6638 Happy Cinco De Mayo! Congratulations to the Eocene Heart Urchin!

TO celebrate, I will type whatever comes to mind, as fragmented as it is.

Checkup last night got rescheduled for 6pm… I came out with a clean bill of health, and confirmation that I’m losing weight at a decent clip for healthy reduction.

Mildly annoyed that my scheduling fails so often… being on call is great when you’re saving lives, suck rocks the other 85% of the calls. The phone is an albatross.

Thinking a lot about rings around the moon, and that makes me happy.

I suspect Porno Bob might be the next one on the cut list. I wonder if his association with CS will be a nail in his coffin?

Dancing is a pleasing thing to do.

I would like to see more Diaries like this one.

I’m flattered that at least four different people have used images that I’ve created as icons.

I like the feeling that drinking soda-pop fizz makes when I have a cold, and me ears are plugged up. the sizzle on my tonsils or whatever seems to trackback thought the sides of my head.

Orange-furred Libras are awesome, and should get snuggles whenever possible.

I like black and white cookies with strong coffee. I think I’ll have that at the Deli for lunch today.

I’ve recently started moisturizing.

The Florida Senate is listening to all those who demanded that Florida replace its official state rock. It would make Ocala limestone the new official state rock and take that designation away from agatized coral. Slow News day?

Solid Thought For Weighty Issue

The Florida Senate has tackled a weighty matter in the closing days of the legislative session. If it gets its way, Ocala Limestone will become the official state rock, calcite the official state mineral and the Eocene Heart Urchin the official state fossil. The gratuitous titles may not rock your world, but Sen. Charles Clary, R-Destin, thinks they are important.

Florida is literally built on Ocala Limestone. The porous rock is used in building projects, and rock mining is a $2 billion industry in the state. Calcite is the main ingredient of limestone, and in its rarest form takes the shape of a flower found deep within the state’s network of caves. The Eocene Heart Urchin is the fossilized remains of sea urchins, a species that thrived here 40 million years ago.

Unfortunately, the measure could generate great controversy and another round of debate among lawmakers in some future legislative session. The new state rock threatens a similar designation given to the agatized coral, the state’s official stone, which is found in Tampa and parts of northeast Florida.

It seems legislators can’t help themselves when it comes to passing out state designations.

Thanks to the Legislature, Florida already has a state bird (mockingbird), a state reptile (alligator), a state flower (orange blossom), a state gem (moonstone), a state shell (horse conch), a state tree (sabal palm), a state wildflower (coreopsis), a state dance (square), and a state song (Old Folks at Home.) There’s even a state soil, Myakka fine sand, which beat out such contenders as Palm Beach fine sand and Canaveral fine sand.

Old-timers may remember when former state Rep. Norm Ostrau, D-Plantation, tried to make Key Lime the official state pie. His bill died when the late and legendary Senate President Dempsey Barron claimed sweet potato pie, a North Florida favorite, was simply better.

More recently, state lawmakers considered dumping the mockingbird from its perch as the official state bird and replacing it with, of all things, the Florida Scrub Jay.

The legislative session officially ends today. Lawmakers may have avoided dealing with weighter issues, such as the medical malpractice crisis or establishing an effective pre-K program. But they took on the issue of the official state rock without flinching.

I still think the Florida state bird should be the brown pelican.
