9653- Wednesday

Bro’s girlfriend / possible mother to his kid Shannon has been found, and she and her baby are doing OK – Momster is distancing herself from the situation – and I think that’s a good thing.

Google voice – free phone goodies –

http://www.google.com/support/voice/bin/answer.py?answer=142423 – That sounds amazing… google… I hope you don’t turn too evil on me!

Ran a query to update about 20000 drivers for a client – amazing what a little snippet of code in the right place at the right time will do.

update driver_details set timestamp=’2009-03-18 20:10:00′

WHERE

driver_details.MC_ACCT_NO =  ‘**account number**’ AND

driver_details.DRV_TERMINATED_DT is null

That’ll earmark all the active users for that group and send an update file to everybody. Hooray for Triggers !

Chasing potential errors after, now. Seems to be working within parameters, save for one not splitting properly.

Chinese food from the Octagon tonight – this was try #2 – I suspect BHK’ll be leery of a third try, unless Little Panda or Grace’s are closed.

9639 – Friday

BHK gave me a lift in to work this morning – let me sleep in an extra hour or so. I repay her by going over her accent on the way in – we were talking about someone’s "pen collection", and With BHK, Pin & Pen sound alike – and I had no context cues to work with. so I innocently asked if it was the writing implement or the sharp thing that pierces fabric.

That devolved into a Rosetta-stone style communication back and forth – She doesn’t pronounce the difference between pin or pen. Long story short, we just were silly and giggly on the ride in – perhaps you had to be there, dear journal.

[update – noonish]

Found out this afternoon that my brother’s girlfriend Shannon has had a relapse and has vanished with her baby (Bro’s daughter). Bro is still in prison for the next few months (out in May) – My Mom is understandably upset – had bonded some with the child and is looking into legal recourse. I really don’t think that they’ve even established paternity yet, so I doubt she has much to work with.

I am a bit cold about the whole thing – saw this coming (heck, I dealt with Derek’s bouts back and forth with rehab, and know how that whole deal works), but there is not a lot I can do for any of them.

She’s made a good decision not to pursue custody or guardianship or anything like that and I feel she made a good, if very difficult choice.

Tomorrow, BHK and I are attending the United Way Mardi Gras – we got comp tickets from the Maerten’s Gang!

We’re taking a limo, with the whole crew, and it’ll be like BHK and I are going to prom. I’m looking forward to it all!

Picnic at home night! BHK and I are going to have fun with a light supper of veggies, fruit and cheese … just lots of fun and relaxation – just what a Friday night should be! Starting in a little bit… until later, dear journal!

9555- Saturday

Got my allergy shots – down to only needing them every other week, now!

Still feeling yucky – took a nap today from 3-6 pm, and my crown feels a little loose. Maybe an infection under there is messing with me? Or maybe it’s the big dose of meds today.

In-laws came over, and we had tasty soup and sammiches. I’m still not eating much, but can certainly enjoy what I am eating.

After eats, we finally finished hanging the ornaments on the tree. All that is left now is to set up the train… and maybe a few fun bits of landscape. The green beaded string didn’t show up too well on the tree this year, so we strung our holiday cards over the living room window, and it looks sharp. I think we may do this in years to come.

The in-laws headed home a little while ago – they stopped out front of our house with the engine running, and called inside to let us know that Chris lost an earring – while we were looking for it, BHK heard yelling on the phone – it turns out a pedestrian walked up to the truck, opened the door, and then took off when Larry yelled at him.

Chris and Larry went home, but BHK got the guys description and called the police. I suspect it was a drunk looking for a ride – that’s still not the sort of thing you want to take place in your front yard. We talked to the sheriff, and they sent prowl cars around, but he didn’t turn up.

[EDIT – Later that evening, just up the street (about 5 blocks closer to the bay) –

"Dep. Daniel Deakins investigated a burglary to Nice and Fleazy Antiques on Bay Ave in North Beach on December 19 at 3:27 a.m. The unknown suspect(s) cause $1125 in damage. The business owner is conducting an inventory to determine exactly what was taken. Inquires regarding this burglary should be directed to Lt. Steven R. Jones at 410-535-1600 ext. 2462."

9526 – Monday

Feeling better today. Physical Therapy seems to be working out some of the back issues, thankfully. Mentally and physically in a more positive place – also, sundown was at 4:45 today. I certainly suspect that I don’t have Seasonal Affective Disorder. I think that the dark and cold weather mostly suits me, even if I try to be a warm and cheery sort of person.

After PT we went to Mexico for supper. I was perversely hungry for Mexican food after seeing a filthy Mexican resaurtant on Kitchen Nightmares yesterday. The food was superb – BHK and I both sussed out that it was the cook that sometimes works in Lusby on the kitchen tonight.

My mom met Shannon and her possible granddaughter – (well, by proxy – Shannon is still pregnant, due in a month or so.) I’m still not sure how that’s going to pan out.

Newt is really enjoying the ledge in the loft these days… one of the warmest spots in the house! I hope he shares with Pye, at least a bit. Hm.. somehow I doubt it. Interesting that his winter coat is a bit more visible than usual – likely that he and Pye were running around pretty heavily before naptime.

cutenewtonpyecam

Physical Therapy today. Leg lifts, stretches, bicycle, and then the stim/heat combo that works so well for me. I needed it – I was really stiff yesterday.

Forgot to mention yesterday that Chris and Larry brought over a couple of preacher cookies for us… much better than the last batch a year ago – see archive below.

While I was fixing BHK’s machine, I was multitasking a bit – catching up with scripting, listening to old episodes of Dragnet in the background – The radio show is really superior to the TV series. Additionally – I listened a bit to some of my old time radio broadcasts. OTRcat sent me a nice collection of Richard Diamond not too long ago in exchange for a link on my website – the clarity on them was excellent, especially given that the condition of the original recordings must’ve been a real problem to fix. I’ll be looking to go back to him for more OTR goodies as time goes by. Dick Powell is no slouch as a voice actor, and I’m really pretty glad to have my collection filled out. (5 CDs worth of stuff, I’ve only begun to begin to listen. (I’m thinking about getting the Edgar Allan Poe Collection next – maybe for road trips through Baltimore)

Went to the Walgreens and I got BHK a pedegg – foot callous remover and orange zester, apparently. I think it’s a pretty surreal device, and is more surreal to me en espanol.

I just realized something about German boardgames. Seldom do you see dice. Cards are drawn and are sometimes used as randomizers, but you can still play the odds a bit – it’s rare to roll the ol’ bones. I wonder why?

Bengie’s is showing Wall-E, Dark knight and step brothers… I don’t think that I care to see Dark knight again, so it looks like we’ll wait another week or so before our return trip to the drive-in.

Follow up on the mayor’s “drug raid / dog shooting” indecent. He’s completely innocent, it seems. Prince George’s County Police really fouled up, in my opinion. That and the armed car chase through my neighborhood (well outside PG county jurisdiction) only adds to my problem with that organization. Some sort of Internal Affairs review needs to be done… but it seems unlikely.

“The mayor’s counsel also disputes authorities claims that they killed the dogs, Chase and Payton, because one of the dogs was coming at officers. Maloney says one dog was running away and the other was shot some distance from the front door.

Still, county law enforcement officials say they do not owe the Calvo’s an apology. Chief High defended the officers actions, but expressed regret over the death of the dogs.”

As someone that’s been at swat team gunpoint more than once… (06/02/2001 when my landlord went loopy with his guns over his face cancer and 02/24/2004 once when my bro committed “grand theft boat”.) – I can honestly say that sometimes the police has good reason to hold someone under potential deadly force. I’m thankful that neither I nor Newton were shot

Well, bro is right on the border of the 44 violation points rule. (he has exactly 44 points)(pdf info ) If convicted of all of his charges, he could either do under a year in county jail, or over a year in state prison.

from here

If total points are equal to or less than 44, the lowest permissible sentence is a non-state prison sanction (however state prison up to the statutory maximum can be imposed).

If total points exceed 44, the minimum sentence is established by taking the total point value subtracting 28 and decreasing the remaining value by 25%. This end result value is the lowest permissible prison sentence in months.

This means than only those offenders scoring 44 or less points may receive a non- state prison sanction under the code. All others must receive a state prison sanction, absent downward departure from this structure. The threshold under the guidelines for mandatory prison incarceration was 52 points.

and from here

The magic number is 44: Anyone scoring above 44 points “must” be sentenced to state prison under the Code. However, the plea bargaining process can a) reduce the number of counts charged, b) have an agreement not to score certain items, c) substitute charges, d) reduce the actual count charged, or e) several other creative techniques can be used to get someone sentenced to a non-incarcerative sentence. Note the departure grounds under Rule 3.992(b), but also note the actual language of the “Sentence Computation” because someone charged with a felony can be sentenced to state prison even if the score fewer than 44 points. For this reason, felony cases are always very serious legal matters.

For his Faces of Evil project, Hans Weishäupl made composite photographs of the world’s worst dictators by photographing hundreds of people in each dictator’s country and stitching them together. The results are a bit disturbing, particularly when viewing very large, clear, vibrant color photos of long-dead monsters like Stalin or Hitler. (via conscientious)

It seems that now that Obama has the nomination from the Left, he can pretty much as Right as he wants, as long as he’s not quite as far Right as McCain.

I read this blog post, and I think it sums things up. Also, I just read that Obama voted in favor of a wiretapping bill.

Say what I may about Hillary, but at least she stood up for our civil liberties in that vote. Barack Obama did not, after promising us that he would. I am very disappointed in him right now.

Seeya, 4th amendment.. it’s like I hardly knew ye.

The odd thing to me is that McCain abstained from voting on it at all. I wonder why he didn’t go one way or the other?

So, do I want kind-of right wing, or full-bore? As always, I don’t want any of the candidates.

Watched Be Kind Rewind tonight. It was a little ragged around the edges, but we both really liked it a lot. It reminded me a bit of the old movies that Steve Jacoby, Brent Ashland, Kevin Albury, Kevin Cummins, etc. and I made with Brent’s video camera… Raiders of the Lost Sock, the Arthurian Project, and so on.

We have so many leftovers in the fridge that it is potluck night in Casa de von Berg. I opted for a blend of baked ziti and veggie lasagna, while BHK had sausage and veggies. There was much nom nom nom’ing.

Sneakily added by bhk:

In other news my wife has chewed most of the blue gumballs in my Easter candy jar on my desk and started on the jellybeans. I take full blame—I shouldn’t have opened it I should have taken it to work!! How could I have so thoughtlessly put that delectable candy goodness on my desk to tempt her! I think I’m just jealous because she has almost no cavities (only one small tiny cavity that she just got recently—probably from kissing my sugary mouth)—I’ll make her a rot-mouth yet! Just checked on my Brother’s record online, and it says he’s in 12MM (Male Infirmary). I wonder what happened to him? He’s now in the North Broward Bureau, which is already a bad sign.

From the site

The North Broward Bureau is a minimum to medium security, special needs detention facility housing male and female offenders. The facility also houses protective custody female offenders and female juveniles. The facility currently holds 1,200 inmates.

The primary mission of the facility is to house and manage the mentally ill, medically infirm and special needs inmate population.

Momster pulled his police report – It seems he’d parked in a handicapped space, and when the police ran his tags, the car he was in was reported stolen. Apparently his license was expired, as well. It was certainly enough to violate probation.

[Edit – in 11c now, out of the infirmary. Bro has been there before. My guess is he is detoxing or being treated for bi-polar as he has claimed that in the past.]

BHK and I skipped on movie and dinner at Friendly’s – too much fair food and activity made it simpler to just head on home after work.

Rough day, but worth having. I got pretty upset and discombobulated about my brother’s situation, as I am prone to be – especially with his birthday coming up and talking to the momster on the phone. I’ve got to remember to put on better armor before picking up the phone at this time of year. It really wore me out, and I’m glad that I got to flush my system a little bit.

Neighborhood shakeup tonight at about 7pm – A minivan chasing another – apparently the second vehicle had 2-4 people inside with the side doors open and guns showing. The vehicle being chased was honking and swerving all over the place to avoid being shot.

BHK called 911, and the response time was *terrible*, and she was never questioned by the police for a report on the matter. I’ll be investigating that situation more tomorrow after work.

I’m just glad that she’s ok.

Random factoids and semi-specific things about people I know (or knew):

My brother is *really good* at shucking oysters. At least 4-5 times faster than me, or 2-ish times faster than anyone else I’ve ever met in the service industry.

My wife is a superb analyst, and can get to the core of a matter quite swiftly. She’s going to be an awesome lawyer. (and dangerous gamer)

Steve Jacoby has some beautiful children, and has the makings for a pretty cool dad.

Tina keeps a lovely home… everything is crisp and neat, even with a pair of kitties, a bunch of birds, and living the software company lifestyle.

Bruce can make me misty with just a bowl of cheerios .

Ray has a very real skill at blending words and experience into story.

Kathleen has a great memory, to the point of us calling her queen index when we were gaming. If she doesn’t have knowledge, she can find it fast.

Cyn has a fantastic skill at illustration, both on paper and skin.

Doug Wu has a near encyclopedic knowledge of comics from the silver age. Knows more than anyone else I’ve ever met.

Danny is a mill that grinds slowly, but exceedingly fine. He’s a living example of “the devil is in the details.”

Father-in-law is loved by everyone he meets. *Nobody*, and I mean *nobody* has anything sideways to say about him. That’s amazing.. and due to him.

Mother-in-law is a superb cook. Some wicked good queso, for example.

Mother is a master multitasker. I’ve never seen her with too much on her plate.

Wilton is an excellent carpenter – can put all manner of stuff together with quality and speed.

LONDON (Reuters) – Lawyers and judges are to break with centuries-old tradition and cease wearing horse-hair wigs of white fake curls in non-criminal cases, the head of the country’s judiciary announced on Thursday.

The Lord Chief Justice, Lord Phillips of Worth Matravers, said new dress rules would mean the requirement for the wigs, which legal professionals have worn since the 17th century, would not be needed in civil or family court cases.

Wing collars and bands can also be dispensed with in such cases according to the reforms, while judges will need just one gown in future instead of a variety of colourful outfits currently required.
The wigs will still be worn in criminal courts.

“At present High Court judges have no less than five different sets of working dress, depending on the jurisdiction in which they are sitting and the season of the year,” Phillips said in a statement.
“After widespread consultation it has been decided to simplify this.”

A review carried out in 2003 found that more than two thirds of respondents wanted to eliminate the wigs in civil cases, although most said criminal court judges should still wear them.

Opponents of wigs thought they were anachronistic, as well as uncomfortable and expensive.

A shoulder-length ceremonial wig costs more than 1,500 pounds while the shorter ones worn by lawyers cost about 400 pounds each.

However, the idea of abolishing them has been met with disapproval from some lawyers who feel the wigs give them an air of authority as well as anonymity.

“While there will never be unanimity of view about court dress, the desirability of these changes has a broad measure of agreement,” Phillips said.
