Hmm.. So far, I’ve mostly learned words for food, and baseball. I like the cookies at the China Panda, because they have a faint citrus taste to ’em.

Dinner was a splurge, because I’m under house arrest for the who weekend. I got General Tso’s Tofu (extra crispy and spicy). Yum… also, the broccoli was plentiful and super-fresh.

Talked to bro briefly last night, and he sounds a little congested. He’s taking sleep meds and stuff for depression, and I’m concerned that there will be abuse of one or both of those. He seems quite lucid at the moment.

“There is an Indian Belief that everyone is in a house of four rooms: A physical, a mental, an emotional and a spiritual. Most of us tend to live in one room most of the time, but unless we go into every room everyday, even if only to keep it aired, we are not complete.” – Rumer Godden

Moment of Lyric – The Allen Brothers – Jake Walk Blues (m4a file)

I can’t eat, I can’t talk
Been drinkin’ mean jake, Lord, now can’t walk
Ain’t got nothin’ now to lose
Cause I’m a jake walkin’ papa with the jake walk blues.

Listen here papa, can’t you see
You can’t drink jake, and get along with me
You’re a jake walkin’ papa with the jake walk blues
I’m a red hot mama that you can’t afford to lose.

Listen here daddy, while I tell you once more
If you’re gonna drink jake don’t you knock at my door
Listen here mama have to call your hand
I’m a jake walkin’ papa from jake walk land.

I’m not good lookin’ and I’m not low down
I’m a jake walkin’ papa just hangin’ around
Now I’ve made this song and it may not rhyme
But I’m a jake walkin’ papa just havin’ a good time.

My daddy was a gambler and a drunkard too
If he was living today he’d have the jake walk too
When I die you can have my hand
Gonna take a bottle of jake to the promised land.

Now I’m feelin’ kinda drunk, brother
Be a wearin’ jake socks after awhile
You know they call them iron socks
You know, I bet you don’t know one from the other,
brother, which is the other?

It’s a song from the 30’s about alcoholic nerve disorder with a kazoo backup. What’s not to love?

Jake leg – Wikipedia

Serious medical symptoms, different from the ones associated with legally manufactured alcohol, often result from drinking moonshine. Often these symptoms are immediate, sometimes they’re temporary, but sometimes they’re permanent. People go blind from drinking moonshine, or suffer nerve damage or develop sores or ulcers.

In the 1930s, though, a specific affliction struck moonshine drinkers in a number of Southern states. It is estimated that some 50,000 people were crippled with partial paralysis, mostly in their legs, as a result of drinking “jake”. In some cases the paralysis proved to be temporary, but nearly all victims were forced to walk with in high-stepping, foot-slapping style that quickly became known as the “jake walk” or the “jake leg”.

Pretty interesting, to me… I’ve read about “Jake leg” in a number of pulp stories, but it never alluded to a result of drinking… I thought it was slang for polio until I read up on it here.

Many thanks to Firpo for the basic info and tune(s)! Every bit of music I’ve gotten from you has been a pure delight. (Sheep, Sheep, Don’t You Know the Road will be coming in a future entry, to be sure.)

Funny how civilians have done so well to help, but the government has screwed up at almost every turn.

Immersive Learning is a pretty fascinating subject. I’ve long suspected that this sort of thing could work, but have never seen it documented in a friendly wiki format. I wonder how much Spanish Danny picked up from Guatemala that way?

Lj has a community just for peeved librarians. .. where was this when I worked at the BBCL and Bookstore? I still qualify as a researcher/civilian assist type, so I’ve joined it. Looks like a nifty community.

You scored as Classical Liberal. You are a classical liberal. You are skeptical about much of the historicity of the Bible, and the most important thing Jesus has done is to set us a good moral example that we are to follow. Doctrines like the trinity and the incarnation are speculative and not really important, and in the face of science and philosophy the surest way we can be certain about God is by our inner awareness of him. Discipleship is expressed by good moral behavior, but inward religious feeling is most important.

Mystery of the baby jellyfish

Shocked aquarium workers are celebrating after finding more than 150 baby jellyfish in a tank which has never been used to house the creatures.

The origins of the tiny animals remains a mystery but staff at the Sea Life Center in Birmingham believe the newcomers may have arrived in a tanker of salt water brought to the landlocked site from the Dorset coast.

High levels of specialist expertise are normally required to breed jellyfish in captivity and their survival at the city center attraction is being hailed as a “resounding success”.

Aquarist Carey Duckhouse believes a Totally Tropical feature running at the center probably aided their development.

She said: “The temperature of the water is warmer and this may have given the jellyfish a better chance of survival.”

The biggest of the babies is the size of a fingernail and too small for staff to identify, but they are all believed to be a form of Cassiopeia Andromeda or upside down jellyfish, normally found in tropical mangroves and lagoons.

They can grow up to 20 centimeters.
