9384 – Saturday

Got my shots – minor reaction, but nothing tragic.

Met up with the in-laws, and headed to selby sub shoppe – pizza for all, I got a black bean burger and fries. Tasty as all get out!

We planned on heading to Annapolis after to go see Wall-E, but instead we stopped at Toys-R-Us, and picked up Marvel Heroscape and Good Ol’ Scrabble.

Heroscape is cute.. sort of like heroclix or D&D miniatures. The fun thing is that it’s cross-genre, so you can have cowboys shooting at zombies, fighting robots, ninjas, superheroes and cavemen all on the same board. (and if you like, you can make custom cards for units very easily – so you can have spongebob fighting a paperclip, if you want.) Basic rules are quick and easy… advanced rules look more fun, and maybe another moment or two to learn.

BHK and I opted to head back home after getting our loot – there was a storm brewing… even tornado warning, and we wanted to be curled up at home anyhow.

0802081841.jpg

We swung by the ATW man – done up as a prospector – I’ll try to get better photos of him later.

Watched some tube, lounged, and the in-laws came over – we half watched Micheal Clayton while we played scrabble – Chris dominated.. and she was half asleep. I’d hate to think of what sort of opponant she’s make at full mental charge. Chris scored 258 to my 247 and BHK’s 162 – and Chris laid all of her letters down first turn… accounting for 63 of those points! I was feeling a little sour-grapey, but not too much… our dictionary is a bit on the lightweight side… time to get something unabridged. The plus size was that it caused me to rethink words I’d use in a pinch… like “QI“, but instead, items that are in more everyday language.

The folks went home, but BHK was still up for a wordgame, so we went with another – BHK dominated me at upwords – beat me by more than 40 points.

My brain is melted a bit.. until later, dear journal!

Upgrading the computer in the newtcam room at home – ordered 2 GB more ram for my system (Crucial 2GB Kit (2 x 1GB) DDR2 PC2-4200 UNBUFFERED NON-ECC 240-PIN DIMM, to be specific) -ups my desktop box to a proper 4 gig for less han $50, and a new video card – (EVGA e-GeForce 8800 GT 512 MB DDR3 Superclocked Edition PCI-Express Graphics Card (512-P3-N802-AR) – got it for less than half what it usally costs – $300 card for $160, less anothera $20 rebate for a total of $140

Super saver shipping means possibly slower send times, but the price was right, and I don’t need it super soon.. I can wait a week or two.

SWAT team kills 2 dogs in raid on Md. mayor’s home

BERWYN HEIGHTS, Md. — A SWAT team raided the home of a Washington, D.C.-area mayor, killing his two black Labrador retrievers and seizing an unopened package of marijuana delivered there.

Prince George’s County Police said Berwyn Heights Mayor Cheye Calvo brought a 32-pound package of marijuana into his home that had been delivered by officers posing as delivery men. The Tuesday evening raid was conducted by county police narcotics officers and a sheriff’s office SWAT Team.

The package was addressed to Calvo’s wife, Trinity Tomsic. His mother-in-law had asked the supposed delivery men to leave the package outside. Calvo has not been charged, though police said he, his wife and his mother-in-law are “persons of interest” in an ongoing investigation.

“We never opened the box. We have nothing to do with this box,” Calvo said.

Sheriff’s office spokesman Sgt. Mario Ellis says deputies “apparently felt threatened” when they shot the dogs.

Calvo said officers entered about 7:30 p.m., first shooting 7-year-old Payton. They then pursued 4-year-old Chase, who ran away and was shot by police from behind, he said.

Calvo said he doesn’t have any idea how the package ended up at his house. He called the raid “the most traumatic experience” of his life.

Calvo, who called his town “Mayberry inside the Capital Beltway,” gets a small stipend as mayor and works at the SEED Foundation, a nonprofit that runs public boarding schools for at-risk students. His wife works as a state finance officer.

“These were two beautiful black Labradors who were well-known in the community. We walked them twice a day; little kids knew their names and would come up to them and pet them,” he said.

So… the police brought drugs to the house, and then raided him… but then didn’t arrest or press any charges? They *did* however kill his two dogs.

9332 – Monday

Good solid day of work today – getting a lot done and covered. Met the new VP, and he seems like a really nice guy who knows his stuff. I wish I could advise him more on commuting, but he’s a car guy, and not a train or bus sort.

After work, BHK and I went out to lemongrass for a little date – the food was excellent and the company wonderful. It was raining like gangbusters outside, so we stayed for dessert… the Thai doughnuts and fried ice cream were also great, but I tihnk I ate way too much. After the weather let up a bit, we went to petsmart to look at the critters, and saw an army gal with a haircut that made her look a bit like donald duck.

Went home, watched the pilot of middleman. I liked it – it was a little sticky, but forgivable in a pilot episode… There was a super-intelligent gorilla in a tracksuit, which was pretty cool, but I’d prefer that they not mention comics so much. I didn’t need a Grodd reference. He was more like the Mod Gorilla boss to me, anyhow. The “filthy paws / damn dirty ape” quote was expected, but really, that’s forgivable. I’ll be watching it again, and expect it’ll gain some momentum if all goes well.

In honor of Swarm of the Snakehead, I made my own proto – snakehead beastie (you can download him at the link) in Spore yesterday. BHK’s bitey monopod will be uploaded soon, too.

George Carlin passed away. I think that his routines in recent years got a little… I don’t know… Lame? Turned more from radical or wacky to just whiney “get off my lawn you kids” humor? I feel the same way about him the way I feel about a lot of folks I liked more when I was younger – maybe I outgrew him, like I did Harlan Ellison’s angry young guy shtick as it turned into an angry old guy bit. As I age, it gets harder to be entertained by that sort of thing. Maybe they both just ran out of whatever mojo kept them fresh and interesting to me. I still like the old stuff. Not as angry, not as bitter… things can have bite and not seem just sad. He was a great satirist during the bulk of his life, and I’m sure he will be missed.

I saw him in “concert”, at FAU, ages ago with Jeremy Dawsey. I don’t remember where James was, or why he wasn’t along. We had a *fantastic* time, and it was likely the only time I’ve seen a comedian in the last 20 years that wasn’t “schticky”… fat guy telling fat jokes, lesbian telling lesbian jokes, black guy doing black jokes, prop comics… etc, etc, etc.

I’ll just choose to remember this:

Some people say the glass is half empty.
Others say the glass if half full.
I say the glass is too big.

–George Carlin

LOS ANGELES — Hollywood will enshrine an eclectic bunch in its famous curbside Walk of Fame next year, including Hugh Jackman, Ben Kingsley, The Village People and fictional Tinker Bell.

Recipients of the sidewalk stars also include Felicity Huffman, William H. Macy, Cameron Diaz, Robert Downey Jr., Tim Burton, Leslie Caron, Charles Durning, Ralph Fiennes, William Petersen, Kyra Sedgwick, John Stamos, Mark Burnett, Chuck Lorre, Kenny “Baby Face” Edmonds, Dave Koz, The Miracles, Doug Morris, Rush, Shakira, KFI radio personality Bill Handel and KCRW host Harry Shearer, who also provides voices for characters on “The Simpsons.”

Cheeta isn’t on the list. The animal actor, whose credits include the 1967 comedy “Doctor Dolittle” and the “Tarzan” movies, was trying for the seventh time to get a sidewalk star.

His handlers had launched an online petition to get supporters to urge the Hollywood Chamber of Commerce to give him a star in 2009.

Guinness World Records has called the 76-year-old chimp the oldest living, non-human primate. Cheeta is retired and lives in Palm Springs.

The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce’s Walk of Fame Committee chose the recipients, who were ratified by the board of directors Thursday.

Seriously? Tinkerbell got a star, instead of Cheeta? She didn’t speak, and has only starred in one film! Cheeta’s an actual being, not just a drawing. What’s next? The NBC Peacock?

9315 – Thursday

Was a bit sicker in the am, but was feeling better by midday. It seems that mornings are the most difficult now, post sleep and shower. One day until Friday!

BHK and I went out to Thursday’s for supper with Chris and Larry – took a walk on the boardwalk afterward. Nice night, only a couple of mosquitoes.

Today is Buddy’s Wake – Adam’s grandfather didn’t make it, sadly.

9299 – Saturday

Had a lovely time shopping for Alan’s b’day present wrapping after my standard morning’s shots. Got a haircut (contrary to photo, I don’t plan on gelling it into a faux-hawk regularly), Lunched at Ledo’s, but I think the stop off at *$ for a little coffee drink took gave BHK a bit of sourbelly, so we headed home, napped and listened to the gumball-sized hail fall unexpectedly from the sky. (There were also tornado warnings, but no sign of that.)

The weather eased while we waited for the in-laws to get ready for the party… we were aiming for a launch time of about 5pm, and we left circa 6:40. Fortunately, we took Chris’s eternal case of time dilation into account, so we got there only about 10 minutes late.

Alan’s party was nice – quite a diverse group of people there, drunks and non-drunks – I finally got to meet JC and Mamacita, but Mamacita didn’t bring her Chihuahua with – maybe next time. I’d say the little house had about 50 people in it at prime time – they hired a doorman, bartender, and a few waiters – but it was a truly casual and pleasant outing… not a lot of seating, but standing wasn’t bad, thanks to my epidural earlier in the week.

He didn’t open his goodies – his true b’day is Sunday… I imagine he’ll like the blooming tea.

Tina and Matt were there – looks like Matt’s losing some weight – Good for him!

I need never hear the phrase “eyes like gimlets” or variant “gimlet-eyed” again. I like the word gimlet and all, but enough is enough.

Unrelated, I could go for some tasty quiche. Had some blah pad thai at Noodles & Co. in annapolis while we sought out Alan’s Birthday prezzie. It didn’t do much for me, but the cookies and cream milkshake en route home was quite good.

BHK reminded me of the Geister game… you can play it online at BrittspielWelt ! (If you see scottobear there, come say howdy!) If I can get BHK into the online version, maybe we’ll pick up (or make a home version of) the board game… plus… BrittspielWelt has a nice collection of Carcassone w/ expansions, not just Yucata‘s Hunters and Gatherers. Just this part: (It’s all I know!)

‘Stead of kisses,
We get kicked!

It’s the hard-knock life!

Cotton blankets,
‘Steada wool!

Empty Bellies
‘Steada full!

It’s the hard-knock life!

Dick Martin died. Why does this make me feel bad or nostalgic? Laugh-in was old hat before I was born, but I loved seeing it on Nick at Nite.

Forgot to mention the awesome sub/pizza shop discovered on Saturday. Selby Sub Shoppe – found when we took a wrong turn looking for Thai food. Best mistake we could’ve made. Larry was especially happy that he didn’t have to consume anything involving curry or green beans. He got chicken wings, while BHK, Chris and I gobbled down some white pizza… with red sauce on the side.

So good. Also good was the lemon coconut cake, lemon pie, chocolate mousse pie and the lemon cookies. We seem to have an inordinate amount of lemon fondness in our desserts.

Random statement – I don’t think that Andy Kaufman was very funny, even in a meta-way. Entertainingly random, at best.

Current music – The Way I Am by Ingrid Michaelson

If you were falling, then I would catch you.
You need a light, I'd find a match.

'cause I love the way you say good morning.
And you take me the way I am.
If you are chilly, here take my sweater.
Your head is aching, I'll make it better.

'cause I love the way you call me baby.
And you take me the way I am.

I'd buy you Rogaine if you start losing all your hair.
Sew on patches to all you tear.

'cause I love you more than I could ever promise.
And you take me the way I am.
You take me the way I am.
You take me the way I am.

BHK got her first filling today – her personal tooth-care is far superior to mine.

Dreamt last night of being at the Disney lagoon – BHK and I were swimming with giant sharks, eels – no fish was smaller than half my size, most of them were between 30-40 feet long. At one point I was kidnapped, and was told that if I escaped, my entire family would be killed. I grabbed the person and immobilized him by snapping his arms and legs off like dried twigs – when I went to finish him, the police showed up and told me that his brain shouldn’t be damaged, as they needed it to ge tthe information on how he would hurt folks. I didn’t care to see him live, but I relented – though only if I could pack his head with salt and ash. That was ok with the police, who decapitated him, and put his noggin in a clear tube for analysis… the head was somehow still alive, but as long as he couldn’t speak, he couldn’t hurt us… some sort of vampire, or lich, maybe?

Adam is home from Haiti – note form MVW

[…]
I just wanted to say thank you for all of your prayers! Adam returned home safely this past Saturday evening. He did have his Dad take him to the Hospital late Saturday evening because he was not feeling well. He had something called “Acute Pharyngitis” but he is feeling much better now!
I finally was able to catch up with him at our friends home, Sven and Mary Thulin’s, last night. He promises to catch up with us soon and let us know some of the highlights of his trip.
A few things he did mention last night were:
Haiti has a 4% employment rate. 80% of the people are under the poverty line. 55% make less then a dollar/ day. He went to a town called Petit Goave for 3 days. They had no bathrooms to use, but only the Caribbean Sea for these 200 people. Adam’s team helped build a shelter out of tree branches and metal.
He was impressed with the local church they had in the center of the little town. He said “their faith is very strong and their worship is very intense.” One of the most important things I heard him say was that “As poor as they were, they were very content considering their situation”.
I guess, sometimes we just need to hear these things to remind ourselves of how blessed we really are.[…]

Gentle day yesterday, for the most part. We had a little trouble at the ol’ Subway Sammiches joint… the sandwich-maker had a lot of communication issues. Both BHK and I couldn’t get across to him or his partner what was wrong with what they made for her. I ended up getting my sandwich, but BHK went home with nothing… made a turkey sandwich here, instead. I think she came out ahead, but so much for her not having to put something together for dinner.

50 things I’ve done meme- 10 to go! I…

40.’have portrayed Santa Claus many times in my life, not just when overweight, either. It started in 7th grade, Mrs. Glenning’s Class – a organization for mothers of twins asked me if I could do the job – in 7th grade, I was already about 5’9 or 5’10. Later, I did it for the children’s reading group at the library and bookstore where I worked… finally, I have been Santa for the ‘borgs twice. So.. that’s 5 times I’ve helped Kris Kringle out by being a body double. Kids tend to dig it, and I tihnk I do a pretty good job. I can let out with the HO, HO, HO’s, and most kids think it’s cool that santa is head and shoulders taller than their mom and dad… I didn’t realize that was an issue until one little boy pointed out that I was taller than his mom, voice full of awe.

41.’ have tried to be slow, in the Hoss Cartwright manner of slow…

Slow to raise a hand in anger;
Slow to judge a man.
Slow to jump to conclusions.

I have some days that are better than others. I try though, and often succeed. Once I make it to “Succeeds as much as a sane man can” I’ll be pretty happy with that.

9183 – Tuesday, we march forth!

Recently bumped (virtually, via facebook) into Ellen from my days at the library – She and Teresa are the only remaining members of the old guard that I remember. I know what happened to Brent, but I wonder where Bill, Charlotte, Joy, Joyce, Jane and the gang are now… heck, I’d even be curious to know what Farace was up to these days.

Gary Gygax, R.I.P. – thanks for getting the ball rolling on the hobby.

My first thought is of him on Futurama…. “Greetings! It’s a (rolls 20-sided die… pause) pleasure to meet you!” and signing his EGG initials into one of the crashed vegepygmy spaceship levels from Expedition to the Barrier peaks.

Oddly enough, the Library above is where I first met most of my fellow D&D players as a community – before that, Kevin Cummins and I sort of played the blue paperback version at Unity School… (7th grade)

To counter the bad news with awesomeness, Mountain Wingsuit! Wile E. Coyote meets a Flying Squirrel outfit that seems to work. Holy Moley.

I blame BHK for the Avril Levine song going through my head. “Hey Hey, You You, I don’t like your girlfriend”. AIEEGHaba! I fear I may have to consult the big book of earworms to counter this. I forgot that she wanted to buy Pye a bunny-head hat for easter. Ol’ Pye dodged a bullet on that one, but can BHK resist the allure of kitty wigs ?

50 things I’ve done, continued from yesterday. 11-20.

11.’worked as a roofer in South Florida, in August – probably the most physically demanding job I’ve ever done, or ever will. Tar, mops, gravel, sun, drunken coworkers = some sort of Zenny Hell. I liked it for a while, and then pretty much burned out on it. Fortunately, I got an indoor, air-conditioned gig surrounded by books shortly after.

12.’Used to play in the band in jr. high and high school. Baritone / Sousaphone / Tuba were the primaries, though Alto Sax was there for a short period. I’m very slowly but surely picking up the electric bass, and look forward to getting into the stand-up bass, and going from there to a 6-string. I can read music, and should brush up on my recorder skills, too… a lot more portable than the guitar. Maybe the Ukulele will be a happy medium.

13.’Once scarred my leg as a result of swinging a trash bag in a circle while singing the theme song to the Godzilla cartoon. There was a glass bottle in the trash, and it smacked the ground, shattering as I swing it… it swooped back around and gouged a healthy gash in my shin.

14.’was wrestling with my younger brother after shooting at squirrels with bb guns, and rolled with him off of the roof our house in Boynton. I’m more ashamed of shooting at the squirrels than I am of flinging myself and him bodily into the void, only to come crashing down.

15.’has written and submitted (without an agent) 15 stories of varying lengths to assorted magazines and book companies. I fear that many are doomed to the slush pile forever…. despite this, I have been published in a few different paper-based publications thanks to my livejournal (popular science) and unknown armies 2nd edition,(for flavor text). I keep saying that I want to sit down and get back into actually writing some more, but finding that hour a day just isn’t there…. it’s much simpler to babble in a journal entry while on the bus than it is to write solid text, even if it’s just foolish fluff stuff.

16.’was once so soundly asleep that my charges couldn’t wake me up once the parents got home….I was out cold until daylight the next day. I still don’t know why they didn’t call my parents, but instead chose to have me just sleep over. If you couldn’t wake me up, I’d say call a doctor. I never sat for Abra and Tracy again. I was 13 or so.

R’s Americantina – All you can eat taco night? As the kids might say… “FAIL”. We made it there ok, but the food was greasy, poorly portioned, and generally subpar.

All items looked like food service, rather than homemade. Tortillas, and anything from the fryer were especially bad. Greasy, limp onion rings, store-bought tortillas and frozen / re-heated chicken strips. The hard taco shells were cold and greasy – salsa was a poor texture and mediocre flavor.

The diet coke was both flat and low on syrup, effectively brown soda water.

I think we’d have done better to have gone to Taco Bell, feedwise.

Design-wise, it’s a beautiful layout, nicely branded, with vibrant colors and nifty wall-hangings. It’s a shame about the place settings and worse, the food that is brought out.

We didn’t sample the bar… I’d hate to see what the bartender would do to a margarita if they can’t get a taco right.

News article about her – Hemet driver killed when car rolls over

A 27-year-old Hemet woman was killed when the car she was driving on Gilman Springs Road left the roadway and rolled over, the California Highway Patrol reported.

The crash caused massive head injuries and was ejected, said CHP spokesman Chris Blondon.

Several farmworkers discovered the wrecked 1999 Ford Taurus just before 10 a.m. Thursday in a field about 190 feet off Gilman Springs Road, just east of Bridge Street, Blondon said. It appears the accident occurred the night before, Blondon said, but the wreckage could not be seen from the roadway.

The name of the driver is being withheld until her relatives are notified.

Blondon said it appears the woman was traveling east on Gilman and lost control of the car as she tried to negotiate a curve. The vehicle smashed through a chain-link fence and rolled over. Blondon said the driver was partially ejected and sustained massive head injuries as the car rolled again. The woman was ejected from the vehicle as it continued to roll over, Blondon said.

She was not wearing a seat belt, Blondon said.

Tasty Falafel last night, despite BHK not feeling well.

Took her out tonight, glad that she’s up to it… maybe a little cheeburger cheeburger and a road time will jump start her to feeling better for the weekend!

Dropped 12 for 3 very inexpensive games – Change! , Cosmic Coasters, and The Very Clever Pipe Game. All of which should be wonderful additions to our games closet, and are pretty small and portable, should we decide to take ’em with us somewhere.

Speaking of new, portable games, Eryx wrote us and mentioned that he’s sending us a copy of EcoFluxx as a wedding present! Thanks Eryx! We need to steal him from the UK and have him visit sometime. 🙂

Also the Labs have recently produced Twin Win, an Icehouse game suitable for use while waiting in line.

Stolen Catalytic Converter from one of our accountant’s truck from our company’s parking lot.. . certainly not an isolated issue – seems to be happening all over MD and VA

Thieves are targeting fleet vehicles parked overnight in secluded parking lots. Their target? Catalytic converters.
The theft of catalytic converters is a growing crime trend happening throughout the country. For instance, on May 30, Comcast discovered seven catalytic converters stolen from work trucks parked outside its office in Gambrills, Md. This wasn’t the first time. Earlier, on July 18, the same Comcast location reported the theft of 18 catalytic converters. On May 28, Adscom reported 16 catalytic converters stolen from new Chevrolet and GMC cargo vans parked behind its building in Glen Burnie, Md.

These crimes are not restricted to just large fleets. Smaller fleets are just as vulnerable. Dreisbach Florists in Cincinnati reported to the police that catalytic converters were sawed off three of its vans. Nor is this a problem restricted to the U.S. The BBC reports an increase in catalytic converter thefts in the U.K.

Precious Metals Inside
Police first began noticing catalytic converter thefts about eight months ago. Thieves aren’t interested in the catalytic converters themselves; they’re interested in the precious metals inside, which are easily recycled. The average catalytic converter contains one to two grams of three precious metals – platinum, palladium, and rhodium. That equals about 0.07 of an ounce, meaning 14 or 15 converters are needed to equal one ounce of the metals. However, the commodity rates for these metals have skyrocketed in the past two years.

For criminals, catalytic converters are as good as gold. Actually, better. In comparison, gold prices reached $670 per ounce in June 2007. According to online commodities Web site www.kitco.com, the price of rhodium has shot up in the past five years from $900 to almost $6,000 per ounce in June. Palladium rose from about $189 per ounce two years ago to a high of $371 in June. Between June 1, 2005 and June 1, 2007, the price of platinum rose 67 percent, from $870 per ounce to $1,295.

A quick perusal of the Internet reveals that hundreds of recyclers across the country are buying catalytic converters for the precious metals. Catalytic converters need to be sent to a recycler that has the equipment to perform the chemical process necessary to extract the metals. Metal recycling companies will pay anywhere from $25 to $150 apiece for catalytic converters. A search of the Web reveals a wide range of catalytic converter buying and selling activity across the United States and overseas. There are Web sites that describe how to collect and sell catalytic converters to the right buyer. One site includes photos of the tools to use, such as electric saws, hydraulic jacks, and portable generators.

High Clearance Vehicles at Greater Risk
The catalytic converters are usually stolen from high-clearance vehicles. Most thefts occur at night. A thief can slip under a vehicle and, with a battery-operated saw and metal-cutting blade, make two quick cuts and remove the catalytic converter. Some vehicles have catalytic converters that are bolted on, which are the easiest to remove. The theft can take as little as five to 10 minutes. With some models, thieves use a reciprocal saw to cut the catalytic converter from the exhaust systems underneath the vehicle. Other models require thieves to use an acetylene torch to remove the catalytic converter. Recovering stolen catalytic converters is virtually impossible since they are not inscribed with serial numbers that can be used to identify them.

Often, catalytic converter theft is by drug addicts. Many of those arrested for stealing catalytic converters are heroin addicts. It’s a quick crime for a drug addict to get cash. There are also more sophisticated thieves who know exactly what they were doing and already have buyers lined up for the stolen catalytic converters. Many are shipped to recycling companies in Poland, Canada, China, and Latvia, where they undergo a carbochlorination process that extracts the precious metals.

Securing Vehicles After Work Hours
Fleets victimized by this crime must spend anywhere from $600 to $1,400 to install a replacement catalytic converter. The theft results in immediate downtime for the vehicle since it is illegal to drive without a catalytic converter. It is also extremely dangerous, since the hot exhaust blowing from sawed-open exhaust pipes could heat the nearby fuel tank to the point of exploding, if driven long enough.

After I went to bed last night, Amy and BHK played more than a few games of Aquarius and Carcassone – Hunters & Gatherers. From my understanding, Amy won the bulk of them, but BHK wasn’t totally skunked. Nifty – There’s an online play version of C:H&G at Yucata and a solo self-play of Aquarius on the Aquarius link prior. If anyone wants in on a turn-based game or two, look for me there, or at superdupergames for icehouse -type stuff. I’m username scottobear in both, and try to log in once a night for a move or three. BHK and AMy also turned me on to Tribal Wars , which also looks pretty cool. I’d like to start a community or something to track all the different stuff!

Tonight – Witch Trial was a good time and we played more Aquarius, but we did’nt get a chance to play Chrononauts (All I wanted was a souvenir T-rex named Emily – or a Stegosaurus of any name.)

Laugh-Out-Loud Cats #113

Oscar the cat seems to have an uncanny knack for predicting when nursing home patients are going to die, by curling up next to them during their final hours. His accuracy, observed in 25 cases, has led the staff to call family members once he has chosen someone. It usually means they have less than four hours to live.

“He doesn’t make too many mistakes. He seems to understand when patients are about to die,” said Dr. David Dosa in an interview. He describes the phenomenon in a poignant essay in Thursday’s issue of the New England Journal of Medicine.

“Many family members take some solace from it. They appreciate the companionship that the cat provides for their dying loved one,” said Dosa, a geriatrician and assistant professor of medicine at Brown University.

The 2-year-old feline was adopted as a kitten and grew up in a third-floor dementia unit at the Steere House Nursing and Rehabilitation Center. The facility treats people with Alzheimer’s, Parkinson’s disease and other illnesses.

After about six months, the staff noticed Oscar would make his own rounds, just like the doctors and nurses. He’d sniff and observe patients, then sit beside people who would wind up dying in a few hours.

Dosa said Oscar seems to take his work seriously and is generally aloof. “This is not a cat that’s friendly to people,” he said.

Oscar is better at predicting death than the people who work there, said Dr. Joan Teno of Brown University, who treats patients at the nursing home and is an expert on care for the terminally ill.

She was convinced of Oscar’s talent when he made his 13th correct call. While observing one patient, Teno said she noticed the woman wasn’t eating, was breathing with difficulty and that her legs had a bluish tinge, signs that often mean death is near.

Oscar wouldn’t stay inside the room though, so Teno thought his streak was broken. Instead, it turned out the doctor’s prediction was roughly 10 hours too early. Sure enough, during the patient’s final two hours, nurses told Teno that Oscar joined the woman at her bedside.

Doctors say most of the people who get a visit from the sweet-faced, gray-and-white cat are so ill they probably don’t know he’s there, so patients aren’t aware he’s a harbinger of death. Most families are grateful for the advanced warning, although one wanted Oscar out of the room while a family member died. When Oscar is put outside, he paces and meows his displeasure.

No one’s certain if Oscar’s behavior is scientifically significant or points to a cause. Teno wonders if the cat notices telltale scents or reads something into the behavior of the nurses who raised him. Nicholas Dodman, who directs an animal behavioral clinic at the Tufts University Cummings School of Veterinary Medicine and has read Dosa’s article, said the only way to know is to carefully document how Oscar divides his time between the living and dying.

If Oscar really is a furry grim reaper, it’s also possible his behavior could be driven by self-centered pleasures like a heated blanket placed on a dying person, Dodman said.

Nursing home staffers aren’t concerned with explaining Oscar, so long as he gives families a better chance at saying goodbye to the dying.

Oscar recently received a wall plaque publicly commending his “compassionate hospice care.”

doodle041707Yesterday, the power outage after work was a blessing. I didn’t need to hear all of the news time misery over what happened at Virginia Tech. I know the basics, and certainly don’t feel the need for any in-depth analysis just yet.

Due to the heavy winds and rain, the house was without power from about 2pm to right around 11:30pm. There is something to be said for snuggling up with BHK and the kitties in bed to watch a movie (X-men 3) on the last charge of the laptop. Speaking of last night’s power outage, my hand-powered flashlight came in handy for the first time in about a year. We have more than a few items with juice that we can use as a flashlight, as well. Amongst our light-throwing servitors there are a PSP (see doodle at right), a PDA, two cell phones, an unknown quantity of laptops, a GPS, and an Ipod.

This morning was another story. Since BHK’s folks both went to VT, plus the fact I live in DelMarVa in general has me inundated with the story. It’s nice to see the community pull together and support one another, but I’m just withdrawing from the topic as much as I can. Too much junk information out there on TV, too much noise to signal, too many people hurt for me to process this properly just yet. At work, it has been quiet, not too much mention of things non-work related. I figure that I’ll soak up more information by osmosis rather than pointless conjecture.

rec’d in my email –

How many copycats are out there thinking, “yeah, I could do that, I could be famous.” How much has this wall-to-wall coverage of The Cho Show are you guys going to air? When does the DVD come out? When is the made for TV movie?

By giving Cho his moment in the sun, postmortem, you’re just giving the next wacko more motivation to get famous. By declaring it, even on the day it happened the “Deadliest shooting in U.S. History,” or “Deadliest shooting rampage in U.S. history,” and “Deadliest mass shooting in U.S. history,” you’re setting a mark for the next crazy guy with a gun: “Can you break this record crazy people? The score to beat is 32!”

Report the news. I don’t need to know Cho Seung-Hui’s shoe size. By “glamorizing” this insane person, you’re just egging on the next guy. Report that he left a goofy manifesto and some lame videos, but don’t plaster his videos up everywhere for ratings. Don’t worry, we’ll sit through your damn commercials.

Yeah, that sums my feelings up pretty well. The first person who tries to tie Virginia Tech shooting to violent video games, movies or music is a despicable publicity whore. Anyone willing to exploit this tragedy for media face time, or use it to support their agenda to censor media content is a pathetic excuse for a human being.

Today at work, plans were pretty straightforward. Fix a printer problem with oce’. Migrate some machines for the treasury and Sheriff’s Office. Swap out UPS’s on those that are looking a little threadbare after all of our recent power spikes.

Quite a busy day today… Xmas shopping and visiting with Tina and Doug were the biggest bits. Ended the day watching Grey Gardens, which was amusing at first and then sad, and then just sort of turned into a codependent mother and daughter bickering at one another in a run-down mansion filled with cats and raccoons. I don’t think I’ll be seeing the movie about them when it’s released next year.

Oh, we also went to a comic store that will probably be a new haunt for me – green alien head. Some nice folks, and a few people that are interested in purchasing my heroclix / mage knight doubles. I picked up a few things from the heroclix dollar bin for the christmas tree… wendigo, sasquatch and some others, plus bhk and I split a booster pack of horrorclix. aside from the fact that someone nicked one of the figures and closed it back up (a dire wolf), we got some goodies in there too. A Scarecrow, zombie cop, and an exorcist priest fig that a lot of fun. No Zombie Lawyer.. but maybe I can trade for one. They do gaming there, but I’m not sure if I’m wanting to hop into that scene just yet… might be worth a drop-in visit though. They do play pirates, heroclix and such… I’d like to maybe do a Champions game sometime, just for old times sake, but I suspect the group dynamic wouldn’t cut it for me.

Also found a site for LAN parties, world of warcraft and other such stuff. I was pleasantly surprised to see a place like that… I may try to bid on building them a website.. might make some coin and meet some counterstrike teammates for when big brain is reassembled.

It’s been rather difficult to shop for the Mrs as yet, given that she and I are joined at the hip (and I like that) – it makes it tricky to buy a surprise for her. I’m going to try to hitch a ride with either Tina or Larry to do some indy shopping, otherwise, it’ll have to all be done online.

Tina was amazingly generous with the wedding present, by the way. A huge collection of light green crockery a green vacuum cleaner and a wad of dough to start us on our nuptial way.

I still have to mail Danny’s Xmas prezzie – keeping things pretty inexpensive this year, due to the no-job situation. Mostly gifting folks on BHK’s side of the family. On my end, it’s just Wilt & Momster and Danny. Everyone else is getting at best a card. (not that I usually gift a lot of folks, anyhow)

I’m way behind in reading LJ. Or really writing in it. My new life is both very hectic and domestic at the moment, and I’m loving every frickin’ minute of it. Money will be tight but manageable for the next few, while I continue to pursue a gig. Just a numbers game at this point.
