7709 – still awake.

Still awake. My sleep patterns are more disrupted by this situation than the whole 9/11 thing, probably because it’s an ongoing struggle, not so much of a “flash and crash” disaster.

Fats Domino – Helping Hand: (mp3via)

I’m a thousand miles away from home, sleeping in the rain
A thousand miles away from home, waiting for a train
Nobody seems to want me or give me a helping hand
I nevermore will roam again if I ever get home again

Glad to have you found, sir.

Wind chimes outside are over-sounding the noises inside… just key-clicks, and computer fans at the moment.

I’m in a mood to go out and walk in the dark, but can’t, because I’m still tethered to the home-office due to call. It’s been a surprisingly quiet night for missing people. I suspect that the phone will be rather tricky in a few hours, because the office is closed for the holiday, but people will still call.

We’ve been getting a lot of calls for the Florida Marine Patrol.. I think someone’s telephone directory has us listed there by mistake, or on a line just above or below where the other one should be.

7708 – The Buzzin’ of the Bees

Google created a special satellite view of New Orleans using imagery taken on Wednesday, August 31st. Search Google Maps for New Orleans to see it (you can then switch between “Map”, “Satellite”, “Hybrid”, and “Katrina”).

I thought that I got my reprieve at 8pm last night, but lost it again at 9pm, when En’s cable went out. So much for walkabout, or checking out that property in Deerfield after all. I’m guessing I’m in for the long haul for the holiday weekend. I’m not going to let it tick me off… just going to accept the situation and move on.

Weezle was trying to negotiate a trade of baked goods for genetic goods, and made me eep. I got to gab with Lisa-Lisa over google talk, and they got it set up without Naser-Guru’s assistance, which is pretty impressive.

Two versions of the current music. I love ’em both, for different reasons.

7703 – Saturday Morning

Due to Eric’s Comcast internet service sucking yet again, I had to take call last night, and again this morning. So, no movie with Dan though we did have sushi and hang out at my apartment of a few hours. I may get a reprieve today… we’ll see.

We spent most of our time talking about fluff. Lost, Discworld, etc. A little about current events, too, of course. The topic of martial law came up, and I was surprised that we basically agreed that it was a slippery slope.

Working with missing children is especially hard at this time, but we’re doing everything we can. The situation is really too large for any and all agencies in existence to handle… National Center / Clearinghouses are processing quite a lot of information and I fear weakened accuracy and utility due to burnout, overburdens and fatigue.

Even though most of what we handle is telephony and the phones are out in the worst areas, the outlying regions as far as Texas, Georgia and Florida have significant bleed over.

7701 -PSA – contact your representatives.

In response to the disintegrating scene in New Orleans, Kevin points out that email, faxes, and phone calls are needed — not just money.

All it takes is for you, and others you can reach by email or journal, to contact your two senators and congressperson and demand immediate action as begged for by New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin. When Mayor Nagin was asked how we can help, he said contact your Senators and Congressperson now. Here is a site you can just click on your state or put in your zip code to reach a link for a form email to go to your Senators and Congressperson. If you do not have time to do an email, feel free to use the one I give you below.

Please take 5 minutes:

  • Email your Senators and your Congressperson(s)
  • What to say? Use your own words or cut and paste this: New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin needs the federal government’s help today. He has told me through the media that people are dying by the hundreds, his police are being overrun and that he needs troops & lots of them, he needs buses (500 or more), he needs health care support and he needs water and food. Things in New Orleans are worse today than yesterday. The President is traveling to the gulf today and ending his day in New Orleans. Please contact him and tell him he, with your support, needs to act today to help Mayor Nagin and the people of New Orleans.
  • Tell the White House directly at: comments@whitehouse.gov
  • Spread the word by email or journal; pass on this message
