.

Wow… the menstrualhut has over 2250 members now. When I first started it, I had no idea it’d still be growing and active five years later, pretty much on its own. I’m going to have to swing by the Museum of Menstruation when I’m in Maryland. His site is a goodly part of why the hut got rolling in the first place.

Washington D.C. (AHN) – A heap of debris taken from quarry trash in Mexico has yielded a stone block inscribed with what researchers believe is the oldest writing ever found in the New World. Researchers say the serpentine block dates back almost 3,000 years and was created by people from Olmec civilization.

Installed new Nvidia drivers (9/2/05 ones) and my system is looking *great*. Second life at a higher resolution and less crash issues. I’m going to reinstall farcry, and see how that does, next.

The higher res desktop frees a lot of real estate up, too. I’m impressed.. it’s like I’ve got a new system. 1280 x 1024 x 2 monitors (so it’s actually 1280 x 2048, if you want to get technical) it makes it pretty hard to revert to the 1024 x 768 single screen at work.

Big boss in Maryland today, opening the state with a press conference… If things were different with cej, I’d probably be going along as well. Oh well, it was a good run, for the most part.

Avast! It be Talk like a pirate day! Well, shave me belly with a rusty razor! I tell ya true!

Ye scurvy swabs! Batten down your poop-decks!

Happy 77th B-day, Adam West!

My first direct impact with gas prices. I took a taxi just up the street to do laundry (my load being too large to frog-march), and to prices have gone up considerably since my last use… before, the haul was $2.50 for the entire trip, but with the new pricing, it cost $3.70. The new cost is $2.50 just to get into the vehicle, and the first 1/6 mile. $.40 each additional 1/6 mile after that.

Time for me to price out a new wheel-cart. Heaven help anyone that actually has to go a considerable distance, like the airport or the like.

I was reflecting on times that were less prosperous for me. When at my worst, I had no place to live, and couldn’t afford to eat my fill, even at taco bell. If it wasn’t for food stamps for that month, I probably would’ve had to steal to survive.

That brought to mind all of these false charities, designed to take money meant to feed children and line the pockets of someone taking advantage of the disaster and the kinder natures of the human heart.

If I ever meet someone driving a Cadillac fueled by children he killed, I will use my imagination to its fullest extent to make that person suffer like no other. I have a very good imagination. Those thoughts fanned my more angry side for a bit, making me brew methods of pain on all levels against another person, in all four rooms of his house ( A physical, a mental, an emotional and a spiritual.) That upset me a bit, because I like to consider myself a kind and merciful person.

I have no kind or merciful thoughts for someone who hurts children for personal gain. I don’t feel forgiveness in my heart for them… I just want to hurt them in every way possible, and to make an example for anyone else who might think to do such stuff.

Not a terribly Christian attitude, and that saddens me on another level. My anger outweighs my sadness, however.

My teeth feel sharp against my tongue. The funny thing is that I feel pretty good in most other respects. more friendly-folk recently, a bit of an ease in workplace issues (just a bit).

Just found some folks speaking about me in a kind way during a random google update… how nice!

had a good time at qdot’s with uber and the gang, but I logged out a bit early, to prep for mondays’ hubbub.. prep the office for possible storm issues.
