9273 – Friday!

BHK is continuing to make great gastronomic strides with her “meatball” and bean soup. The veggie meatballs got a little crumbly, but they still added excellent texture and flavor to the spicy bean brew. Had more of the salad from yesterday as well, and it was a tasty counterpoint of cold crunchy to the hot and spicy.

Watched the first half of Rataouille (hey! got the spelling in one!) over our supper, and it looks very cute thus far.

Rainy outside… tornado warnings for Calvert and Prince Georges Counties.

Lunch today will be more fajitas and salad – tasty and very healthy.

CCTV boom has failed to slash crime, say police.

Per the always aware flying_blind – “I was surprised to see not only how many Betty Boop cartoons there are in the Internet Archive, but how much other stuff the Film Chest cartoon collection contains. 66 cartoons! That’s like eight hours worth!”

The problem with bio-art is that it’s often made of living tissue — and sometimes living tissue gets out of control. That’s what happened late last week at a New York MoMA exhibit called “Design and the Elastic Mind,” where a tiny living jacket made out of stem cells had to be put to death for growing too fast and trying to burst out of its container.

The art piece was called “Victimless Leather,” and according to The Art Newspaper:

The artists, Oron Catts and Ionat Zurr, say the work which was fed nutrients by tube, expanded too quickly and clogged its own incubation system just five weeks after the show opened . . . Paola Antonelli, head of MoMA’s architecture and design department and curator of the show, says she had to make the decision to turn off the life-support system for the work, basically “killing” it.

Ms Antonelli says the jacket “started growing, growing, growing until it became too big. And [the artists] were back in Australia, so I had to make the decision to kill it. And you know what? I felt I could not make that decision. I’ve always been pro-choice and all of a sudden I’m here not sleeping at night about killing a coat…That thing was never alive before it was grown.

Went to Supper at Mama Lucias with BHK and the in-laws… food was good and it was nice to sit around the table and make small talk. BHK and I split gnocci with marinara and eggplant parm.

No ghosts seen or dealt with last night, despite Walpurgisnacht.

This intelligent, but docile creature will flee an attack if possible, but if cornered or if his home or family are threatened, will fight fiercely. His habitat is a cottage near the bay, with his mate and two cats. His hide is worth between 500 to 2000 gold pieces if sold to the right collector.

Both of us have hugs as special attacks.

She’s just bein’ Miley is stuck in my head… thanks, BHK!

I want to go with BHK to DC’s month long multi-media event, ARTOMATIC. (www.artomatic.org ). At last count, over 1000 artists are participating, and it’s totally free to attend – it looks fantastic. (Plus, Britishink will be there, doing tattoos, so we can give Cyn her b’day prezzie!)

Britishink will be be recreating a working Victorian Tattoo Parlour, complete with a display of the history of tattooing, machines, art, and tattoo related photography. If you want to be part of the art, they can accommodate you and tattoo you there. (Cyn’s portfolio is here and more stuff here – take a gander, she does keen stuff – our wedding present from her was a drawn (not inked on us) love knot that was gorgeous.)

Wikipedia has more to say about May Day than I might, this year. North Beach has a Maypole by the bay… I wonder when it’ll be danced beneath?

I think it’s neat that most maypoles are made of maple. I have no idea of the origin of the word maple, but somehow I doubt it’s due to the holiday.

Random factoid – “Mayday” is the internationally recognized voice radio signal for ships and people in serious trouble at sea. Made official in 1948, it is an anglicizing of the French m’aidez, “help me”.

9231 – Tuesday.

BHK and I aren’t watching as much TV as usual… I suspect we’re hitting an ebb tide right now. However, things may change once the new shows start rolling in again. I believe that there was a new Samantha, Who on last night, and I imagine that once Psych and Burn Notice start to roll again, we’ll be watching at least a few hours a week.

After supper last night, we came home, had some razzles and read (or did Internet research on the Tidal Basin Inlet Bridge – had to find out what was up with this sculpture/grotesque on the side.)

47.’built more than a few models as a kid. Not always well-done…. but I always did ’em to completion, even if some got the lighter treatment for “battle damage”. At my youngest, I did snap-together models of cars that could be played with right afterward – pretty rewarding… the more advanced ones like aircraft carriers and tanks always had guns and tiny airplanes that would easily fall off or break if played with too roughly…. plus, dust and dirt wrecked paint jobs.

This might be why I’m a little attracted to Warhammer or just painting minis. Models you can play with are something extra special. I still don’t know if I want to do Warhammer Fantasy or some other system… meanwhile, I may just get some paints and work on army men / mage knight leftover figures that could use a little color or customization. I’m due to make BHK and myself some updated figures, as I don’t have long hair anymore, and I never did make one of her.

Maybe it’s time for us to investigate Fimo and the like, too? Image on the right is an ancient one of Danny and me fending off a few zombies on a papercraft bridge.

Egg-dying went well… the white spots denote 4 eggs that cracked, and the ones TM took home for herself and MO. Adam took one – he’ll be giving it to a girl at school – and he certainly enjoyed the fajitas that BHK made. Larry and Chris (and mostly Adam and Tina, too) spent the bulk of the visit glued to the tube while BHK and I did the majority of coloring. My faves are the family eggs (there’s a Scotto, BHK, Pye and Newt in the mix) as well as a couple of oddballs – speckeld ones and hot pink / green… both of which are more vibrant than this photo shows. more in depth pictures later, possibly.

GP‘s got me interested in Encounter Critical. It’s by S. John Ross, an added bonus (I dig the mechanics of Risus, though I’ve never played it.)

I really want the cell phone legislation banning use of a handset while driving in Maryland to pass. The beltway is rough enough without people crimping necks and not looking at the road. Whatever happened to the idea of pulling over to talk?

I’d love to see some sort of magic technology that blocks non-emergency cell phone use in the driver’s side of a car while the wheels are moving.

Same goes for the front-seat DVD players, and audio systems that go louder than a range of safely hearing what’s going on outside of the vehicle, as far as I’m concerned. Color me a fascist, but I don’t need anyone being more distracted than they already are… If I could find a way to implement a breathalyser / urine tester for safe driving, I’d probably do that, too. And bumper-transponders that forbid tailgating based on the speed of the vehicles in question.

Heck, just use my magical wishing ring to stop all accidents – one of my characters, miniMAX first developed his size-changing abilities by trying to develop desolidity tech for vehicles… they never crash into one another!

After all those years, I still want a hyper-intelligent 4-inch tall talking ape to be my lab partner in fighting crime and solving the world’s ills… or clean, safe teleportation technology. Or a magic wishing ring that can put people in protective bubbles, and heal them when they’re hurt.

Thoughts about this is coming from the fact that I’m having trouble feeling a lot of sympathy for TM’s uncle…. he apparently tried to kill himself by driving his car into oncoming traffic. Seriously… I understand being in pain and lashing out, but there are *PEOPLE* driving and acting as passengers in the other cars! If you want to off yourself, I have no problem with that… but leave everyone else out of it.

I feel bad for TM, though – she’s been dealing with his nonsense for a long time, and right before this happened, she blew him off via the phone, and her other family did the same. I don’t know all the details, but I hope that once he’s out of the hospital he gets worthwhile treatment, and a maximum sentence for attempted suicide / attempted vehicular homicide / assault with a deadly weapon(car). I know his head is full of bad wiring, but I’m finding it very hard to forgive his behavior, no matter how sick he is. I just have to understand that he’s not in his right mind, and hope that he is removed from driving and doing anything that can hurt anyone else until he is sufficiently repaired.

50 things I’ve done meme continues with item 38. I…

38. ‘have written 9200 journal entries prior to this one, the vast majority of them posted publicly to the world. Some entries are only a line or two long, others are entire short stories, continued across a few posts, because each entry only holds a maximum of 65,535 bytes. (That’s about 16,000 4-letter words.) The journal will be 8 years old in just under two months.

39.’has owned scottobear.com since 1998… that was 10 years ago, March 12. It will need to be renewed again before March 11, 2013. I’ve got some time to scrape up the money to do so… it’s pretty dang cheap. My website’s look has changed a few times over the years, as has the content under the hood… it is quite due for a fresh coat of paint, and a revisit to the links contained inside. I started my first website with ol’ geocities in 94-ish, back when it was free, and before it was owned by yahoo. that arcane url is lost to me, maybe forever? Who knows if I can dig it up form the web sometime? either way, it was migrated to scottobear.com about 4 years later, and has remained there ever since.

From assorted sources (vchip, mgk, time) – a photo series of rival Kenyan tribes fighting for land with bows and arrows.

Look closely. This is Kenya, specifically a hill overlooking the Olmelil Valley, where Maasai warriors are clashing with members of the Kalenjin tribe on a regular basis. The tribal violence is a depressing comment on a country that only a year ago was promoted as a stable democracy in volatile West Africa. TIME has an interesting photo journal of the battles.

“We were using swords but they were not effective,” says Sylvester, 24, slashing a knife in the air. “In a day we can make between 80 and 100 [arrows],” he adds, refusing to give his last name out of fear. Community members pool money together to buy the necessary tools in secret; the arrows are then distributed within the neighborhood. Local leaders know about the arrow factories, but police forces do not.

Victims with arrows, sometimes poisoned, lodged in their heads and chests have become increasingly common“, say officials in Rift Valley hospitals.

“We cannot know the time of day when they (Kalenjins) will come. If they catch you off guard, you’re dead,” says Samuel, 25, holding a bundle of ready arrows.

Kalenjin elders train their boys how to use bows and arrows from an early age, the Kikuyu men say. But Kikuyus have had to learn quickly to fight back with the same tools. Several secret workshops employing 50 workers churn out bows and arrows for munition. “We have no other choice for now,” he says.

OK, enough of this mess – I’ve gone to the doctor – the muscle aches have mercifully abated, but it’s even harder to constrict my throat than before… head is pounding, and I’ve been laying down so much that my back was starting to really hurt. Now I’m on Amoxicillin 500mg 3x a day for a week… that should slap this bug on the butt.

9/27-11/8
BHK picked up our pottery! Her mug is amazing… I must put pictures up of how it turned out – the green and purple tones are perfect. I’m also very pleased at how well my little volcano board / icehouse stash box turned out, too! The colors got a lot more vivid, post-firing.

On the way home, spied a new neighborhood kitten – maybe 2-3 weeks old… the mama was right around the side of the house, but it took all my might (in my already weakened state) to say no to a pickup of a little black and white tuxedo before we spotted her.

Today is my Brother’s 35th birthday. We’re sending him a copy of Fluke, which I think that he’ll enjoy quite a bit. I wanted to send him some pin-up type goodies too, but that may or may not get his whole shipment confiscated.

Watched the season Premieres of My Name is Earl, Ugly Betty and The Office. Also watcher the mockumentary Werner Herzog – Incident at Loch Ness… not so great.

Also saw the Bionic Woman… I have a long-time fondness for the old one, and this new one by comparison was pretty weak.

Personal Biases against –

  • I don’t like nanobots as a plot device. Boring.
  • Too much pseudo-Matrix type combat
  • Terrible dialogue
  • inclusion of obligatory hacker-character
  • “Pleasantly goofy” factor is gone

Possible Pluses –

  • I like the “Prototype Bionic Loon” part
  • Maybe Bigfoot? Unlikely.
  • No Lee Majors Crossovers. Probably. Though I’d be for it if he wore a red track suit and a cheesy 70s moustache.

I’m pretty impressed with LJ’s new snapshot link (Third part of this entry ) – it works especially well with wikipedia links. Interesting that you can see “similar searches” … not sure where current hurricane conditions in the Atlantic have to do with hello kitty, but who can say why a person clicks somewhere? It works especially well with art/scan communities that post links for dial-up folks… just hover and peek – spares a lot of lj-cut effort.

unpacked a little bit, made sure phone at the fl place was turned off, and discovered that Neighborhood Health doesn’t want to extend COBRA benefits because of my move out of the tri-county area. I’ve got a call in to the department of labor to take care of things – even if worst comes to worst, I know of a decent health insurance provider I can turn to if COBRA doesn’t cut it… or if I get a gig before that, the new insurance should be even better than Neighborhood’s in any event.

After taking care of the top-o-de-month loose ends, we took a little trip to tina’s and visited her and the kitties for a bit. doug was upstairs day-trading on his laptop, so kitties won the day for attention. kiki and chai are adorable little beasties, and it’s a shame that doug is allergic (I am too, so my visit with ’em was kept to a minimum. we meant to pick up a photo CD, but forgot take it with us when we left.

from there, we journeyed to goodyear for the replacement tire and settlement, only to find it was a different speed rating (A “H” rather than a “S”) so we get to return tomorrow for pickup and install. odds are best that it’ll cost half price due to our low mileage and goodyear’s desire to keep customers happy… I’d have preferred a freebie replacement, but it beats dropping $160-175 for a new tire.

picked up a few holiday ornaments for our not yet picked out tree – rainbow of colored bulbs and strung beads, with a punch buggy vw and heart ornament for flavor. lots of model train sets on display in MD at assorted locations- makes me crave building models and painting minis just a smidgen (but not enough to warrant the purchase of paints or brushes… I know if I dove back into the hobby, I’d just collect a lot of clutter and dust… not to mention I might bore of it again swiftly). Better to build a model or three with bhk and bugah at his house here and there.

tasty dinner of cowboy beans, goldfish crackers… talked to Danny briefly on the phone, in fact I’m calling him back once I finish typing this up.

Found a few really nice prezzies here and there, both primaries and stocking stuffers. no details due to readers who may be receiving them.

I finally heard “Crabs for Christmas”! Very cute tune, and I’d been looking forward to the groove for about 4 months now.

Newt climbed on BHK’s shoulder… that tells me he’s accepted her quite strongly. I believe the move here has mellowed any harsh he may’ve had against her. Or maybe he knows santa’s watching.

That’s about it for now dear journal! time to call Dan back, and see what he’s up to for a few. Later tater!

Light-Emitting Shirts from Philips – very keen… I could see this as being quite entertaining, with the right applications. combine this with some sort of transponder of gps technology, and your clothes or nearby furniture/curtains could give information like arrows directing you to a certain location, or color-coded type reference tabs for people… It’d be kind of neat to have a glowing digital clock or scrolling message/logo on a t-shirt, too. Maybe link it up to wifi and rss to read updated journals each refresh? Pretty handy for cycling at night, too… complete with illuminated turn signals or goodyear blimp type ads, probably.

On the Effectiveness of Aluminum Foil Helmets: An Empirical Study

Conclusion – The helmets amplify frequency bands that coincide with those allocated to the US government between 1.2 Ghz and 1.4 Ghz. According to the FCC, These bands are supposedly reserved for ”radio location” (ie,GPS), and other communications with satellites (see, for example,[3]). The2.6 Ghz band coincides with mobile phone technology. Though not affiliated by government, these bands are at the hands of multinational corporations.

It requires no stretch of the imagination to conclude that the current helmet craze is likely to have been propagated by the Government, possibly with the involvement of the FCC. We hope this report will encourage the paranoid community to develop improved helmet designs to avoid falling prey to these shortcomings.

Walkabout was fun, but uneventful. I wore a ball cap this time, and it’s a good thing… my arms are a lot darker than when I left. I put in just under 10 miles of footwork yesterday, and slept quite well as a result.

Visited another different Thai place nearby for lunch… man, the food was awesome. Bamboo shoot salad served with lime juice, chiles, mint leaves, rice powder and cabbage. Yum woon sen – clear bean thread noodles with browned tofu, chile paste, onions, mushrooms, lemon grass and mint. Tom kah soup – a spicy coconut soy milk concoction with lemon grass, lime leaves and other spices. It was all totally vegan, too! Not one hint of critter in there.

I think that once I confirm my techs are switched over, I’ll do some more walkies as well, and hit that Dali exhibit… maybe take myself out for sushi (or as bhk likes to call it, @). [edit – whoops! the museum is closed on Sunday]

“Yeah..even now she sulks like Achilles in his tent. Achilles?…It’s the Iliad?…It’s Homer?… Read a book!”

Had a moment of feeling a bit like Handy there yesterday. People get very touchy when opinions differ…. The other side got pretty wound up to the point of hostility and hyper-defensiveness over something amazingly trivial, (a difference of opinion – I feel that Micheal Crichton is an anti-science hack writer, who ends stories with explosions rather than more satisfactory conclusions — She thought “he is awesome”.) and it really could only be settled by having a detente called. I have to make a point of just walking away at the first sign of pointlessness. I can agree to disagree, especially with someone I don’t have to see every day. I’m glad that nonsense is over now.

Information

Unhappiness in relationships, according to Dr. Gary Chapman, is often due to the fact that we speak different love languages. Sometimes we don’t understand our partner’s requirements, or even our own. We all have a “love tank” that needs to be filled in order for us to express love to others, but there are different means by which our tank can be filled, and there are different ways that we can express love to others.

Very soothing to float on my back, staring at the moon and just thinking and feeling my toes and fingertips wrinkle up a little. Water is still the closest thing to hitting a reduced gravity environment for me… quite peaceful and I could feel a lot of physical tension flow away from my back, legs and shoulders. I was shivering a bit, despite the warm water, and I don’t know what that was…maybe the body unkinking? I may make a habit of nighttime soaks more often.

Hey, look at all the batgirls!

A gazillion of ’em!

Some new designs, some just different styles on the old stuff… pretty nifty lj meme. Some amazingly amateurish, others frighteningly professional.

Take me off the shelf and put me in a plastic bag, because I’m sold!

VS and KTM both submitted resignations this week.. that’s pretty much the entire community relations department. They’ll both be gone before my birthday. I hate to sound greedy, but I really hope this won’t affect my making a long weekend out of Feb 2-5 next month. I wonder how long RR has left before he high-tails it, too?

Moment of Lyric:

My, my the clock in the sky is pounding away
There’s so much to say
A face, a voice, an overdub has no choice
And it cannot rejoice

Wanting to be, to hear and to see
Crying to the sky

But the porpoise is laughing good-bye, good-bye
good-bye, good-bye, good-bye

Clicks, clacks
Riding the backs of giraffes for laughs is alright for a while
The ego sings of castles and kings and things
That go with a life of style

Wanting to feel, to know what is real
Living is a lie

But the porpoise is waiting good-bye, good-bye
Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye
Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye
Good-bye, good-bye, good-bye

8093 – bike-about and the Hoff quiz

GeotargetUnsurprisingly, bro bailed on us getting together today, but I was still determined bike around the region, heading north this time.

I walked my bike to the gas station on 10th & federal, aired up the long-flat tires, rode east to the beach, north on a1a to palmetto park, went west to federal, and then south to 10th. a nice, scenic circuit, but I was too busy enjoying the ride in the cool weather to take many pics. 14.4 miles, total route (I doubled back a few time s to check the bike shop, and rode up Dixie to see what was new. I picked up some cool stuff at the art store which was having an insane blowout sale… one of those foot-tall wooden manikins for drawing bodies for $4, a thick pad full of 12 x 18″ newsprint paper for doodling on for $0.75, and a couple of graphite pencils for a buck. it was all 20% off those prices, too, so I got a lot of fun loot for less than what lunch would’ve cost me out. I wonder if Newt’ll mangle the wooden guy… the manikin is similar to the wooden Christmas tree ornaments that Newt loves to smack around.

Geotarget3602 calories burned if I was walking… I wonder what that translates to in cycling? Probably not nearly as much.

Here’s my route 14.4 miles, give or take.

Wings place – still hasn’t repaired the impaled sign since Wilma.

Island Water Sports – Contrary to the prior image, they wanted a giant shark head first in the roof. By the way, on the inside, there is a giant shark head coming through the ceiling, too.

I *think* that this is the Boca chamber of commerce, but I’m not sure. I really like the curvy divot on the side, slicing some of the windows.
