8291 – And… it’s a Friday.

Devo – Live on “Fridays” Girl U Want & Gates of Steel

Hey, so it’s Friday! It’s been a long week, even with Tuesday off. I’m looking forward to getting some rest this weekend.

Made myself a new icon, testing lj’s auto resize images. looks ok. I’ll wear it for a bit.

Lost was the best one in a while last Wednesday. Some decent acting, and set pieces.

Designed a mega-trampoline for 2nd Life, and it seemed to go over well with the 3 Sirens crowd. Launch and sound works well, but you still land with a heck of a thump. version 2.5 will be a bit more gentle. Timmy Turtle’s pursuit mode is more realistic, too. (if you outrun him, and another person is closer, he’ll home in on them.)

Viruses “trained” to build tiny batteries

WASHINGTON (Reuters) – Researchers trying to make tiny machines have turned to the power of nature, engineering a virus to attract metals and then using it to build minute wires for microscopic batteries.

The resulting nanowires can be used in minuscule lithium ion battery electrodes, which in turn would be used to power very small machines, the researchers report in Friday’s issue of the journal Science.

The international team of researchers, led by a group at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology, used the M13 virus, a simple and easily manipulated virus.

“We use viruses to synthesise and assemble nanowires of cobalt oxide at room temperature,” the researchers wrote.

They modified the M13 virus’ genes so its outside layer, or coat, would bind with certain metal ions. They incubated the virus in a cobalt chloride solution so that cobalt oxide crystals mineralised uniformly along its length.

They added a bit of gold for the desired electrical effects.

Viruses cannot reproduce on their own but must be grown in cells — in this case, bacteria. They inject their genetic material and then the cells pump out copies of the virus.

The viruses formed orderly layers, the researchers reported.

The resulting nanowires worked as positive electrodes for battery electrodes, the researchers said.

They hope to build batteries that range from the size of a grain of rice up to the size of existing hearing-aid batteries.

Each virus, and thus each wire, is only 6 manometers — 6 billionths of a meter — in diameter, and 880 manometers long, the researchers said.

“We have previously used viruses to assemble semiconductor and magnetic nanowires,” the researchers wrote.

Reported abduction a false alarm (well, better that than an actual kidnapping)

A spat between a girl and her parents turned into the report of her possible abduction in which some dozen Collier County deputies and a sheriff’s helicopter crew were dispatched to look for her.

The 14-year-old, it turned out, was found by her mother and brother and taken home in her mother’s car.

According to sheriff’s reports:

The episode began at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday when someone driving along 23rd Street Southwest in Golden Gate.

The driver saw a man and a woman force the girl, who was riding a bicycle, into a Pontiac, and drive away. The bicycle was left by the side of the street.

The driver then called the sheriff’s office to report a possible abduction.

About a dozen deputies and supervisors were dispatched to investigate while a sheriff’s crew flew overhead in a helicopter trying to find the girl.

Also, more than 1,100 emergency notification calls were made by the sheriff’s office to Golden Gate residents to notify them about the possible abduction.

However, it was all for naught.

Deputies found the girl safe at home.

It appears she had a disagreement with her family and rode off on her bicycle and her brother and mother brought her home.

The driver can’t be blamed for reporting something that looked suspicious, sheriff’s spokeswoman Kristin Adams said.

Starting this paycheck, I’m slowly, but surely building up a minor stockpile for hurricane season. a wee bit at a time, in the storage closet.

My current plan –

Plenty of food (that doesn’t need to be refrigerated or heated) for Newt and me. (shoot for 2 months worth of everything)
Plenty of fresh Water to drink and bathe with.
Extra batteries for the charger for the radio, laptop, desktop and cell phone
Soap, toothpaste, two full first-aid kits
paper towels/paper plates/plastic utensils
garbage bags
hand sanitizer / wet naps
spare medicine / antihistamine
extra candles, 2 of those “shake flashlights”
lots of extra t-shirts, underwear and socks.
extra litter for newt
extra tp for me
spending cash in case of dead ATMs

more to follow as I think of it

I’m glad I’m on the third floor and fairly contained from flooding.

I took over ownership of the since Chrissy isn’t really active in lj anymore (over 2 years since her last post). I think I’ll see if I can’t get it active again.

Moment of Lyric – mp3via

Oh, yeah

There’s a red house over yonder
That’s where my baby stays
Lord, there’s a red house over yonder
Lord, that’s where my baby stays
I ain’t been home to see my baby
In ninety-nine and one half days

Wait a minute something’s wrong here
The key won’t unlock this door
Wait a minute something’s wrong
Lord, have mercy this key won’t unlock this door
Somethin’s goin’ on here
I have a bad, bad feeling
That my baby don’t live here no more
That’s alright, I still got my guitar
Look out now…

Yeah, that’s alright
I still got my guitar

Well, I might as well go back over yonder
Way back up on the hill
That’s something to do
Lord, I might as well go back over yonder
Way back yonder ‘cross the hill
‘Cause if my baby don’t love me no more
I know her sister will
