8434 – Post from the porch

Today is a better day. So! It’s July. I’m getting good vibes from nice folks, and I’m digging that. I live in a world where everything is an unknown quantity, and it’s always a delight to know that the silos of kindness and affection are just as full as those of thoughtlessness and cruelty. I can deal, as long as there’s at least some balance.

People I need to check up on / Catch up with – HP, Whimsy, Sammy, Kerby and Kev. I’ve really only gabbed briefly with HP, and the rest, not at all, and they’re all worth talking to. The Hippies are in SC looking at land again this weekend, with Dave’s folks.

It’s not as hot out on the porch as I’d expected. Thank goodness for shade and a light breeze from the beach. I suspect it may swelter later in the day. Possibly getting together with Mom and Wilt for lunch or early supper today, depending on set schedule. They’ve got to be putting the gears in motion for the trip to sterling fairly soon.

Speaking of trips, I’ve got to put thumbscrews to my techs, and make absolutely sure that I can hit the keys next weekend, and verify/set up times with the weezeroniGreat Mazinga and boopydoodleBoopers for travel prep.

Wow, traffic really hits the bus fairly hard – Depending on the time of day, it’s anywhere from 5:45 to 8:45. Miami is the crux of that, no doubt. 71 bucks round trip isn’t too bad. I’ll keep this in mind if I decide to do a long weekend sometime. It actually takes longer to take the bust from Lauderdale to the Keys than it does to go to Orlando (between 5:20/4:40, at $89)That’s kind of wacky. A flight from ft laud to the keys takes less than an hour, and costs $230 round trip. I’m a frugal MacDougal, but that sort of speed might make me opt for the expensive alternative.

Of course, the best alternative is to go down with buddies, and split gas! 😀

Went with Danny to see Superman Returns – No spoilers here. I will say that the New guy does a pretty fair impersonation of Chris Reeves’ Supes/Clark, down to the midwest accent and goofy grin.

Danny gives it a 9 out of 10, and thinks it may be the best superhero movie he’s ever seen.

I’m a tougher sell – I liked it more than the x-movies… Supes had both a solid nostalgia going for it, but Spidey 2 is probably still my fave mainstream superhero movie. (Mysterymen and The Specials are really more my speed, though) I’d put it at a 7.5 out of 10. Neither female (Lois or parker posey’s character) did anything for me, though I think Jimmy Olsen was spot on. It seemed a bit long… Probably could’ve trimmed a little bit out, but I didn’t mind the way the movie played catchup with the folks there.

8432- farewell, June. I won’t be missing you.

Friday. Payday. Right before a 4-day weekend. Good thoughts for July… June fairly stunk, with a few nice exceptions. June seems to often be a bad month for me.. I’m glad it’s passed for another year.

Rather rushed this morning, more to follow tonight, or from the bus ride, no doubt.

All alone in this world am I
Not a care for this world have I
Only you keep my eyes open wide
Yes it’s true
I live for you

Not a thing in this world do I own
Only sadness from all that is grown
In this darkness I wait for the day
Yes it’s true
I live for you

For many years I wait
For many tears I wait

All this time my thoughts return to you
Give my love, that is all I can do
Wait in line till I feel you inside
Yes it’s true
I live for you

For many years I wait
For many tears I wait

All this time my thoughts return to you
Give my love, that is all I can do
Wait in line till I feel you inside
Yes it’s true

teddygun

A Japanese company called Sunamiya has developed a gun-shaped party cracker that shoots out a teddy bear. The teddy bear would then parachute down.

Developers hit on the idea after noticing that it had become a trend for people to throw teddy bears into the air instead of bouquets at wedding receptions.

8429 – Thursday again, yes it is.

Got some writing accomplished last night. Basic outline, some bits of dialogue. It’s not coming together in “freeflow” style I usually go for, but building on a planned skeleton seems to be working for me so far. 6 characters is a bit stereotypical so far… protagonist, romantic interest, street contact, police interface, villain and victim. I’ve got the method, but some aspects of the implementation aren’t quite on the beam. It wa skind of hard ot get rolling, but about 15 minutes in, the flow improved.

(Writing to Linda Ronstadt’s unreleased Keeping Out Of Mischief album certainly promotes noir. Got to love a good torch song from a voice like hers. Thank you, internet for obscure, but easy to download, lost vinyl!)

8423 – Most elephants weigh less than the tongue of the blue whale

While researching world hunger, I stumbled over this guy. Norman E. Borlaug

“Dr. Norman Borlaug is the first person in history to save a billion human lives. But he must also get credit for saving the wild creatures and diverse plant species on 12 million square miles of global forest that would long since have been plowed down without the high-yield farming he pioneered. The two accomplishments combined make him dramatically unique. I am proud to work with the Center for Global Food Issues, of which he is Chairman Emeritus.”

* Senator Rudy Boschwitz, R-MN, former member of the US Senate Agriculture Committee

A billion lives saved.

A *BILLION*.

A *BILLION* lives spared from starvation.

I can’t even properly conceive of that. 1/6th of the planet’s population?

Why had I never heard of him? That’ll teach me not to watch the West Wing or Penn & Teller’s TV show.

I knew it: (the word pants and trousers were disturbing me a great deal on Saturday, at the salvation army.)

In the early 19th century the words “trousers” and “pants” were considered obscene in England. Woman referred to trousers as “inexpressibles” or “a pair of dittoes.” Later in the century the taboo was carried to such lengths that piano legs were covered up because they reminded people of their human legs. In 1836 Charles Dickens wrote the following lines in Oliver Twist:

” ‘ I tossed off the clothes, got safely in bed, drew on a pair of ________’ ”

” ‘ Ladies present, Mr. Giles,’ murmured the tinker.

” ‘ _________ of shoes, Sir,’ said Mr. Giles, laying great emphasis on the word.”

Dan and I will likely hit the movies after work today, barring anything unforseen. I wonder if I’ll be able to keep awake throughout? Monday is usually fairly taxing due to morning meetnigs and midday catch-up.

Close your eyes and look at me
I’ll be standing by your side
In between the deep blue sea
And the sheltering sky
If we find no words to say
To the rhythm of the waves
Then we’ll both surrender there
Walking on air

And the worries of the day lie down
Under cover of the fading clouds
The secrets of the night
Come alive in your eyes
You don’t have to hurry
You don’t have to try
Cause you don’t have a care
You’re walking on air

ECN hooked me up with a side-gig for a website for her boss. That might make for a nice couple of hundred bucks in the next week or two – probably for about 2 or 3 days worth of work over the weekends in my downtime. I can cope with that. I’ve had quite a dry spell in that department since the grove shut down.

Looking forward to doing a little writing this weekend, too. I’m long out of practice, and I’m due to get back on the wagon again. I’ve been fooling with a new mystery-type idea, so I’ll see how well I can work that up into a few thousand words, give or take.

Set up Newtcam on Big Brain…That should eliminate all the random hang-ups lappie-cam was causing. If all goes well, I may experiment with streaming video again soon. As it is, I’m testing out an “autozoom” feature of the newest version of Where’s James webcam… we’ll see how it looks.

8403 – EN on call! yay!

Thanks in no small part to the monkey chow diaries, I think I’ve got a good idea on making an effort to eat better, and to help make the world a better place.

My current solution – I’m going to pay matching funds to a foundation for anytime I eat non-grocery items (and I won’t be spending much more – cutting purchase of said items in half – so I’ll be spending abou tthe same amount). Anything from a vending machine or a restaurant, I’ll be earmarking an equal amount of cash for a charity for feeding (or better, teaching to self-feed) someone else who is hungry.

Here is a list of 263 charities that provide food. Though, I might prefer to support organizations that catalyze sustainable changes, like Engineers Without Borders. (The old feed a man a fish versus teach him to fish thing).

If anyone can recommend a good, reputable charity (where money goes to the cause, not executive payroll) that teaches recovery of land / self-sustainable health to people, please let me know.

I’m going to turn my homepage’s yahoo ads and the paypal charity tip jar to focus on that aspect of helping others, at least until the First of July (I may extend it past that point, too, if I don’t come up with another idea that at least as useful) so, if anyone visiting Newtcam or any other page that has a yahoo ad clicks on it, they can help without spending anything.

Other Projects are Hurricane recovery, Race for Life Cancer Research, and Wigs for Kids – Not to mention the following clickable helpers:

A few sites for positive change – None of them cost a penny but can help to do good works.

The hunger site – free food to the hungry
Breast cancer site – Help to fund free mammograms
Child Health site – Help save young lives for free
Rainforest Site – help to preserve our rainforests
Animal rescue site – Feed an animal in need.

It frequently seems that people want what they cannot have. That’s not a problem, until it turns out that the *only* reason they want it is because they can’t have it. Very silly, especially when they don’t want it anymore once they have it.

Well, Duh, I say to myself. Just be glad that isn’t one of my failings… I’ve got enough on my own.

a bunch o’ quizzies

8402 – Late Morning Post, due to sleepy-headedness, and my not needing to be on call.

Last night was one of pleasant conversation. I was hardly on the web at all

Tomi called me from Finland on skype… it works surprisingly well. Sound was really clean, and it was nice catching up with him, though it was weird, given that he was about 8 hours ahead of me.

Topics: Good ol’ Days, Traveling to the Arctic Circle to see buddies, “the ‘Vette”, Kitties, Cigarettes & Cap’n Kangaroo and Kev re:Gitmo

Had another delightful million-year gab with Tina, too. She’s certainly got a gift for gab. I hope that she’s feeling better today… when she first called, she sounded like a 12 year old with vapor lock, but eventually, the bulk of her nasal-yuck cleared out, and the lungs sounded more loose and open.

Topics: Too Numerous to count (I think I may’ve found someone that can topic-jump more rapidly than I can) But included family, social Darwinism / social quirks, critters (cats, dogs and boars), economy, books primarily popcorn books), tasty food including an eggs and cheese ditty, not-so-tasty food, some very refreshing honesty, and an exceptionally foul-mouthed nun.

Speaking of Foul-mouthed: Listened to a Redd Foxx album recently, and man… I don’t mind blue comedians, but he was just awful. A bunch of weak one-liners. No craft to his work at all. At least Eddie Murphy and Richard Pryor build a story that has some profanity – not just a quick “zinger” with a rude ending. Probably, I’m just a different audience – I like Bill Cosby’s albums and Steve Martin’s stuff.

Jack the cat chases black bear up tree

capt.d429145a753041439aad741f7aa5fe6a.aptopix_cat_scares_bear_wxs102capt.7825385bce084b65adefeada0f873df3.cat_scares_bear_wxs103

WEST MILFORD, N.J. – A black bear picked the wrong New Jersey yard for a jaunt earlier this week, running into a territorial tabby who ran the furry beast up a tree — twice.

Jack, a 15-pound orange-and-white cat, keeps a close vigil on his property, chasing small animals when he can, but his owners and neighbors say his latest escapade was surprising.

“We used to joke, ‘Jack’s on duty,’ never knowing he’d go after a bear,” cat owner Donna Dickey told The Star-Ledger of Newark for Friday’s newspapers.

Neighbor Suzanne Giovanetti first spotted Jack’s accomplishment after her husband saw a bear climb a tree on the edge of their northern New Jersey home’s back yard on Sunday. Giovanetti thought Jack was simply looking up at the bear, but soon realized the much larger animal was afraid of the hissing cat.

After about 15 minutes peering down at the cat from the tree, the bear descended and tried to run away, only to have Jack chase it up another tree.

At this point Dickey, who feared for her cat, called Jack back home and the bear scurried back to the woods.

“He doesn’t want anybody in his yard,” Dickey said.

Bear sightings are not unusual in West Milford, which experts consider one of the state’s most bear-populated areas.

8398 – Why don’t they?

It’s funny, the things see when they read my lj (or anyone’s, really). How we come across in writing isn’t always how we come cross in “real life”. My journal makes me out to be a pretty intelligent, loving goofball… I think. That’s really only part of what I’m all about. I’m not all rainbows, fluffy bunnies, complaints about my brother and goofy random links about monkeys, robots and bears.

I have my judgmental side, and my angry side, and my lonely side, and my frisky-horndog side… but few, if anyone wants to see that, so many posts of those natures are private or filtered… However, sometimes these do bleed into the public arena one way or another.

I sometimes wonder how people who have known me for years view this lj… do they wonder why I leave some things that are way too much TMI, while other fairly innocuous items get filtered or Scotto’s eyes only?

Went to Maya (was Ole’ Ole’) and the food was lacking quite a bit. They forgot vital aspects of the meal, listed on the menu, and the overall quality was about a 4/10. Fortunately the dinner conversation was more than pleasant, and made up for the mediocrity of the cheese enchiladas. Note to self, take the 10 bus home, as the 11 was just a smidgen late for maximum comfort. Took a nice long roam around riverwalk and talked about whatever comes to mind. It was quite a nice diversion and was once again, a pleasant time-sink. There’s something to be said for being able to discuss a wide variety of topics effortlessly.

I hear the drums echoing tonight
But she hears only whispers of some quiet conversation
She’s coming in 12:30 flight
The moonlit wings reflect the stars that guide me towards salvation
I stopped an old man along the way
Hoping to find some long forgotten words or ancient melodies
He turned to me as if to say, “Hurry boy, it’s waiting there for you”

8391 – Getting ready to switch over to being on-call.

I don’t only use the word “fantastic”, I’m not always using it in a positive light *or* being snarky. If someone tells me of an idea that is totally out of left field, I’ll refer to it as fantastic, meaning it was borne of fantasy. Something can be fantastic, and terrible.

Likewise, when I hear the term “horsefeathers” my mind immediately thinks of a pegasus.
