Back to work, MLK day 0121 Or R.E.LEE day for folks too racist to even take a day off to say thanks to a black guy. (Well, Virginia’s state Motto is what John Wilkes Booth shouted in the theater.)

BHK and Bug lifted me into work this morning… I said my goodbyes, as he was back in VA by the time I made it home. We had a nice time – lots of stuff to do, and good goofing off periods.

MRI came back, and I have a herniated disk – S1 level, pressing to the left {pic via gray’s anatomy} – (S1 nerve impingement from a herniated disc may cause loss of the ankle reflex and/or weakness in ankle push off (e.g. patients cannot do toe rises). Numbness and pain can radiate down to the sole or outside of the foot.

I’d like this to mean that I can get repairs done to a previously thought dead area. I suspect that I may have to have surgery down the line – Still early to tell.

To counter flying_blind’s wtf flickr moment – I don’t know how old the news is, but I just learned that the library of congress has a flickr account. Cool, neat stuff like this made me add ’em.

I’ve had music by TMBG in my head all week… I Palendrome I and Birdhouse especially. Sakes, but Jay Leno has gotten gray.

KFC dinner and an omelet at the in-laws tonight… BHK made it there about 10 minutes after I arrived. Nice time, gabbing with family about this and that – got to talk to Em on the phone a bit, too! Caught Danny on Skype, too… he was watching the debate feed on CNN. Me, I’m not caring much for any of the current batch of politicos, but it looks like he’s going to vote for Hillary, based on her platform.

Pancake and scrambled eggs brunch at Larry & Chris’s, checked out L’s trains upstairs, and rooted around BHK’s old bedroom and returned with salvage of wacky packages, headphones and a weight ball. Not to mention BHK’s 14-wheeled skateboard. I would love to try it if I didn’t fear breaking the rest of my spine.

Retired downstairs to view the last 85% of George of the Jungle.

Too dang cold outside for playing, so back to our place – fooled around with pirates, star-wars hero-type clix, and yet more wii.

Ultimate Alliance and Lego Star Wars ruled the evening.

BHK ordered us all some pizza, and then baked cookies…. nom nom nom. Did we give Bugah any veggies this weekend, aside from products containing wheat?

Watched Funny Farm & Trial of the Incredible Hulk – Bugah may’ve been a little frightened by the needle scene. I was pleasantly surprised that he wasn’t bored by the 80’s sensibilities and lack of special effects.

Hit the sack at 10:30… it’s a school night for me!

Picked up Marvel Ultimate Alliance for m’self  – $18 used!

Went to see National Treasure 2 again… bugah and bhk dug it, I thought it was ok, but not fantastic. I thought it was ok, but it really didn’t hold together very well… the end was loose and free to say the least. It was a fun ride, and I didn’t fall asleep like I dad last time.

Dinner at Cheeburger Cheeburger – Bug ate the 1/2 lb’r and is on the wall now.

Came home and played some family fluxx and then surprise hit polarity. (We may have to get it for him next present-time – we got him family fluxx as part of his stocking this year) Reminds me that I’m woefully behind on sending Eryx his goodies.

Swift cleanup – mostly BHK’s doing. She’s a member of the reverse-hurricane school of speed-tidiness.

Watched psych and held my poor, sore jaw.

Straightened the office a bit, mostly clearing my desk, dealing with paperwork and holding my jaw.

Picked up Bugah in the early evening (~7:30ish)

Went to Bert’s diner w/in-laws – Milkshake was soothing and delicious.

Got Bugah back to our place, and played video games until the wee hours. Preferred titles were Guitar Hero 3 and Transformers (brought with him), but we also got some other bits in here and there.

AM- MRI done… got films, but no record on CD/DVD… I’ll have to scan ’em before I bring them to the doc.

midday – Snow! big, fat flakes. Almost to stormy to go to my mouth appointment.. but not quite. He almost shut down, but things eased up enough. We were running a little early, so we got a pizza hut pit stop… more games of hangman, tater tots and stuffed crust pizza… no choking this time, but we were regaled about our server’s critter collection at home. 2 dogs, 4 cats, birds, fish, and more living outdoors. (and a couple of kiddies, too!) She had a few dental horror stories to get me warmed up for my meeting with the drill and bone saw.

PM – work on my mouth… pain was significant, but not nearly as much as the front work. I’m not going to work tomorrow – doc advised against it. I have another late night appointment on the 28th, but that one should be a walk in the park, comparatively.

Got home, and was OK, save for a swollen mouth and the inability to talk. ATW man still in the same post-christmas hunch position.

Watched some more remainders from the phych-a-thon on the tivo from new year’s day. BHK was very helpful and supportive across the board… I’m lucky to have her in my life!

Dreamt of the boardwalk coming to life like a Japanese Umbrella Monster. Why? Now I wonder how many 100-year old things are in the house. I’m guessing not much, save for a few books and coins.

BHK made a tasty pseudo-chicken / broccoli / alfredo noodle dish… I scarfed down two full bowls of the stuff… and they were not little bowls. The in-laws invited us to chinese food, but I think that I came out way ahead with what I got.

Beware the ides of January! Oh, how it snowed today! It went for a brief period, stopped, and then came back, all crazy-like.

I heard that it wasn’t going to stick, but it was pretty white out there for a little bit. If it had done its drop after dark, I’d wager there’d have been less sublimation.

Veggie Meatloaf for dinner tonight… nom nom nom.

I’m glad that BHK doesn’t mind my meat-free ways! Larry opted for a fried chicken tv dinner, but Chris was game. I have enough to bring a goodly does for lunch tomorrow, too – with plenty of mixed veggies and peas on the side.

VIENNA, Austria – A chimpanzee cannot be declared a person, Austria’s Supreme Court has ruled, activists said Tuesday.

An animal rights group had sought to have the chimp, Matthew Hiasl Pan, declared a person in hopes of gaining guardianship of the animal.

The shelter where Matthew has lived for 25 years is going bankrupt, threatening to leave him homeless. Donors have offered to help support him, but under Austrian law, only a person can receive personal gifts.

The Vienna-based Association Against Animal Factories sought to have him declared a person and petitioned to be appointed Matthew’s trustee.

But the high court upheld a September ruling by a judge in the town of Wiener Neustadt rejecting the petition, the group said Tuesday.

The rights group said it would take the case to the European Court of Human Rights.

Matthew and another chimp at the shelter, Rosi, were captured as babies in Sierra Leone in 1982 and smuggled to Austria for use in pharmaceutical experiments. Customs officers intercepted the shipment and turned the chimps over to the shelter.

Organizers said they may set up a foundation to collect donations for Matthew, whose life expectancy in captivity is about 60 years.

But they argue that only personhood will ensure that he isn’t sold outside Austria.

We took it easy today, as per our usual Sunday… BHK and I woke and puttered a bit, at at The Frying Pan before heading to Aardvark’s to use the gift certificate we got from the Newsies. We picked up family fluxx, my comics and a few deck boxes for our card games – with the bonus stuff for Zombie and regular fluxx, they’ve rather outgrown the cardboard boxes they came in. I was pleasantly surprised to see a nice display of looney labs stuff there – werewolf and and assortment of Fluxx decks is a sign of good fun.

If all goes according to plan, Bugah will be staying with us next weekend – I’ll be recovering from the dentist, but playing wii and just generally goofing around should be a great time for us all. Maybe we can convert him to playing fluxx, too.

In other gaming news – Half-life 2 progressing in a fun way, slowly – about 10 min of game play each time… playing on the airboat right now. Just made it to the red barn. Total Playing time: 4 hrs past 2 weeks (all pc games, including peggle, portal, team fortress 2, counterstrike, hl2, and so on) I’m just not hardcore anymore… if I ever was. Too much fun stuff to do in meat-space – video gaming is usually what I do while I wait for BHK to get ready to go out.

We were planning on heading over get groceries and then to the in-laws to set up some trains, but we grew too fatigued, and just headed home to watch our backlog of psych episodes and began the business of packing up Christmas decor for another 11 months.

I don’t even remember what I had for supper… Oh, wait, got it. Cheese crackers. I skipped the leftover spaghetti – will lunch that tomorrow.

Variant route to work this morning – left a little late, got off at fort trotten, and took r2 in… got to work by 8:15, well before my preferred deadline of 8:30.

Came home, had subway subs and watched The Ex, and the finaled of Spidey 3. Spidey wasn’t as bad as  I’d heard, the third time around.. the Ex was pretty formula, and didn’t do a lot for me, but it was nice getting together with family and hanging out.

1. Where do you like to walk?

Anywhere! I like people-watching, architecture and nature-watching.. I prefer a reasonably hazard-free surface in a comfy climate. The woods, cityscape and boardwalk are all great.

2. What does your hair look like?

Currently cut short, brown, with bits of red, gray, black and blonde tossed in for good measure. Thinning some on top, more gray being tossed in daily – plentiful enough on arms, legs and etc.

3. What are you jealous of?

I’m not a very jealous person these days.

4. What kind of promises do you make?

The kind I plan on keeping… I rarely promise anything.

5. What makes you stare?

When my mind drifts, I tend to lock onto a location in space and stare at it… I’m prone to gaze deeply at anything that would attract a magpie or a monkey. Shiny stuff, moving trees in the wind, an unusual color amongst the grays.

Chris played hooky today, so I got a later ride in to work with BHK… an extra span of sleep does a world of good.

Work – solid. lots of testing, meetings planned.

After work, BHK picked me up, and we went to go see the 7pm showing of Juno at Annapolis.

There was no 7pm showing at Annapolis, despite what yahoo movies says.

So, we got tickets for the 8:20 show, did a little clothes shopping for BHK (got a new top and hat), then went to dinner at red robin (I got teriyaki pinapple veggie burger – bhk got the same with critter burger.) Bottomless steak fries are good, but only served up in tiny portions at a time.

Wandered around the hiking trail shop – looked at kayaks and bikes. Met a friendly salesman, very knowledgeable, and a know-it-all one-upsman. Steve will be who we buy from, should we come back, not the KIA.

I’m looking forward to warmer weather and heading out on the water.

Saw Juno – It was quite good, despite the overwritten “super-hip/ironic” dialogue in the first part of the movie. Nice range of characters… some I liked, some I didn’t.

Cool little easter eggs in I am Legend. Sadly, I’m boycotting it now, (plus BHK doesn’t want to see it either)… Will Smith’s a Scientologist?

Ah! The Weekend at last. Why a 3-day span feels longer than some 5-day ones, I do not know.

Just heading out to dinner and a movie with BHK – Juno is on the agenda, not sure about dinner yet. Most likely Cheeburger2… but California Tortilla, Johnny Rockets and Potbelly are also in the running. I could go for just about anything – looking forward to having a nice slow weekend. In-laws are going out of town, so we’ll be peeking in on Miss Tigger. Maybe I’ll get a little Wii or Portal time in, and I wouldn’t mind doing some exploring with BHK to points outside of our walls, either.

This animated music video was created by 64 Communications students from Concordia University in Montreal as part of the Open-Source Cinema project. The students “rotoscoped 1-3 seconds of video each, over a period of three weeks. (Most of them had never used Flash before.)” The results are fantastic – with a variety of engaging styles in the final product.

They say: “We were inspired by Bob Sabiston’s digital rotoscoping (as seen in Snack and Drink, Waking Life, A Scanner Darkly), and our readings and class discussions about copyright and creativity. (Course textbook: Christine Harold’s OurSpace: Resisting the Corporate Control of Culture.)”

I’m pretty fond of pentagons and 5-sided stars, but I’d have to say the simplicity of a circle is my favorite.

Temperatures are expected to remain well below freezing again overnight, which can mean danger for the District’s homeless population. The city has put out a reminder to call their Hypothermia Shelter Hotline should you spot anyone trying to sleep outside when it’s this cold.

By calling 1-800-535-7252, the Shelter Hotline can provide transportation to emergency shelters and distribute items such as blankets, gloves and jackets.

If you live outside the District, Express has compiled a list of numbers to call in Montgomery County, Prince George’s County, Arlington County, Fairfax County and Alexandria.

“A DARPA-funded research project at UCLA has wrapped up a set of animal trials testing the effects of inhalation of the brain chemical orexin A, a deficiency of which is a characteristic of narcolepsy. Monkeys were deprived of sleep, and then given a shot of the compound. ‘The study … found orexin A not only restored monkeys’ cognitive abilities but made their brains look “awake” in PET scans. Siegel said that orexin A is unique in that it only had an impact on sleepy monkeys, not alert ones, and that it is ‘specific in reversing the effects of sleepiness’ without other impacts on the brain.’ Researchers seem cautious to bill the treatment as a replacement for sleep, as it is not clear that adjusting brain chemistry could have the same physical benefits of real sleep in the long run. The drug is aimed at replacing amphetamines used by drowsy long-haul military pilots, but there would no doubt be large demand for such a remedy thanks to its apparent lack of side-effects.”

Yikes. Low hit 17 degrees Fahrenheit after the sun went down – read as “as I was waiting for the bus.”

I’m well-armed against the cold with my super warm jacket and scarf… but tomorrow, I’m bringing gloves, so I don’t have to stuff my paws into my jacket pockets for comfort.

Last night’s supper of left over shepherd’s pie, mac & cheese and veggies was wonderful… but tonight’s falafel is going to be even better. I can smell it cooking right now, and I’ve got some serious hungries going on.

I can’t say it enough… BHK is an awesome cook. Heck, she’s awesome, period.

I wonder if anyone I know has caught I am Legend yet? We want to see it, but BHK is afraid that the dog will die in a bad way. From the preview, it looks like it probably does – that means I’ll end up watching it on the PSP on the way to work. I get mushy about animals, too.

After reviewing more than a few elements of the OS, I am in agreement with

“Microsoft has extended the life of Windows XP because Vista has simply not shown any life in the market. We have to begin to ask ourselves if we are really looking at Windows Me/2007, destined to be a disdained flop. By all estimates the number of Vista installations hovers around the number of Macs in use.”

That’s a pretty sad market share… no offense to mac folks.

Getting ready for dinner.

Didn’t eat too well today… a lot of water (uncalculable by me right now.)

a 20oz Nestea, a 32 oz gatorade and some honey-roasted peanuts.

I’m getting ready to have a real meal, Some pseudo chciken form moringstar farms in drummette format spicy! with some chinese mustard and maybe catsup.

Chatting with buddy robb about a band, cat power… very cool
