9832 – Monday

Whew – super hot out today – in the triple digits… and I’m designed for cooler weather. Inside the house, we have the a/c set for 69F and the thermometer is reporting about 10 degrees warmer in here. Still, not as bad as outside.

Larry’s work on the closet expansion is done – double the accessibility, and it looks nicer, too. All that remains is painting around the edge, and we’re finished. Next trick will be adding another walled off area at the foot of the bed for more storage space. BHK and I are enjoying sleep in our own bed again, and the kitties are very pleased to be allowed back in the bedroom.

We went to Selby’s for supper – saw the ATW man changed again – now he’s got his head stuck through a billboard showing him lazing on a beach at sunset, playing guitar to some bikini babes.  Additionally, Chris and Mandy spotted some local wildlife (turtles and spider) and a nice barn – I autopano’ed the bar, to add detail – a pretty spiffy stucture.

9542 – Monday

Well, Today was sure a Monday.

Early this morning the sewer backed up into the bathtubs, and overflowed the toilets. Gross, disgusting, yuck. Some sort of pipe issue there, but long story short, I worked form the house today. Still had access to the internet and phone, but a shower was right out. fortunately, the blue house is right up the street, so we could stop by and use the facilities as needs, but it’s still a hassle to plan ahead to use a bathroom or take a shower. This happened once last year, so the plumber is going to come out and replace the pvc pipe that has roots growing into it and replace it with something tougher – shouldn’t have to call anyone to roto-root out the issue again, unles tree roots become armor piercing.

so, I worked in my pjs, until a break time availed itself, and I took a quick shower between phone meetings and data repair.

After work, I was already home! BHK and I went out to Homestead garden store which was all decked out for the holidays (see the wrapped tree lights, and previous years)

Saw toy trains at homestead gardens – attached a vid from flickr, via cell phone. It was cuter in person!

We picked up a few holiday ornaments, all of which sum up one or both of our personalities:

A resin santa in green, a pair of little victorian postcard santas, and blown glass versions fo a pirate ship, a gorilla, a taco, and a zucchini. (pictures to follow, no doubt.) We also got a present or two, but I can’t speak of them here, in case they’re reading.

The place was essentially empty – a wonderful thing when you go christmas shopping on a Monday at 5:30 pm. They’re shoulder-to-elbow packed on weekends, and worse at this time of year.

Polished off the day by coming home, watching Big Bang Theory, and noshing on subway sammiches. (we opted out of chinese food, due to the latrine issue, and murphy’s law)

The Plumber should be by tomorrow, first thing in the morning – and David should by by after work tomorrow night. We’ll likely ge ttogether with the inlaws and hang out.

9323 – Tuesday – man loses left side in accident, he’s all right now.

The first estimate on cutting down the dangerous trees in our yard is right at $5000. $3100 for removing the two trees near the house (with the one near the power lines costing the most) and 1800 for the ones near our elderly neighbor’s house. The tree guy said the one directly behind the house looks like its dying.

Second had the $3100 reduced to $2200 – we’ll see what the guys tomorrow think. Still waiting to see what’s to be done re: the Element’s windscreen.

Had in-laws over for veggie meatloaf, salad and stir-fry veggies – all were delicious. (Larry had hot dogs – still doesn’t want to try non-meat stuff … not like hot dogs are all that higher in critter content!)

This Thursday the 19th is, according to WMATA, “Dump the Pump Day.” Residents are supposed to take advantage of metro in order to see how much money they will save on commuting costs for a day. They are also sponsoring a related contest to guess the daily ridership on Thursday – you could win a $100 SmartTrip card.

Thanks to an anonymous whistle-blower, a Walgreens pill-flipping scheme has been blown wide open, according to CBS. "Pill-flipping" refers the practice of pharmacies that purposefully switch Medicaid patients to more expensive versions of certain drugs for the sole reason of collecting more money from the government. Naturally, when this happens, taxpayers pick up the bill. Athough, Walgreen’s officially denies any wrongdoing they have agreed to pay the government more than $35 million.

9321 – Monday

Storm knocked a huge limb out of one of our trees – it bounced on the high power lines and then landed on the Element’s hood with a resounding thump. Dented the hood and front end in a few places and spider-webbed the windshield with cracks. I’m just glad nobody was hurt – Larry was fairly nearby. I’ll be interested to see how fast insurance turnaround will be on this. Homeowners should cover it with a minimal deductible.

I’m sort of disappointed that we didn’t get to hit artomatic – the last two weekends got nailed with Father’s day and general germy-ness. Hopefully it did well enough for Cyn to go back next year. It sounded like a hoot!

I want to ride the trolley, before it stops running, too. (I figure it’ll be in commission for at least 18 months more, before it stops working out for the city… but it looks like a good cheap way for BHK and I to tool around town for $0.25 a ride. With gas prices, you can’t get much better than that.

I mentioned this briefly on Saturday – the bakelite tiles in Hive are chunky (maybe 1/2 inch thick, and about 1 and 1/2 inch diameter) – much larger than I’d thought they would be. It’s even mose satisfying to play now, as a result. I’ve gotten so used to tiny counters and maybe things of “checker” size, that the bigger pieces are a real treat. Still waiting on Mosquito‘s arrival – not a huge deal, as BHK and I haven’t really gotten bored of the basic rules at all.

BHK and I played two games last night – If Wishes Were Fishes and Labyrinth. (I won both.) I suspect the dynaminc of Wishes will change if / when we introduce third, fourth and fifth players.

Todays entry, via wordle

Getting quite a bit better – still have a rattle in my chest and more coughing but the muscle aches and weakness is mostly gone. I’d say I’m currently firing on five out of eight cylinders.

A/c is now fully charged again – the repairman said that we’d be really baking without any refrigerant by Friday night. I’m glad BHK was there to explain what had been going on to him.

Tried calling my brother today – his voicemail is full. I haven’t heard from him since he was last bailed out. His hearing for the latest is in a week – I see in the public records that something was dismissed based on “Lack of Prosecution”. Not sure if it’s the same item, though. I need to research Thomas A Reynolds, it seems. Looks like his thing is real estate – probably an eviction notice long since passed.

BHK made ratatouille for dinner tonight, and the stars aligned for the movie to be playing on TV while we ate. Larry stuck with some pasta and sauce… BHK gave him some bake and eat tempura shrimp, too… He doesn’t know what he missed… zucchini, eggplant, tomato sauce, some olive oil in there… it was really good stuff.

Horror vacui:

Horror vacui is the filling of the entire surface of an artwork with ornamental details, figures, shapes, lines and anything else the artist might envision. It may be considered the opposite of minimalism.

I love that I can still learn new words and phrases every day.

via dnw – Scientists discover how optical illusions work. All of them.

The short version: It takes a tenth of a second for images to get from your retina to the processing centres of your brain. People have known this for decades, but we still see things in real time.

The new theory says that what we’re seeing isn’t what’s there, it’s what our brain projects will be there in a tenth of a second – our brain is processing predicatively, showing us it’s best guess for the future. And that’s why optical illusions can fool it, by confusing it into predicting a future that then doesn’t happen.

9311 – Sunday the 8th (counting up to Friday the 13th)

Today, I got sicker, bleah. Pains and stresses at an all time yuck factor.

Watched Old San Fransisco , assorted tv, and slept most of the day. BHK and I took a walk in the sun to try and loosen stuff up for about 45 minutes (or about a mile and a half) and while I think fresh air helps… I was more than ready to go rest afterward. For some reason, our water bottles tasted like onion.

A/C broken – house bounces between 80 and 95 degrees inside, depending on time of day. Fortunately, we have lots of ceiling fans, and the loft has a window-shaker unit, so the kitties, BHK and I won’t bake too badly as long as we stay upstairs.

thinking about my sweetheart, BHK – some savage garden –

Maybe it’s intuition
but some things you just don’t question
Like in your eyes, I see my future in an instant
And there it goes,
I think I found my best friend
I know that it might sound
more than a little crazy
but I believe…

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life

There’s just no rhyme or reason
Only the sense of completion
And in your eyes, I see
the missing pieces I’m searching for
I think I’ve found my way home
I know that it might sound
more than a little crazy
but I believe…

I knew I loved you before I met you
I think I dreamed you into life
I knew I loved you before I met you
I have been waiting all my life

9021 – tues jan 8

Got home tonight, and found out our water isn’t draining properly. Larry came by and tried plunging, but to no avail. Tomorrow, he’s bringing the snake by to take care of business.

I like that phrase… like an enforcer, “Tomorrow, the snake will take care of business”.

Hm.. or something pornographic, maybe.

Not much today – Worked, a very long meeting midday. Got some solid brainstorming done, and possibly a good lead for some side help from BR.

Got home, and BHK made me veggie meatballs, salad, and best of all, surprised me with my dream cake of chocoate / chocolate with mandarin oranges as a garnish. Yumma.

A nice demo of Portal is available free to NVIDIA customers – I have an ATI video card, but I also have the full version, so I can’t complain… especially since ATI gave me Half-life: deathmatch and lost coast.

Well, I liked what I saw, and if the bank agrees with me, I’ll be living there come the end of October. If not, well, it was a good try. Finances will be a little tight, because a lot of my cushion will be expended in the down payment.

It’s a large one-bedroom with a huge screened porch on the third floor. The place was built in ’69, and is in very good shape. Cinder block construction, seems nice and quiet and fairly hurricane safe. It’s about 4 miles North of my old place (and Newton’s first home – No Nose Maldonado‘s) in Pompano.. and the Strip Mall of Sin, and the Mall of the Dead.

Random cool factoid – a family of about 15 iguanas (including one HUGE yellow-orange male, must weigh about 40-50 lbs), and a few non-ugly (read – non aggressive or loud) ducks live by the fountain.

I may go to the club tonight and chomp the buffet there to celebrate. We’ll see how I’m doing.

Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman!

All the world’s waiting for you… and the power you possess.
In your satin tights, fighting for your rights
And the old Red, White and Blue.

Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman.
Now the world is ready for you and the wonders you can do.
Make a hawk a dove, stop a war with love, make a liar tell the truth!

Wonder Woman, get us out from under, Wonder Woman.
All our hopes are pinned on you and the magic that you do.

Stop a bullet cold, make the Axis fold,
Change their minds, and change the world.
Wonder Woman, Wonder Woman.

You’re a wonder, Wonder Woman!

ok… I’ve got a new A/C unit. Let’s hope that it has a repair duty cycle a little more reasonable than once a month. Spent some lovely time this afternoon with my sweetie, gabbin’ about vampires, alligators, the O’Hairs, school religion, murder…and more. I love that head she’s got on her shoulders… (and the rest of her is equally adored.)

Hmm.. internet at work is down, if I left at three (next available transport) I could be there at four thirty…, if I foobar, five. Is it worth the trip in? I’ll have to shave… right now my jaw whiskers are long enough to be considered a beard, though my goatee is much more full.

I’ll call and see if they need me at all. I dropped , at least for a time, because someone prefers not to put giant images behind a lj-cut. Maybe I’ll go back to it later, probably, I won’t. I have so many other lovely image journals that I read now… edbook, photosphere, , all have fascinating images with courteous members (or single artists)… not to mention the occasional photography and art that peppers sporadically elsewhere. (like juliabee and meredith)

While I wait for a callback, I’m going to relax.

p.s. you can download audio books with peer-to-peer sharing too… it’s not just first run movies and music! I’m grabbing the audio to Ann Rice’s Memnoch, the Devil and a few others.

Landlord didn’t call me… I rang him up at 9:20. He said that he was ten minutes away, and he was good as his word there. He picked up the unit, and took it with him just now. I showed him the best buy flyer, and informed him that 3 repairs in as many months is unacceptable, and that it was time for a new unit. He said that the current one is under warranty… I don’t know how, the thing is as old as the hills.

I’m going to have to demand a new unit if they say it’s going to take more than a couple of hours to repair.. I don’t need to miss any more work or have any more sleepless nights as a result of this.

Time for a quick shower to take some of the yuck off, now that he’s gone.

Yup, the A/C compressor died. Nobody to fix it today, the landlord says he’ll call first thing tomorrow morning and let me know what time he’s coming over. I pressed for what time first thing was, and he said 8:30. I’ll be calling him at 9am sharp if I don’t hear from him, and if he can’t make it any sooner than 11am, I’m going to end up missing work. if he can’t get to it at a reasonable hour tomorrow, I’m going to tell him that I’ll go to Sears, buy another wall unit, and deduct it from rent. In that case, the upside is energy efficiency and that my utility bill will drop.

Not a bad form letter. hopefully it means that someone’s on it.

Off to do laundry… until later, dear journal.

Kev’s get together went well… buds for supper, aliens vs predator 2 (my giftie to him) and then a viewing of “A Shot in the Dark“. A relaxing, humorous time. His sister’s doing well, only six more weeks of the colostomy bag, before she can go back to using her original plumbing.

ugh! why are my msn linked photos only showing up as thumbnails? as a side effect, my links also are not working.

TheAir conditioner’s compressor sounds funky… we’ll have to see if it makes it through the night. I suspect the LL is going to have to replace the unit.

ah well, time for bed… lots of chores to do tomorrow morn, before my playtime!

Got the LL… he says it’ll be 20-25 minutes.

He couldn’t bother to call, apparently. Not once in the many hours late that he’s running.

I’m calling it a day. By the time I make it into work, it’ll be time for me to head out. Unless Kev says that I must come in, I’m going to stay here.

Looking forward to getting the stuff I won on ebay… he got his paypal on Thursday, so I’m hoping he mailed the stuff out on Friday or Saturday. If I don’t see my goodies by the end of the week, I’ll write a little note and remind him. (Nice thing about paypal is that it’s like using a credit card… you can hammer scammers.) He seems like a good guy, though… 588 unique positives, 9 neutrals, and 7 negatives.

Phew… I now know what this apartment is lacking… Ceiling fans! I’m going to have to pick up a box fan I think.

Francesco was a meanie today, and didn’t meet up.. I think because the apartment still looked a little shabby, and the bathroom wasn’t finished yet. He was rude in that I called him up to let him know I’d be 10 minutes late, and he tells me he can’t make it at all.. no call or anything. I’d have just shown up and he’d have been MIA.

Two strikes against Francesco so far. (The first being the unfair price hike) Bro thinks that he may be leading me on, so that I’ll be stuck with his place as is… I suspect that may be true, or that F is spreading himself too thin, and is just inconsiderate. Neither is a good thing in a landlord.

My brother and I walked the neighborhood, collecting some more numbers… We found a one bedroom cottage that rocked, and is in my price range, but the owner has it promised to a girl in south carolina until July 2… two days too late… I’m going to call Francesco tomorrow, and see if I can still get the place, on a weekly basis… maybe move there, see if I like it, and then shunt to the cottage if the girl doesn’t come down…(though she’d be crazy to pass it up.. it’s a great deal, and a neat layout.) We’ll see what happens. one way or the other, I’ll be near Broward boulevard by the end of next weekend.

Upside, I did get out of work early, spent some time with my bro tonight, riding bikes and hanging out.. it is a beautiful neighborhood. Near the intercoastal, big, beautiful trees, a nice calm area. I look forward to moving there.

I admire the woman’s integrity by not being swayed by cash money tomorrow on the cottage…it’s just a pity her integrity is in the way of my getting that place when I’d like it.

Tucking in soon… sweet dreams, dear journal.

p.s. My Cable is officially off until I move into my new place. Videos and DVDs until then, I suppose for my background TV noise.
