Quick Isidore Update

Isidore has strengthened to become a Category 3 storm, with maximum winds of 115 mph. Therefore, it’s now classified as a “major” hurricane. Intensification should continue…. the most recent NHC guidance actually brings max winds to 145 mph in 72 hours.

Right now, the storm is pretty much halfway between the western tip of Cuba and the eastern tip of the Yucatan, drifting westward. That motion should continue over the next 48 hours, meaning it’ll be a close call for the northern Yucatan Peninsula. After that, it looks as if the storm should begin to take a more northwesterly track. Most of the models have the storm moving northward in the long-term in response to a short wave trough now approaching the Pacific Northwest…we’ll have to see how that plays out, as it’ll probably determine whether or not Isidore ever threatens the Gulf Coast.

No rain here… blue skies, few clouds. Florida’s out of the woods, and I’m wondering how good the surfing on the gulf coast is going to be… my brother and Dave are heading out there tomorrow AM to take advantage of the swells.

Speaking of glue… this project looks really nifty.. marble-magnets.

Good gosh…is anything nicer than laying back and snuggling with a loved one? Newt’s a little cuddle-bug. Later dear journal… Huggo-time.

Looks like Tropical Storm Isidore is going to get us wet, but not blown. Still pretty variable… Rainfall estimates ranged from 3 to 25 inches. Feet of rain! I’m glad that I live someplace with good drainage! (We’ve already lowered the canals to be extra ready.) We’re already 10 inches above normal this year.

Found a new nearby hobby store… maybe I can get some custom terrain there at a reasonable cost. They’re open on Sundays! Hoody-hoo!

I put a bunch of my old magic cards up on mkrealms’ neutral grounds for trade… maybe I’ll find a MtG monkey that will give me toys (or even spending money) for my cardboard!

Sometimes I think that Newt’s Amber eyes are turning just the littlest bit green…but it might just be a trick of the light.

Speed of light broken with basic lab kit. I’m not as interested in the applications of this so much (since, as the article says, it doesn’t mean we’ll have warp drives or time machines anytime soon) as the low cost & ease of doing it. It’s like Edison & Tesla!

Carpe Vultus – Man is driving car. Man has seizure. Man crashes car into Woman’s car. Woman sues – not for the damage done to her car (one would assume insurance covers that), but because she was freaked out by the bizarre faces Man Having Seizure was making. Woman wins, Man has to pay £3,500 in compensation. Ugh… well, at least it’s not in the USA this time…we can point fingers at other legal systems for stupid lawsuits too.

I’m glad I have my “Unbreakable” costume to wear… it’s green, but doesn’t say Security on the back. No rain here yet… but I can smell it.

Ahh… long weekend ahead, all my chores are done, and a thunderstorm outside. Looks like I lost power while out to laundry…several thooming bolts from the blue went off a few hours ago, and my VCR’s LEDs are blinking. I probably should get a small ups for the TV and its accessories.

Newt welcomed me home with a loud hello-mer…. I wonder if the thunder spooked him? Quite affectionate right now, so I’m off to lounge and snuggle.

Oh! My brother the entrepreneur decided to use the packing for my computer desk into a nicely lettered sign – parking $5, all day… honk twice. Smart kid… making use of the nearby art festival and his lack of a car to turn a buck.

Raining hard outside, lots of thunder and lightning.

burning more champa, and wrapped in a cocoon of a recently out of the dryer coverlet, underneath which is a Scotto wearing an also freshly dried gi from my old Tai Chi/Tai Qwon Do uniform. There’s a purring kitty resting on my feet, and I’m chugging Gatorade, now that I’ve had my Theraflu.

Comfortable as possible, given the situation. 🙂

raindrops tapping on the window

I’m sitting here writing perl code and looking out of the window. The whole sky is this dull, uniform grey, it’s raining, and I’m thinking “wow. Rain is bizarre. Seriously! It’s stuff falling from the sky. If it were anything else except for water falling, there’d be mass panic. I mean, to get up into the sky, you need a big honking plane or a helicopter or something. It takes effort. It took humanity a few thousand years to get from ‘ug, sky big’ to balloons, and then another few centuries to planes. It takes work to get up there. Anything in the sky is serious stuff.

Apart from a lot of water, which we accept with complete equanimity.”

Now this wet, thick air is moving in over the city… enveloping the entire town in a wet, thick embrace, and mist is condensing on the outside of my window, since it’s maybe 10 degrees cooler inside than out. It’s a day which makes me pine for bed, the comfort of my love’s arms, soft talk and easy sleep.

Side note. When I was 13, my age *was* my shoe size.

Tornado warning here until 3! Grey skies, whipping winds, heavy rain.. oh nap time, wherefore art thou?

{update – the warning has passed.}

I’m home, and the AC is dead, Newton is here and lovey. (Keeping comfy on top of the porcelain potty-tank lid my boy’s a smartie. :))

Pretty warm in here, but not too bad, baby 10 degrees hotter than I like it. I’m glad it’s not late July, and that it is raining…still, no hot food for me tonight… iced tea, orange juice and a big bowl of cold cereal. 🙂

I’m going to take a cool shower after eating, and then catch up on my reading. Maybe I’ll turn on the cam, too, so folks can watc hme and Newt wilt in the heat. 😉

well, it’s raining, and my ride is about 10 minutes away, to whisk me home. 🙂

I’m incredibly antsy today, maybe I’ll transcribe some of my writing tests to the journal… I’ll see what this evening brings.

I feel poorly. I can’t wait to get home to (hopefully) a fixed ac and a lovey newton…. I’m still a bit anxious about my sweetheart, too.

I worry about my loves. I want them to be happy, healthy and comfortable.

Ugh.

Hot hot hot.

I woke up early this morning after a fitful sleep, and thought that I had a fever…woke up in a sweat. It turnes out that the more reasonable explanation is that I’ve been worried about my sweetheart feeling ok, and my air conditioner died sometime last night/early this morning.

I called the landlord, and have cranked all the fans in the house to full. Newton will be fine, since it’s a little cooler, but it’s still a bit warm for me to be puttering around there. So, I sent some anniversary trinkets of happiness to my beloved… (should be there by 3pm tomorrow… officially one year ago tomorrow we will have met.)

I’m now at work, in the netroom surfing, and waiting for my sweetie to pop online.

thanks, Jason, for pointing phoons out to me!

Time to just stop for a moment. Turn off the TV, turn off the radio, fold up the newspaper.

Today is the first truly splendid weather of the new season. I mean, it is fantastic. Standing in front of an open window with no shirt on kind of weather. Big deep breaths of cool air, close your eyes and sigh kind of weather. Summer is over. I hope wherever you are, you manage to get some of this breeze.

Phoons put a smile on my face this morning. Just a bunch of people posing for pictures as though caught in mid-sprint. This Father Serra one is a favorite.

If I was still active in any Champions or superheroic games, I’d have to make a character called the Phoon. it’s just a good word.

(that and now I want to drink mum tea, with my sweetie, phooning.)

I finished Stephen King’s On Writing. I need some time to think about what I’m going to say about it, and when I get there I suspect I’m going to have a lot to say. I’m sure will be interested, but who knows who else will be.

severe weather alert from the national weather service

flood watch for south florida continues through tonight…
widespread rain…some locally heavy…there is a potential for more rainfall over the area today. tropical depression number 8 continues to drift very slowly west over the gulf of mexico just west of south florida. this system is expected to continue this slow movement today…therefore remaining very close to the area. combined with ample deep atmospheric moisture, low level convergence due to the circulation around this system, and daytime heating…will lead to widespread but locally heavy rainfall over south florida again today. all areas of south florida will get rain with an average of 1 to 2 inches of rain possible in some areas. locally higher rainfall amounts are possible…as any thunderstorms may drop heavy amounts of rain in a short period of time. the greatest rainfall amounts are expected over the east coast and eastern interior sections with heavy downpours, street flooding will be possible as well as in poor drainage areas and low lying areas. if the water threatens properties in some of these areas…flood warnings might then become necessary. therefore…a flood watch continues in effect for all of south florida through tonight. a flood watch means that the conditions are favorable for very heavy rain that can lead to the flooding of low lying and flood prone areas. this could lead to property damage and residents should take precautions to protect their property. motorists should avoid driving across flooded roadways to avoid damage to their vehicles. never drive across flowing water of an unknown depth. persons in south florida should be alert to rapidly rising water or flooding and be ready for quick action. move to a higher location should conditions become threatening.
