6708 Settled on a new digital home, now I just need a physical one.

Mind is scattered all over the place today, and I find myself wishing I’d had more time this morning for a hearty breakfast. (not to mention something in the cupboard that resembled a hearty breakfast…. everything is pretty much dinner-oriented until I visit the grocery again.)

Yikes.. Electricity this month was $105, compared to last month’s $73. quite a leap… With the way I’ve been cranking the A/C these days, I wonder if I’ll crack $120 next month.

Well, I started the ball rolling for my new host… I went with Rydia.net/ for a few reasons.

  • They got back to me via email *fast*. That counts for a lot in my book. I want people that are responsive.
  • Downtime log seemed reasonable (especially compared to my last host, which had a multi-day crisis earlier this year.)
  • The price is right – $10 a month for all the features I want, and more bandwidth than I foresee needing, even if I stream audio and video 24/7 for newtcam. I like the idea of doing subdomains easily, too.. now I can have newtcam.scottobear.com, or whatever.

Also tempting was NearlyFreeSpeech.net. It’s $1/GB for bandwidth (actually 1¢ per 100th of a GB), and 1¢/MB/month for disk space. You simply send them a deposit (as little as $5) and when you’ve used that specific amount of bandwidth or disk space, they take out a penny. Thanks for the advice, Jordon! If I wasn’t such a data storage piggie, that would’ve gotten my vote.

Speaking of hosting, all sorts of nifty goodies at DNSstuff.com

2 Piccies from yesterday’s walk home:

Posted all around the Cathode Ray Bar (a local gay watering hole)

An Artist sitting on the corner, painting a very good likeness of the storefronts there (in acrylic). I think she must’ve been a student of BCC. I wish I’d had my good camera there, so I could see a better shot of the image she was working on, and stronger detail on the street as a whole. Ah well, next time. This was a good use of my stealth camera.

Um, so holding a beer in public is a 911 emergency? Good to know, when I’ve seen Broward cops let a crackhead go *with his crack* because they’re too damn lazy to bring him downtown, only 2 blocks from The CR. Somebody’s telling a fib, or worse, has a really skewed set of priorities.

Following up on a condo in Hollywood this week. I’m hoping that it’s worth snapping up.

That rain I was hoping for hit, and faded to vapor before I could go out and enjoy it yesterday… at least it cooled the air down a trifle. I’m going to have to look into rain gear soon, since the rainy season has started, even if it’s not too noticeable yet.

I’m getting the urge to visit the Morikami lately, gardens of so many skipped days in my senior year of high school. Maybe I’ll go on one of the Summer Walks scheduled. I certainly would enjoy attending the Bon festival.

Forget Reagan, I’m more worried about Bonzo’s tribe –

There are four chimp species, and only 8,000 of the rarest chimpanzees left in the wild. A new study presented at The Pan African Sanctuaries Alliance in Johannesburg states that in 50 years there won’t be any at all.

Chimps are hunted for their meat in Nigeria, their habitat is being reduced to 10% of its original size by assorted human encroachments.

JOHANNESBURG – Humanity’s closest relative, the chimpanzee, could be extinct in around 50 years because it is hunted for meat and threatened by deforestation and disease, researchers said on Tuesday.

Only 8,000 remain of the most vulnerable chimpanzee subspecies, the Pan troglodytes vellerosus, which is found predominantly in Nigeria, and it could be extinct in two decades, according to a new study.

The study was presented at a conference of The Pan African Sanctuaries Alliance in Johannesburg. PASA sanctuaries care for orphaned or injured great apes.

“It is believed that the illegal hunting and eating of apes — known as the bushmeat crisis — has had the greatest impact on the rate of decline, along with deforestation, human encroachment and disease,” PASA said in a statement.

‘More critical than we thought’
“The situation is much more critical than we thought,” said Norm Rosen, an anthropologist at California State University-Fullerton who coordinated the study.

The study used the rate of orphans brought by people to sanctuaries to calculate the loss of chimpanzees in the wild — and showed a dramatic increase in the number of baby chimps losing their parents.

Rosen’s study estimates that 10 chimpanzees in the wild are killed for every orphan that reaches a sanctuary and predicts that the vellerosus subspecies will become extinct in the next 17-23 years.

The other three chimpanzee subspecies face slightly better odds but, at current estimated rates of decline, all are expected to disappear in 41-53 years.

“The numbers at the sanctuaries don’t lie. You don’t get the kind of steady stream of orphaned chimpanzees we’re seeing without a devastating drop in the wild population,” said Rosen.

50 percent more orphaned chimps
Chimpanzees are found in western, central and eastern Africa.

The 19 PASA sanctuaries currently care for approximately 670 chimpanzees, a number that has risen by more than 50 percent in the last three years.

The study is the latest to sound the alarm about the fate of the great apes, which consist of chimps, gorillas, bonobos and the orangutans of Asia.

One recent UN study said less than 10 percent of the forest home of Africa’s great apes will be left relatively undisturbed by 2030 if road building, construction of mining camps and other infrastructure developments continue at current levels.

Thinking of mi Hala –

Emily Dickinson’s #478

I had no time to Hate —
Because
The Grave would hinder Me —
And Life was not so
Ample I
Could finish — Enmity —

Nor had I time to Love —
But since
Some Industry must be —
The little Toil of Love —
I thought
Be large enough for Me —
