8504 – So, it’s midweek!

autumn

Although this summer is going swimmingly, and there are great things in my immediate future, I’m looking quite forward to autumn. There was a rainstorm on my walk home yesterday, and it was a beautiful thing. Winds whipping cool air around, taking the leaves off of the trees and spraying a collection of raindrops of varying mass and density against my face. There’s something to be said for feeling fat splashes and mist at the same time. I was possessed of an energy I haven’t felt in quite a span, and that was certainly most welcome.

I was reminded a bit of the cool period after hurricane Wilma last year. Post-storm, the cool breezes and only the lightest of rains came – a kindness in an area without power to run air conditioning. Of course, that was in October, rather than August. A time for pumpkins, rather than watermelon. Halloween and Thanksgiving are looking especially spiffy.

I prefer pumpkins. I can think of three that are especially important. A gray one, an orange one, and a freckled one.

The Man Who Knew Too Much

I had that film playing in the background last night… forgot how good the movie is. Gave me a bit of homesickness for Butters and Oneeyed, even if I’ve never been to their home. I like this remake more than his version in the 30s.

8502 – The time is counting down!

Got my tickets for my long weekend journey north. It’ll be altogether too brief, but I see quality making up for quantity.

Expedia, you stink. Boosting the price of an airline ticked by $50, and then by an additional $40 on top of that. I hereby boycott your gleeful price-gougingness.

Priceline, thank you. I found tickets (with Allison’s help) for $11 less than the pre-gouged amount on the abomination above.

If you haven’t registered to vote, and plan to do so… I think folks have about 2 weeks left to get it set up in time.

Today is the Chinese Ghost Festival!

Random Scotto factoid: My brain translates exfoliate into defoliate, and I have to go back in my mind and shake the definition a bit, whenever I hear or read about skin care.

The most tender place in my heart is for strangers
I know it’s unkind but my own blood is much too dangerous

8499 –

Gobbled up the rest of Pride & Prejudice yesterday. Well, Elizabeth certainly wins out. Darcy, (you dink) bad first impressions, but nice recovery. Netherfield is a *terrible* name for an estate.

Nice perspective on place in society. I wonder what the world will look like in another hundred or so years? What’ll be acceptable? Which stigmas will be left? Maybe I’m a super-optimist, but I can see a time (granted, likely more than a few generations down the line) where folks will not, for the most part, be judged based on genetic factors like gender or skin color. I wonder who or what the scapegoat will be; who’ll get pushed down so others can raise themselves up.

I think that monkey politics are an integral part of how humans behave. Some leader and clique-type activities will happen, territory and a need to push folks around. Who’s next on the list? Or, more likely, who’ll stay on the list, 200 years from now? Will it still be folks who are more easily singled out by shape or manner? People with more aggression or drive winning out over folks that can be more readily stomped on?

Solar-Powered Sun Bricks – These could have more than just garden walk applications.

Newton in stalker-mode
Photo taken in the dark… Newt halfway between sphinx mode and stalking a paper wad I haphazardly kicked.
Note the pointy butt, though his tail is down.

rolling a joint
on the bus Friday morning – two teenagers, maybe 14 years old or so.
The one pictured had a little yin-yang grinder for buds, and rolled joints to order.
pretty bold on a packed bus at 7:30 AM.

playing with a random macro shot. my desk at work.

A Firkin is an old English unit of volume. The name is derived from the Middle Dutch word vierdekijn, which means fourth, i.e. a fourth of a full-size barrel.

Ken Nordine has a website, where he regularly journals and does audio broadcast. Who knew? I was a huge fan of his voice work back in the 90s.

I can’t say as I’ve ever seen Frog eye/Goat eye contact lenses. Split, rounded pupils would have a fun freak-out value.

Do any toys use clip-in 9 volt batteries these days? It seems like almost everything is rechargeable, AAA or AA, with a few ancient or greedy things that run on C or D cells. I have always thought the little square batteries were more fun to look at and play with. I have a rechargable 9 volt for my TENS unit, but that’s about it… back in the 80s/90s, It seemed like all my walkie talkies and portable radios used 9Vs.

Apparently there are no A or B size batteries.

dragonball - man with a boid

Nothing is more fun on a lazy Saturday evening than watching a Cheesy Martial Arts Movie on the Spanish channel. I’ve been mildly wanting to see this for about a decade or so. Watching it dubbed in Spanish just made it the much more surreal.

dragonball - turtle man and crew

The amount of savings on my electircal bill from closing my shades rather than leaving them open was a whopping $2. I’ll continue through August, just to see if it was a fluke.

Trying to work out the best method to get to points north at the end of the month. I’d like to take Newt on the trip with me, but I can’t seem to get an answer I want about taking him with me into the passenger area, because I don’t want him in the cargo hold… he’ll stay home, before that happens. Right now, it’s looking like he’s just going to stand guard at the Grotto HQ.

Looks like Tropical Storm Chris isn’t going to bring any more than some rain on Sunday. Works for me!

Is this widespread “11:11 trend” stuff new, or am I just now seeing it all over the place? I know Urantia has a good sized following, but I can’t say as I’ve ever seen the marketing/branding side of it. It seems like another version of the 23 enigma.

I’m a pretty firm believer that the more you look for a pattern, the more often that you’ll find it.. but if seeing a number brings someone comfort, more power to ’em.

The Tostada pizza (Southwestern black beans, sharp Cheddar and Monterey Jack cheeses topped with chilled shredded lettuce, fresh tomato salsa, green onions and crispy tortilla strips with garden-herb ranch dressing) at California Pizza Kitchen is pretty dang tasty. TD, GG and I went out there briefly, and it was a good time. GG left early to go on a date, but TD and I stuck around for a bit and discussed an assortment of stuff from the Kennedy assassination, serial killers, assorted work and life history, and scamming for free meals in college. Nice to hang with coworkers and not talk about work.

meme-a-leme:

1. Leave a comment saying, “Interview me.”
2. I will respond by asking you five questions. I get to pick the questions.
3. If you like, update your LJ with the answers to the questions.
4. Include this explanation and an offer to interview someone else in the same post.
5. When others comment asking to be interviewed, ask them five questions.

Fell asleep last night reading P&P, and forgot to put on the CPAP. Woke up this morning with a swollen uvula and mildly sore throat. That tells me that I’ll have to take the CPAP with me on my trip, and sleep somewhere I can plug in. It seems that camping out overnight is still fairly out, if I wish to enjoy the next day properly. I woke up about 3 hours ago, and the soreness is abating now.

8491 -With a slack jaw, and not much to say

Watched Paperclips last night… not bad, but a little flat. Could’ve done the job in about 30 minutes, I suspect. Worth seeing, but needed a lot of edits for my attention span.

Gun-slinging females, some sporting fake beards, have conducted four stickups in Jasper County in the past 11 weeks in what investigators are calling an unusual, baffling crime spree. Continue reading 8491 -With a slack jaw, and not much to say
