A Reminder from dictionary.com

Q. What is the plural of virus?

A. Viruses.

It is not viri, or (worse) virii. True, the word comes directly from Latin, but not all Latin words ending in -us have -i as their plural. Besides, viri is the Latin word for ‘men’ (plural of vir, “man,” the root of English virile). There is in fact no written attestation of a Latin plural of virus.

If you have some knowledge of linguistics and Latin, you might be interested in the morphological analysis of the word from the Perseus Project.

I *really* like my new clothes. Losing weight is a good thing… I figured it out – Garganticus and Foomy got shorts from George Foreman’s collection at the “Big and Tall” (or Looming and Vast, depending on how far you go… You could put a sharp dress suit on the Hulk right off the rack.)… my new pants and shorts are comfy, and I’m not “lost” in them anymore. It’s nice to have some shorts that fit properly. I picked up a nice linen tunic-looking jersey, too. (For days that I’d like to dress like Barney Rubble) I held back on the Hawaiian shirts…a bit expensive, and wasn’t what I was really there for. Maybe next time. It seems sort of feminine or at least “metrosexual” to be this happy about new clothes, but that’s what’s up. Small pleasures. Man, the prices online are horrid… either that or I stumbled into a lot of good sales.

Bro came by and borrowed a few DVDs. I hope I see them again. Five Deadly Venoms, Tank Girl, Titan AE, MechaGodzilla, and a few others. The only ones I’ll really miss are the badly dubbed kung fu and giant rubber monster movies. Upside, he was clean and pressed… either looking for work, or doing something where he’d have to look non-scrubby, anyhow. I’m happy to see him looking sharp and attentive to detail.

I would really like a multiplayer computer version of Car Wars online, akin to City of Heroes. It’d look a bit like CoH’s Boomtown, I think.

Yeah, I’ll buy that. Hopefully I’ll just stay within 60 life units from home, eh?

I altered my website a little… swapped the name on the melons picture to discourage many remote linkers. (.htaccess is a little extreme yet, but I’ll block that directory, if I have to in the future.) I gave them a replacement picture of Ganesh, instead.

The Hulk Coloring Book! – going to let ol’ jade-jaws know about it, and cross-post to the community.

Downloaded a bunch of fresh ebooks this weekend… folks should really do the job right, and run it through some OCR software. Shrinks the size, and lets you search text. I may re-distill a few of these and make them available again, just to see how fast some of the reseeding is absorbed.

I also downloaded, watched Fahrenheit 911 (after getting a fake at first) along with Scary Movie 3, and promptly deleted them afterward. (something I kept was the *Roger* Moore episode of the Muppet show. Hooray for broad search keys! Also funny were how many misspellings of Michael and Fahrenheit there were.) My biggest gripe is going to be trying to talk about Ray Bradbury’s 451, without some dumbass trying to correct me.

F911 was what I expected, basically factual, but over the top… Though not as much as I’d expected. Moore is making a personal political statement. The film has more truth than many want to believe, and it does distort events to make a bigger point. The points I agree with, the methods, not so much. Maybe things have to be elevated to bread and circuses-level for people to pay attention?

SM3 was a very silly, but entertaining one-shot. Nice to cleanse the political palate with gutter jokes. Best summation? “Answers The Ring‘s questions with poop and boobies.”

Puppy prevents Canadian killing spree

A Canadian man, driving a car packed with weapons and ammunition, was intent on killing as many people as possible in a Toronto neighborhood but gave up the plan at the last minute when he encountered a friendly dog, police say.

The middle-aged man, who police say is mentally disturbed, had planned to carry out the shooting spree on Wednesday to ensure he would be put in jail permanently.

Police say he had set himself up in an east-end park to load his weapons and then planned to drive around shooting.

He told police that a dog then approached and started playing with him.

Police say the encounter melted the man’s heart, and he then went in search of police to give himself up.

“He happens to be a pet lover, and decided that since there was such a nice dog in the area, that people were too nice and he wasn’t going to carry out his plan,” Detective Nick Ashley said.

Police have found 6,000 rounds of ammunition, two rifles, a shotgun, a semi-automatic pistol, a revolver and an air rifle in the man’s car, along with a machete and a hunting knife.

The car also contains a throwing knife, a camouflage mask and netting.

James Paul Stanson, 43, has been charged with a variety of weapons-related offenses and appeared in court for a bail hearing on Thursday.
